On today's instalment (and maybe the first of multiple) of "bro why the hell is your search history like that, do I need to be concerned?"
It's called being 90k words deep into a fanfic and realising I'm not even halfway done. There's so much researchhhh
(send help)
Also slowly realising I know absolutely nothing about half the topics I'm writing about
My research and story notes word document is over 20k words long and growing
How to Write When You Don't Feel Like Yourself
There are going to be days (or weeks, or months) where you sit down to write and feel... disconnected. From your voice, from your characters, from your ideas. Like the person who used to write your stories just packed up and left.
They didn't. They're just tired. Here's how to keep writing anyway:
Lower the bar (Until it's on the floor) You are not here to write something brilliant. You are here to write something. A paragraph. A sentence. A single line of dialogue. Movement matters way more than quality.
Write around the story Don't force it. If you can't write the scene, try: ⋆ A character ramble / journal entry ⋆ A conversation that won't be included in the final draft ⋆ A list of things the character would never admit out loud ⋆ A messy summary of what should happen Engage with the story from a different angle.
Borrow a voice until yours comes back No, not with AI. Read something that feels close to what you want to write, or watch a scene that captures the tone, then write immediately after. Not to copy, to reignite your instincts.
Write the emotion, not the plot. What is your character feeling in this moment? What are they afraid of? What do they want but won't say? What's being kept from them? The emotion leads, the plot catches up later.
Stop trying to "feel like a writer" first. You don't write when you feel like a writer. You feel like a writer because you write.
You are still a writer, even on the days it feels distant. Especially then.
My curse as a writer is that despite being reasonably good at English grammar, I'll never actually learn how to spell the word exxaderate. Exadderate. Exaggerate. Help
How to tell a person “hey you are responding to a narrative that you’ve made up in your head rather than what’s actually happening” without sounding like a gaslighter.
How it feels watching my mother interact with literally anyone in her life and then seeing her be surprised why she's all alone in the world lmao
Help for if you struggle with writer's block
Hello. Since I've started writing my first fanfic over 40k words recently, I've run into a wall probably at least once every 2 days and decided to compile a list of (possible) solutions I've found for this problem. I'd like to hear you guys' tips as well, if you have any, in the comments, because I do get.. very desperate.
Join a writing community irl or online / write with other people nearby to hold you accountable
Write in new or unfamiliar environments every so often, such as coffee shops, libraries or other public spaces. Or just.. a different part of your house works too, I guess
I use a website called Ellipsus (this isn't promo I swear) which has a function where you can set a timer and the site tells you exactly how many words you've written before the timer goes off. You can set one for ex. 30 mins and see if you can beat your previous record of most words written in that time (turns writing into a game and stops you overthinking the words you put on the page)
In the same vein, if you often find yourself distracted by other websites while facing a boring / difficult scene, set a 5 minute timer and say you're not allowed to click away until it runs out. I find I can usually write 100-300 words more in this time, and often by then the desire for instant dopamine isn't as strong bc I've gotten past the blockage that made me crave it
If you can't face writing a chapter right now, try writing outlines / summaries for future chapters instead so you can think ahead (it sometimes helps with motivation when you don't know where you're going or what the point is). It reminds you of what scenes you might be looking forward to 2, 6 or even 15 chapters from now
If you can't even write that (sometimes the word gods just abandon you), focus on your story from another lens and interact with it a different way. Playlists of songs that remind you of the characters / plot, make Pinterest boards about it, draw sketches of scenes and characters, ect. If you're writing fanfic, you can even use this art as promo to reach a wider audience on platforms if you post it.
Message a friend to info dump / talk about your plot, character arcs or designs / favourite scenes to get excited about them again and get positive engagement for it
Observe the successful fic writers in your fandom and let your unbridled, bitter jealousy fuel you to finish what you started so you can one day join their ranks
If a scene feels too daunting or difficult to write right now, skip it. Skip it immediately. Write a short summary of everything that needs to happen in that scene, maybe some details to get you excited later, then move on. You can go back and write all these missing scenes later on while editing, when you have a fresh perspective or different mood. Never stop writing because of difficult scenes, or you'll lose momentum
Also, NEVER edit while you're still writing. Don't go back and read what you just wrote. Never look back. You'll realise how shitty it is and lose all your motivation to finish because you think you're a terrible writer. You can deal with that stuff during your big edit (or your only edit if you post chapters as you write them). Save the mental breakdowns for later
Try summarising the plot or important details of your next scene in 200 words or less before you start writing it. I've found having a reference can make for a far less overwhelming writing process
If you must procrastinate, write a lengthy Tumblr post pretending you know what you're doing to make you feel good about yourself and trick you into believing you're being productive, when really you're just doing anything you can not to focus on what you know you should actually be doing, which is writing!! your!! story!!!
Hope this helps!
(Again, more tips are welcome in the comments)
Campbell Bain's music taste
I have a question to all the Campbell Bain nerds out there. I'm currently writing a longfic about Campbell in which I make admittedly too many references to music (I use it to add to the context of what is currently happening in his life or who he is as a person, because he projects a lot of himself onto songs), and I'm really curious what sort of music different fans imagine or headcannon him as listening to.
I'm mostly thinking about 70s to maybe sometime in the 90s (my story takes place in the 2010s so I have more opportunity to include more modern music as well). Please tell me what you think, or even what music / albums makes you think of him. I'm always desperate for new recs.
In my opinion, he listens to a lot of The Smiths (angsty boi), Billy Joel and maybe some of The Velvet Underground and David Bowie. I also might be including some Car Seat Headrest in the fic, but that's purely selfish projection on my part.
Oh and also he's a mama's boy and has a lot of trauma surrounding family stuff, so if you guys know any music that deals with the themes of a mentally ill mother or absent father let me know about that, too. Class of 2013 by Mitski is very much his themes song, but too modern for me to include in the fic sadly.
Pitch for a Broadchurch x Takin' Over The Asylum crossover fic
Ok so I started writing a fic like this in June and the first draft is currently 65k words, predicted to be ~140k when finished. It will be published on Ao3 but I really wanted a place to promote it and see if anyone would be interested in reading it.
In my perfect world I'd love for this to be even half as good and enjoyable as The Never-Ending Sky by princeloww, but one can dream!
Campbell Bain is 15-18 in this story, autistic, trans, and living in Broadchurch with his family when he loses his mother and DI Hardy ends up investigating their case.
We also get to see Campbell in St. Jude's starting from his admission (and what got him there), but instead of the radio station they have a hospital theatre production of Hamlet (David Tennant edition), AND we have an appearance by Joe Herbert, a character played by young Michael Sheen in a show called Gallowglass. There is a romance between Joe and Campbell.
Both boys are dealing with severe trauma and mental health crises, and the story is essentially about their journey through growing up, recovery and learning to make peace with who they are. Hardy also has some issues and he is a parallel to Campbell, or a mirror showing who he could become if he never got help for his issues.
I'm hoping I'll be able to start posting this starting late October - November (2026). Would anyone be interested? Pls I need feedback. Lots of love! Xxxxx.
