a dark dispute
Bataille d'ossements, 1881, Odilon Redon
jdliebgott,
The nurse continues to pat Websters wounds dry & Joe’s almost SURPRISED that no one’s come to haul him away yet. But the way the woman is looking at him is enough to make him second guess hitting the guy again—–he knows there’s going to be a repercussion somehow, but whether that’s through a HEAVY dose of sedatives, or being CONFINED from the general population was anyone’s guess.
Not like it mattered to Joe, he’d do it again if he could. Webster DESERVED the blow, he deserved one from E V E R Y guy in Easy Company, every replacement who was sent & died in his spot. He deserved it because he was a C O W A R D.
& as Webser moves closer, Joe doesn’t step back. Instead he stands straighter, taller & the SMIRK doesn’t fade, it only grows WIDER the more the other talks.
“I aim to please, Web. You know that.”
A W I N K is offered, the familiar click from his tongue following shortly after. Brows raise & he’s debating Websters offer. He wants to punch him, Web N E E D S some fucking common sense slapped into him. But he resists. For now.
"Why? Do you want me to?”
his eyes roll before liebgott finishes speaking in that sharply antagonizing tone of his. he is utterly impossible to ignore and each of his words seems to burrow its way into his brain and choke off the supply of oxygen that would allow him to respond rationally to this charge. because it would be so obvious that he should walk away with his bones and pride still slightly in tact. david isn’t street smart, but he knows how to dodge a fight from any guy on the corner who thinks intellectuals dressed in pressed trousers and the latest Wall Street Journal make good targets. and liebgott -- well, he’s just another one of those guys. except--- he just ISN’T. not when david really pays attention to the clicking of that jaw or the harsh lines in his smile. he isn’t just another guy to ignore on the street corner. & it’s m a d d e n i n g. so, so maddening.
he’d been pretending to forget this in the hospital. “yeah? alright. go right AHEAD. get a court martial.” arms cross and he’s being told by the nurse that the scene is over -- they’re FINISHED. & that he’ll need to sit down so she can get a better look at his face.
“i’m FINE, i’m fine !” he snaps in liebgott’s direction rather than the girl’s.
no one is safe from @jdliebgott !!!
( UNDER CONSTRUCTION ! )
jdliebgott,
He watches as the crimson liquid drips from the others lips, a quiet reminder of the MORTALITY of the other. & whether Joe realizes it or not, the sight of it causes his gaze to divert if only for a SECOND. He’s already seen e n o u g h of the stuff—too much for one lifetime.
& in an instant he feels S I C K. Swallowing hard, he tries to curb the nausea in the pit of his stomach & he’s not sure whether its due to the sight of Webster, what he’s just done to Webster, or if it’s simply the COCKTAIL·of painkillers he’s been forced to down every morning, noon, & night. Either way, he steps back, head shaking momentarily from the feeling.
That is, until he realizes that Webster’s eyes are still upon him. Dark hues meet with blue & it only takes a second for the usual shit-eating GRIN returns to his lips. Oh no, no matter how shitty he feels, he’s N O T·going to let Webster win. He’d rather die before he saw the day.
“Of course I did, Web. Put myself right in that Krauts line of fire just so I could come see you.”
david winces at the touch of the fabric across his now aching jaw, pausing a moment in reflection ( is he really doing this? here? now ? ) before stepping forward and away from her worried, pale hands.· RAGE has so quickly melted into something perhaps even more sinister that david cannot place. he should step quietly and carefully here, but he is too shocked ( and naive, and innocent, and stupid, and ) to care.·silently, he knows he’s perfectly content to take the BAIT. “ yeah ? well, it’s nice to see you haven’t changed . ”·
he is half venomous ( as·if david could ever be venomous ) and half relieved.“ you done ? or are you going to HIT me again ? ”
jdliebgott,
Lost his mind?·Jesus, he might as well have——even at this point, Joe wasn’t completely sure if he was in control of his reaction towards the other. He’s fueled by the RAGE from within, the anger from being d e s e r t e d by the one·guy who was supposed to have his back, supposed to be his friend. Christ, he should have just forgotten friendship all together—everyone LEFT, whether it be due to injury or worse.·
· · · · · · · · · · · · · ·War didn’t make time for friendship.·
He’s just about to wind up for another blow when someone grabs him from behind——another patient. & he F R E E Z E S, his left eye twitching from what he’s just done. Dark hues focus on the crimson liquid surrounding Webster’s mouth, the stark c o n t r a s t it gives against his pale skin & it takes him back, back to everyone he’s left BEHIND—-& everyone he’d never see again.
Shoulders lift & fall, shaking the guy from his back who’s S T I L L·trying to hold him back. A look of total DISGUST is thrown at the other & he shakes his head as he runs his now bloody fists against the fabric of his gown to clear them of the r e m n a n t s·of the fight.
“Fuck you, Web. You ain’t even worth it, you know that? You may have trained at Toccoa, but there’s no way you’re one of us—–you’ll NEVER·be one of us.”
his jaw stings white hot -- and the FLAME envelopes his cheeks and licks into his stomach, clearing him of any coherent thoughts other than the unexpected embarrassment & shame of liebgott’s words. for while it has never been a secret that david does not belong in easy ( too smart, too stupid, too quiet, too loud. . . ), he has always been spared the humiliation of having the words THROWN in his face. & while david is not prideful, this hurts more than he could have expected.
