Homosexuality and Christianity
As a Presbyterian Christian, I have been taught that homosexuality is wrong. I tend to agree with that. I have seen the verses in the Bible that have confirmed this in my mind. When I was in middle school and found that I liked girls I hit one of the lowest points in my life. I asked my friends about it and nearly all of them told me that I should just give in to the temptation and give the finger to my family, church, and basically what was my life. I refused to ask my parents or church about it for fear of harsh retaliation on their parts. I became really depressed and honestly thought about ending my life on multiple occasions. I did some really deep soul searching in those times and eventually came to a decision. I still have nightmares, breakdowns, and panic attacks from the things I went through, just hoping that I’ve made the right decision.Â
My point in all of this is that there was no one fighting for my family or religion. Everyone told me that it didn’t matter what my family or religion said and that I should just do whatever I wanted. As Christians we are called to follow in God’s image and do everything that we can to be like him. A lot of the people I talked to about this had no patience with my religion. It was all about making sure that I followed what I wanted to do, which was not what was best for me in the situation.
All I ask for is a little tolerance of religion. There is so much tolerance for the LGBTQ+ community in America. Why not have some for the religions that people are apart of as well.
