FORM MAKING.Workshop week 1.
The last week has been extraordinarily THRILLING!!!!!! Am i so glad i found myself in this workshop. My class is the coolest in the entire lot of workshops running in college. Its called form making
The initial tasks were about exploring an empty plot that is right next to our college premises. We were split in groups of two. One of us was blind folded an the other had to help the blind folded person to walk around the plot and feel the textures to understand the land space. Further we were told to mind map the place completely with illustrations and were shown a documentary on how to create natural sculptures and land art.
On the second day we all were to present our ideas of an installation in the plot that we had explored , which was inspired by nature. Something that would blend in but also stand out of the crowd. The whole idea behind this was to develop an understanding of space, and also to understand nature and its various aspects that decorate our surroundings and make us feel at home.
My idea that i had presented was the installation of branches that would look like the fingers of a humans hand. We could dangle vines from the branches that would have tiny leaves like the shape of water drops. The entire picture will be of the hands controlling a rain shower. I wanted to portray the rain and how its scarcity is affecting us.
Anyways after a discussion of all the 40 ideas we were sorted into 5 groups on the basis of similar ideology.I am in the sidewalk intervention group that was to deal with working o the measly small sidewalk space. We brainstormed a lot and tried to combine all our different ideas into one major creation. The following note is my prototype of the installation that we will have been working on. We haven’t progressed much because all the elements in our installation are temporary and will decay very soon so the images that will be following should help you get a better idea ! ^_^
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Concept Note:
Books, the windows of our imagination. The Sidewalk Intervention plans to conceptualize the world of stories. Our book tells you tales of nature and how we must not restrict ourselves to the confines of pages but do what can be done, by going beyond them. Our book intends to visualize the five elements of nature-sky, water, air, earth & fire. We have selected a broken tile which is our central point of attention. It will represent a book. We plan to show braids made out of plants that will emerge from the two gaps and give the impression of stories coming out from the book. We will show the different elements of nature by using tiles and stems for the rain droplets which will be developed at the bottom end of the tile.On the left end of our book tile we will create a mosaic which will be made up of organic colours. The leaves which are already present on the top end of our tile already gives the impression of the element of earth. We also have plans to make the rain drops 3 dimensional by using ash for the ripple effect of rain drops on the surface. We also have a waterfall that will be falling into the gaps which will be done by using hay that will be coloured blue using natural colours. For all the elements of colour that will be used we plan to used natural resources like kumkum-red, tur,eric-yellow and blueberries/flowers-blue.
My final exhibit: Girl on the swing. <3
EXHIBITION DAY.
Well exhibition day was amazing. It was Onam so we all painted our college in white and gold sarees and lungis. It was an amazing experiece. Also our shadow sculpture was appreciated a LOT! The kind of feedbacks we recieved from our faculty members and visitors was amazing. It finally felt nice to see your hard work pay off. Amongs the many words that were used to describe today were-”marvelous”,”beautiful”,”extremely striking” and much more. With today was the end of five weeks of my first college cycle. I am so happy and proud pf the work i have learnt. The entire evolutionary process has been a good ride. New friends made, new techniques learnt and much more is to come in the next two weeks! ^_^ <3 So happy and SO EXCITED for the Workshop course! :D
“The girl on the swing”
Form and Structure.Week 4
We had interpreted that we would finish our sculpture by today but as they say "god has other plans". We had almost finished our structure and were really excited about it but maam told us to remove the leg of the structutre we had constructed. DAMN HER.She didnt tell us all this while that we were going wrong and now this.The reason she told us to pull it down was because we had cut out the shapes from the paper and had modified the shapes.We had to make a construction which would retain the original shapes of the objects that were being used to construct it. Hence we began from scratch. Luckily we still have another 5 days to finih up our sculpture so we decided to completly remodel and stick to the aesthetis of shadow sculturimg rather than working on a new idea. We spent the entre day collecting objects from around the college and placing hem in front of the light, modifying the positions and trying to acheive something of meaning.
Fianlly we found this metal frame of a table which we used as the strings of the swing. We decided to make a girl on a swing. Its a birds eye view of the swing and hence the head is bigger, body smaller and so on.We achieved the swing and the lower bottom of the dress.
We started building on the body on day two. We played around with distance and many such parameters and finished the body and also the head. Now, all that is left in our shadow sculpture is finishing. We plan to work with different kinds of lights to achieve a better image of the shadow on the wall and also the last few touches on our sculpture is left. It already looks brilliant and i am pleased with the effort my entire team put in. Just a few more edits to finally finish our final project! ^_^
Mark Making. Week 4. Graphic illustration.
“first day first person i met”
Mark Making.Week 4.
For our class today, we were given a talk about tesselations. We discussed about the different ways in which negative and positive spaces are balanced by making the entire space positive.We also discussed about the different ways in which paint can be created. The advantages and disadvantages of each paint and so on.We also had a discussion on the kinds of perspectives and leart about the cartesian co-ordinates.
We were told today to draw- our first day, the first person we met, in less than 6 frames without a dialogue. It had to be a graphical representation with a clear depiction of the understanding about perspectives.Guess whom i drew? The security guard! :P Technically speaking he is indeed the first person i met in college. it was fun drawing it out. Finally something i am capable of. Graphic illustrations. After we all had done that, i realised that MANY of them were drawing the guard only.! I felt bad but there was this weird revelation that hit me, we all think alike! It made me feel good about having chosen this field because i connect and relate to these kind of people. Anyways, moving ahead, we discussed each others stories and experiences and had another discussion on tesselations. We have to make them as homework and get them by next class. That was my mark making class today! ^_^
Far and Near. Week 4.
