there is a pause between the moment he walks into the room  and the moment he  actually speaks up ; joel isn’t one to hesitate --- usually ,  but this time around he’s not too sure how to approach things. they’d been separated  and while the man is not too keen on having ellie walk around on her own like that    ,    he has to admit ( begrudgingly ) that she is more than capable to handle herself if it came down to it. still , he can’t help but worry.   he’s lost so many people in this damned world of theirs ; he doesn’t think   ,  doesn’t even want to consider whether or not he’s able  to lose ellie as well.                         ❛ you , uh , had an okay day t’day , kiddo ? ❜

his tone may or may not come over as a little awkward  ---  it’s been many , many  years since he’s actually had decent conversations with anyone other than tess & despite the time    he and ellie may have spent together so far     he’s still not fully  used to actually asking about things   ,    especially since he’s not sure if she even  wants to talk about it   ( not that he could blame ellie if she didn’t wanna talk ; he’s definitely not the talkative type either )          or if she even wants to see him today.