( & for reasons that he could not have foreseen and could have never understood! ) the throbbing in his jaw is forgotten and blood escapes his lips as he regains the ability to speak.
“ you came all the way to the hospital just to tell me that ? "
he straightens up, ignoring the men behind him & a nurse as she searches to begin patting the blood from his face.
Battle of Passchendaele
jdliebgott,
Sometimes it was hard to believe that Webster was one of the original Toccoa men & if Joe hadn’t personally seen him go through boot camp himself, he would have had a hard time believing you if you told him so. Looking at him now, there was N O T H I N G that even remotely resembled the guys that Joe had left behind due to his damned elbow, & it was taking everything in him not to spit in his face.
That is, until he mentioned the food.
Not a beat was skipped before Joe L U N G E D forward, fist colliding with Websters jaw in one quick motion. All the boxing lessons of his childhood came back to him, the one-to-one close combat he’d experienced with the Germans, that utter RAGE that consumed him in the time of war to ensure he did the best job possible. This was it ; Webster was the enemy & Joe was going to fucking KILL him.
Fingers claw at the collar of Websters hospital gown, gripping the fabric in any way he can as he pulls the other closer to. & he shakes him. He shakes him in an attempt to STRANGLE him before a hand reaches up to backhand the other right across the head. & he’s lost all control now. He pulls Webster closer before winding up for another blow to the younger man’s jaw.
“Where the hell have you been, huh? What the fuck have you been doing?”
by the time fist makes contact with flesh, it’s too late. although his body has been made whole again by rest & training, his combat reactions have taken a hit. he does not immediately swerve because he no longer is expecting to be killed. the FORCE knocks something more than salvia from his slack jaw, and he stumbles backwards into unsuspecting observers. temporarily, thought is blotted out by pain & anger is masked by confusion. and there is HURT, too. in places liebgott’s angry claws cannot penetrate. the men behind him are holding him steady, half to keep him standing and half out of fear of his reaction. but his palms are pressed forward towards liebgott ONLY in anticipation of another blow. he cannot fight what he does not understand. & if joe has always been the VILLAIN, he has never exactly been his villain before. usually, no one notices that he is a character at all.
& his interest is peaked. morbid curiosity almost asks liebgott to do it again. so he can be a part of something. but the moment passes --- & words fall from his bleeding mouth.
“ what the FUCK ? have you LOST your mind ? “
we know the fire awaits unbelievers, all of the sinners the same.
jdliebgott,
It HAD been a good day—-a REAL good fucking day—-until he saw the smile grow even wider across Webster’s face. & in this moment, he wanted to kill him. While the rest of Easy had been risking their lives every goddamned day, this guy had been probably doing what Joe now saw right in front of his very eyes—absolutely NOTHING. Real fucking cute, Web, real fucking cute.
Fingers clench into fists, the anger he’s feeling within only g r o w i n g as each second passes. He looks to his left, then his right. The coast was clear. So he moves in, one foot falling in front of the other, hitting the ground hard with his heels. If ever he wanted to H U R T someone, this was it & it was going to take all he had in him not to punch Webster square in the goddamned jaw.
“What do you think? I mean this is a hospital, right?”
The tone was nothing short of condescending, the words short and filled with malice. He moved closer, face filled with disgust as dark hues fixated on pools of blue. Brows raised as if waiting for an answer, but the minute Webster began to open his mouth to speak, Joe cut him off to continue his vicious attack on the other.
“I mean, I thought it was a hospital when I first got here. But apparently I was fucking wrong. This place aint nothing but a hotel…. You enjoying your stay, Web?”
david’s stories fade from the front of his mind with unpleasant abruptness, and he is left facing a man who has never fit neatly into the categories he has made to sort through the world. to sort through himself. in the STORIES, liebgott would be the bad guy. he is filled with venom and hatred that his tiny frame seems unable to contain. even now, liebgott is larger than life, enhanced by the shocked expression of the men around him, all completely silent. but in the war, civilian morality is turned upside down. bloodlust is encouraged. & murder is rewarded with stars and pins. & liebgott is GOOD at war. his rifle is an extension of his arm. his knife gleams menacingly in the light of the moon while on patrol. & david has always had his suspicions that this man has been waiting for an opportunity to turn him into the enemy. . . and he has seized his chance with vigor. “ no --- i mean, it’s fine. the food is pretty good. but my rehabilitation will be over in a few weeks. . .
--- do the nurses KNOW you’re here ? ” he can’t help but glance uneasily over liebgott’s shoulder. he wonders what stitches and bandages might be holding him together under his gown.

