When I was trying to think of an etude to do, I thought about songs that are based on only one chord. This song is an example of blues song with one chord. He riffs and improvises around the single chord in such a way that it feels more than just one chord.

This doesn’t have much to do with my project but I think its funny. It shows how you can make music with good composition and have really stupid lyrics about drinking piss, and it still sounds pretty good. This song is making fun of classic rock.

This was a song that came up when I was researching for the speed-up/slow-down etude, and I hung onto it for some inspiration for my other work, as well. What I find particularly interesting about this song is that it must have a strong mathematical basis, but it’s not actually obvious on initial listen-throughs, as it sounds very fluid. This is the sort of song I’d be interested to pull into Audacity or similar audio program and try to analyze, to identify the (changing?) pattern underneath. It works well both as easygoing background music and (perhaps more significantly) as an intellectual puzzle. I also like the limited selection of instruments / samples -- not just for the selection, but for the limitation itself (which makes the song consistent overall).

I’m trying to score a short film at the moment, so i’m looking at other film scores and trying to get ideas. This is a score that i like alot.

For one of the songs on my project, I made a song with a similar drum and bass line. I still need to record some sort of whistling that sounds similar.

According to the all-knowing Wikipedia, Nina Simone was the first to make a jazz revision of this song (thus ”revitalizing the song’s popularity”). It’s really interesting to see how some of the later artists to experiment with the track (Hausfrau, Nurse with Wound, Rhiannon Giddens, etc.) appear to have drawn influence from this particular version; this contrasts with artists who took more of a traditional folksy route, relying a little more on earlier lyrics and melodies. What stands out to me in this version is the revision of the lyrics, particularly in the later half, sung by Emil Latimer. The song’s lyrics have gone through many alternate versions over the decades, but Nina Simone’s seems to have rewritten it the most -- keeping a lot of the same themes and melody, but adding a much more personalized and (for the time) modern approach.
Now we’re talking. This is the first album I ever heard that made extensive use of samples. 1984. Super moody.

Early digital compositions from the late 70s that sold millions of records.
The Wipers are my favorite band to ever come from Oregon. They started in the late 70s and are considered one of the first punk bands from the Pacific Northwest. The most distinct aspect of their music is Greg Sage’s guitar playing, which is why he’s a freaking guitar god. Being a mix of both punk rock’s simplicity and classic rock’s complexity, his riffs are mind-blowingly original and inspirational. His guitar playing is a good place to start if you’re a practicing beginner, you’ll find his riffs are pretty easy to learn despite being so clever. The bands energy is unparallelled, and combined with the guitars, they are one the bands I hope to sound as good as one day with my own music.
Savages are my favorite all-girl rock band without a doubt. A lot of people who have heard them will say that they sound very goth, but I have to disagree. They are a million times more energetic than any goth band, and honestly remind me of film noire (stylistically at least). Savages songs are good songs to run around in the dark to. If you’ve ever been to a forest at night during fire season, then you might know what I’m talking about. The bass player is my favorite member of the group. Her riffs are what move the songs along best. The muscle and power that strikes through every song they make is something I want to incorporate into my music as well.
The Mantles are the seminal indie band in my opinion, and are one of the main reasons I got into the genre. They sound mostly like a mix between garage rock and dream pop, and for me capture the style of growing up in Northern California/Southern Oregon. I especially love their songs that are in minor key, it’s a good dynamic when combined with their subtle country twang. That said, their style is something I want to imitate because I just connect with it so much. I grew up listening to country on the radio, but as I got older, I fell in love with rock music. Although I’m not a big fan of country now, it stills reminds me of the fun past I had with it, and songs like this are songs that keep me from forgetting about that.
Let me just say that METZ is my favorite band right now by far. And to be honest, the best way I can describe them is that they sound like what having diarrhea during an earthquake feels like. They’re just so loud that it sounds like you’re right next a bomb the second it detonates. You can hear so many influences in their music, from Nirvana to Big Black to the Butthole Surfers. They sound like an indie band but just really dark and fucked up, while also having the same energy of a giant party. I highly recommend them to anyone who’s a huge fan of punk rock or noise rock. They’ll ruin your ear drums in a good way,
These guys are such talented musicians for their age honestly. Each of their albums show the breadth of their work and how dedicated they are to music, it’s really inspiring. My favorite album is probably their first one, where each song is as loud and wild as a song from the Pixies. The vocalist has one of the most distinct voices out there (you can hear it most distinct in their last album though). In fact, a lot of their songs are distinct from other indie bands. They seem to take the genre to the next level in my opinion. I really enjoy the sheer wildness and looseness of their songs which is something I want emulate myself.
Habibi is one of those bands that is absolutely perfect at melding different genres together to create something brand new while still showing appreciation for the styles they’re trying to emulate. They sound like a mixture between 60s girl bands, garage rock, Motown, music from the Middle East, punk rock, and even lullabies. All these elements are brought together in songs with simple music structures and feelings of nostalgia for the past and being a kid. Their music brings up a lot of emotions in me, which is something I want to do with my music, and I hope to god they make another album someday.
Ex-Cult is such an influential band to me. I think it’s pretty amazing how a band can make each of their songs sound like a runaway locomotive while being impressively dancey for a rock band. In that respect you could say they’re the ultimate prom band. They have an energy and remarkable taste in melody that can only be matched with greats such as the Wipers. They sound like the next step in indie rock to me. Although they’ve since moved on from their earlier sound a little bit, their first album is still one of my favorite albums to listen to on a quick drive around town at night.