In the beginning of the class we were told to recall a memory that we have which is distinctly associated with water.I spoke about the first time i jumped off the second level jump board of the swimming pool.It was one of the most thrilling things i had ever done.! It was nice to recall that day because i still remember being absolutely freaked and also excited to take the plunge.Anyways,for today’s class we were sent a reading called” The Fall”. Its an extract from “ The Hungry Tide by Amitav Ghosh”. It was a really interesting story of this wildlife enthusiast who is on the lookout for the river dolphins in the river Ganga . I loved the way the story turns completely from how it starts off as a simple exploration to a tragedy that completely takes you by surprise. It is extremely gripping and the pace of the story is nice and fast.
Our class began with us discussing three major questions that were put forward to us.
* pick out 1/2 paras which give a sense of the place where the story has taken place
*pick out three sentences/phrases which depict an interesting use of language
* choose one dramatic moment from the extract
We were divided into groups of four members. We divided our work accordingly and picked out our preferences, cross analysed our choices and finalized on our answers.
After we had discussed all our answers we were told to script a small skit with dialogues based on the dramatic theme we had chosen. My groups theme was panic due to drowning. It was fun to write down this skit and enact it. We had a crazy plot where this man on the boat gets hit by a coconut and drowns.
Ma’am told us we lacked in execution and i totally agree. We could have done better but altogether it was a crazy experience.! That was today’s class. For the next class we need to research on holidays which involve canoeing.
we are completely unaware of what is going to happen. Can’t wait for next monday! x)
My shadow sculpture under progress.! :*
Form and Structure. 12th and 13th August.
This week in our form and structure class we learnt about shadow sculptures. We watched a video and then we had a brief discussion about how shadows are formed for various kinds of objects by classifying them as opaque, translucent and transparent. we did a lot of research on how light falls on objects and how shadows vary from angle of projection of light. We devoted all our time on the first day in analyzing these shadows in artificial and natural light.
We went to the park and snapped some images of shadows of gates, tree leaves and translucent objects like my bottle and clear objects like cellophane paper.We did the same drill inside college with artificial light.
After doing this we were told to plan our shadow first and then move onto collecting the items we might require for the sculpture. We decided on making a pregnant womans’ silhouette . We finalised our model and bought metal rods and scarp material since we wanted our model to be very eco-friendly.
The next day was spent on setting up our spot in college. We managed to attain the shadow of the lower half of her body and that was all the work that was done in these two days. We will resume and finish off our project by next week and then you shall see my finished sculpture.! ^_^
A sneak peek into the day. 11th August 2015. Mark Making. :D
Mark Making. 11th August. Week 3.
Our class today was centered on water colors. We learnt what kinds of paintings are done, about the choices of colours, about different art styles and much more. The first half of the day was about Wash painting. We learnt this new style of painting which i thoroughly enjoyed!! The second half of our session was about dry water colors. We did a portrait of a jug, glass and bottle that were placed in front of us. I loved doing what we did today and also we came home with no homework. was i SO GLAD.! :P
Far and Near-Travel through language. 12th August,2015.
Today’s class was about presentation. We were supposed to prepare a presentation on the previous weeks discussed topics of travel destinations for an unusual holiday. The place my group had chosen was the Amazon so our session was mostly a recall of what we had done the previous week. We finished our presentations and guess what? The best thing happened! Our facilitator left us! she gave us the day off and told us that we have some readings to do which doesn’t necessarily needs us to be present. We all came home and she graded our presentations and guess what? I scored an A+!!!! It was such a beautiful day. ^_^
The snaps of our three day process of space design in the form making classes from 5th to 7th August.
Form & Structure, 5th,6th,7th August 2015.
We had three days of an evolutionary process of understanding space design.On the first day we drew one point and two point perspectives of our various places in our college. I chose this BEAUTIFUL one point perspective image which i am SO PROUD i clicked! :P
Moving on to the second half of the day, we were told to do a field research and make a grid map of the Yelahanka new town bus depot. Through our grid maps we analysed the negative and positive spaces of the depot. Places people mostly occupied and places people usually didn’t go to. It was more of a field work that went in on the first day.
The next two days went into recreating the same bus depot in a miniature model. Here is the catch, we were supposed to install such amenities so as to make it more convenient and to minimize the negative spaces of the bus stop.
It was a really tiring and time-taking process but we somehow managed to make our model by the end of friday.! Tiring, yet a new concept learnt altogether.! ^_^
Mark Making-4th August 2015.
Well today's class was about learning toner variation. We did a shading exercise with an HB pencil and were told NOT to use our eraser even once to adjust the shades and tones as we gradually lighten! It was quite a task because I hadn’t really figured that making a simple pencil toner variation would be so time taking.
Eventually in our second half we did a pencil shading drawing of a garbage bag that was placed right in front of us.THAT was FUN. Finally something I feel capable of doing! :P I won’t say it was something new, but it was indeed something i haven’t done in a while.In all-Good day!
P.S-NO HOMEWORK! xD