jdliebgott,
& sothefvckwhat ;
Jesus fucking Christ. A shot to the elbow was ALL he needed at this point in time—as if the neck injury a few months back wasn’t enough. Of course, Doc Roe received the brunt of his complaints in the beginning as Joe PLEADED with him to keep him from the aid station, to just wrap it up & let him go on his merry way. But Roe insisted it could become infected & Joe HAD to go. That was strike one. Strike two came much, much later when the doctors of the aid station decided that the injury was much too severe & that Joe had to be transported out. It was safe to say that Joe Liebgott did not go quietly & the muttered C O M P L A I N T S under his breath could be heard all the way to London.
Feet move against the wooden floor s l o w l y, the devilish GRIN spread wide across the paratroopers face as he makes his way back from the chow hall. He’s been here only a week & while he’s glad to be out of the SHIT for awhile, he can’t help but notice the lingering feeling of G U I L T resting just beneath his skin. Ah, like it matters. If he had any say in it, he’d be back on the lines before this time next week—no, he WOULD be back on the lines this time next week.
But for now, he’s enjoying it… hot chow something he’d hadn’t enjoyed in what seemed like months, a warm bed to call his own, & showers—Christ, how he missed those. & he’s just about to head back to his room when a FAMILIAR laugh echos through the hall causing the paratroopers head to turn in the direction of the noise. It then when he sees him, David-fucking-Webster in all his glory. Strike. fucking. three.
“You gotta be kidding me,” he mutters to himself as his eyes fixate on the other, features pulling tight as his jaw clenches in response, “you gotta be fucking kidding me.”
the hospital is full of stories. the surgeon’s knife strips away the layers of dirt and grime the soldiers have been using to cover up their fear & their shame and for fleeting seconds, david thinks he can see who these men truly are. or who they WERE, before the war. his glimpses into the stories are always fleeting: a glance at an old photograph, tucked away behind a pillow. . . a quiet sob from the other side of the hospital, late at night when everyone is asleep . . . but david doesn’t ask questions. he doesn’t intrude. like always, he just watches. & if his own story consists of nothing more than the fragments of everyone else’s story, he pretends not to notice. BESIDES, he has acquaintances here. he’s not sure if he could call them friends, and he certainly doesn’t think of them as brothers, but he’s found some sort of kinship amongst these common soldiers, most of whom feel no desire to make a name for themselves as a paratrooper or officer. they are draftees, for the most part. & none of them are in a rush to leave. but none of them are toccoa men, either. he’s absentmindedly listening to some crude story told by the resident womanizer in the hall next to him, laughing in the appropriate places, when a shadow of a voice calls to him. ----joe liebgott is not a snippet of a story. he is LIFE in all it’s ugly, painful, extremities. & he will not allow david to be an observer any longer. the gig is up. he stumbles to his feet. “ what? ” he manages, meekness covered by a strange grimace. “ liebgott? are you hurt? ” it’s a stupid question.
jdliebgott,
His gaze only LINGERS a few moments longer before he’s letting out a LOUD scoff off annoyance as he waves the bartender down. Another round of shots are ordered & he hopes the alcohol will somehow quell the growing impatience & annoyance that he was beginning to feel towards the other. Then again, Webster always seemed to stir up these feelings in Joe—it’s like he knew EXACTLY what buttons to push.
“You’re testing my patience, Web.”
A WARNING—it’s all he gives him as he reaches out and grabs the other shot glass from Webster & downs the liquid himself. HOW DARE he fucking talk about caring when he’d left everyone to basically rot while he enjoyed himself in the hospital? & while Joe was OVER IT entirely, the way Webster was acting now only made him want to dig up all the old shit and remind him what a piss poor soldier ( & brother ) he actually was.
The liquid clears the back of his throat & his head turns, dark orbs fixating to. His look is dark, unmoving as his tongue finds the inside of his lip, moving against as he studies every feature thoroughly before responding, voice oozing with all he SARCASM he can muster.
“Make myself sick? So you’re a medic now, too? Christ, Web, what CAN’T you do?”
david notices it. the quick burst of tension and release of skin. weakness momentarily portrayed on the skin in the form of tiny mouth movements. . . he is betraying his surface for the fire beneath. . . and for a brief moment, david can SEE him. and maybe NO ONE ELSE can see this weakness. violence is so, so weak. it is giving up in the form of some last physical exertion. it is boding farewell to all semblance of manhood and humanity in exchange for claws and teeth. no one, save the german at the end of his bayonet, knows this. but for the dead man, it is too late. & joe’s sarcasm is NOTHING since landsberg. it a weak cover. he is more convinced of this as the burning liquid illuminates his thoughts. & he can see his FEAR illuminated in his reflection on the glass in front of him. just as he can see the bodies. . . & warm liquid threatens to reappear even though it’s way too early in the night for any good excuse. ‘ get you to talk. about what happened . ’
jdliebgott,
[text]: Asshole? Me? Never. ;) [text]: Depends, really. [text]: What are you offering?
[text]: you wouldn’t ask if you didn’t already know what you wanted. [text]: so go on. [text]: asshole.
jdliebgott,
[text]: You know I really wouldn’t have taken you to be into this sort of thing… [text]: And your secret’s safe, Web… [text]: For a price.
[text]: fuck. [text]: i knew you had to have some sort of agenda. [text]: what the fuck do you want? [text]: asshole.
