Paragliding down the La Orotava valley, formed by a mega-landslide some 566 to 690 years ago (Carracedo et al. 2011) . Taking off at over 2000 m a.s.l. from Las Cañadas caldera and flying down to the beach at Puerto de la Cruz gave a unique perspective from which to view Tenerife’s Geography. To the right of the image is the westward facing slope of the landslide.
Recently, I have been exploring the wonderful, yet sometimes frustrating, world of ArcGIS and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). This amazing resource can yield outstanding results, putting GIS at the forefront of scientific and geographical research. Continuing technological advances and expanding scientific knowledge will ensure that GIS remain at the cutting edge of scientific discovery.
Reviewing some key papers at the moment... its been very useful so far. Got my work cut out for the next few days...

In contrast to the old geology and wet climate of Afur, we explored Barranco de Herques in the south east, where newer geology and a drier climate prevails. Striking differences in catchment morphology are evident. Herran Barranco appeared to follow a less sinuous course, entrenched for most of the route. The bed was littered with erosional material and features, formed by the action of water and related processes. At one meander, a large cave undercut the side of the gorge. This unexpected feature could hold valuable clues pertaining to barranco development...

The first barranco (Spanish for ravine) we visited was Barranco de Afur. Situated in the north east corner of Tenerife, Barranco de Afur has carved its way through the islands oldest geological unit, the Anaga massif, for the last 7-9 million years, forming the narrow, steep-sided valley seen above. In doing so, Geographers from the University of Southampton estimate that 1,575 million cubic cm of material has been exhumed by erosional processes.
A geology hammer was used to take samples of rock which will be analysed at a later date. The last image shows a field sketch of the valley.
