Natasha Romanoff in the official teaser poster for “Black Widow”
— Anna Funder
MEMORANDUM: @shapingminds SUBJECT: have a drabble.
The click of heels echos before Natasha. Her head held high despite the turmoil in her heart. Some had to look twice, glancing over their shoulder as she passes by because the agent isn’t in her usual attire. At one point that wouldn’t have caused alarm. At one point that’s what Natasha was known for. Deep undercover. Doing what others couldn’t. Transforming herself to be the image of whatever her target wanted.
Only, this time it made her sick.
She wasn’t supposed to fall in love. Maybe if that was the only thing wrong with this particular mission then she wouldn’t be walking down this very hall let alone with the desperate ferver behind every step. Anger bubbled beneath the surface. Whether it was directed at Maria or herself was an unknown.
“ I need out. “ “ That’s not like you, agent. We don’t have our information yet. “
Stepping in to the elevator Natasha tries very hard not to think of the way Josiah’s face brightens every time he smiles. Or the way he looks when he’s around his students. She tries to pretend her heart doesn’t skip a beat every time he glanced her way. Or that the hairs on her arms don’t stand on end every time he touches her. Gently. Always so god damn gently. She’d been wrong. So fucking wrong in her initial assessment of his personality. Of course that happened from time to time. But Josiah wasn’t a cowering man afraid of his brother just waiting to buckle. This was a strong soul who’d been through more trauma than she cared to admit. And, despite everything his family had done he still wanted to protect those assholes.
“ He doesn’t have what we need, Maria. Staying in would be wasting valuable time. A look. A smirk. Then, something Hill didn’t give out too often. A look of sympathy. “ Since you’ve been gone I’m going to assume you haven’t read the briefing on the Riau Islands.” Natasha half expected Hill to continue. But, instead, her arms crossed over the chest and she leaned over her desk to rest on her elbows. Whatever expression was on her face was something she couldn’t read. Sympathy? Anger? It bothered Natasha that she couldn’t tell. “ Three resorts decimated by Chitauri tech. We don’t know if Jason’s letting potential buyers try out the merchandise or if someone’s getting a little trigger happy with a shiny new toy. Ten dead so far. Fifty more up in the air. “
Someone clears their throat. It’s then she realizes the elevator door had opened. She offers an apologetic smile, as plastic as anything she’s ever offered, and steps out. There’s a nausea in her chest she hadn’t felt since she was told about her arranged marriage to Alexei. Why is a question she’s been asking herself since she first realized she was falling in love. There’d been a lot of terrible things she’d done in the past, willing or otherwise. Many of those instances included the use of her body to get the information necessary to complete a mission. It’s never bothered before. In fact, Natasha gets a strange joy from using the framework of sexism to dismantle someone from the inside.
But this. There was no joy in this. No joy aside from the small ray of light that Josiah Crane is upon her life.
“ They’re spinning it as a gas leak. “ Maria took a deep breath and held it for a few seconds before finally pushing out of her seat. Long legs rounded the polished table she got to sit behind sometimes. Then she moves to lean against the edge of her desk. As if invading Natasha’s personal space somehow made the conversation a little less professional. And, she hated to admit, it did. “ More jackasses are going to get funny ideas about this stuff. There was too much to contain after the invasion. We have no idea how much is out there or what they’re doing with it. We need to stop Crane before he sells to the wrong person.
Plopping down in her junker of a car, Nat tossed her tiny purse into the passenger seat. The threat of tears is hot against the back of her eyes. Thousands of needles searing in to the tender socket. She’d do this. Just like she did every other mission. Her future played out before her like a movie she’d seen a thousand times before. At the end Josiah would find out about what happened and he’d hate her. Those gentle eyes will look down on her with vehement hatred and Natasha will hide her pain behind the mask of a bright, triumphant smile.
One single tear rolls down the tip of her nose, right onto the glass of her smartphone. Josiah’s face stares back at her from the contact image. Green eyes close. “ Just another day in paradise, “ she muses.
The button is pressed and she can hear the ringing before the phone reaches her ear. “ Hi, baby, “ Natasha says in Natalie’s usual tone. Whatever reserve she had was shut off when her alter ego turned back on. “ I just landed a small modeling gig. Want to celebrate with me? There’s that cute little Italian place around the corner I’ve been wanting to try. Maybe we could go? “
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
FILE: shapingminds-a aka josiah
THE REMAINDER OF THE INTERROGATION WAS JUST … awful. josiah hated every second of being in that room because he wasn’t the kind of person who ever ENDED UP in those rooms. he wasn’t a trouble maker. he wasn’t a bad guy. top it off with the fact that they were trying to make him reveal information about his BROTHER? it was stressful. they made him LIE. he couldn’t rat jason out, that was his blood. and it was someone who — the moment he found out josiah was even interrogated — was probably going to end up extremely upset. regardless of the fact that he wasn’t budging.
he was honestly getting to the point where he was sure he’d never get out of there. he was tired, hungry, his head hurt, and he just wanted to go HOME. he had just laid his head down against the table, on the verge of a complete MENTAL BREAK when suddenly one of the agents came in and finally told him he could leave. thank god. josiah had never left a place so quickly in his life.
he pulled up to his apartment building and it finally felt like he could BREATHE again. he knew what he needed to do. go inside, put on a pot of coffee, and unfortunately he needed to call jason and INFORM him of the questioning before the other managed to find out without it coming directly from him. that was the SAFEST bet. but just as he was getting ready to push his door open, a bag on the ground outside of the next door apartment caught his eyes. did someone finally move in?
he shifted his gaze back to his own apartment, considering going inside and handling his business but … he just couldn’t do that. whoever was in there had left their food outside and just ignoring it would be WRONG. so he closed his own door again before moving over to pick the bag up, and then his knuckles came up to rap against the slightly ajar door. ❛ hello? excuse me, i live next door .. i think you left your food outside! is anyone home? ❜
Waiting for Josiah to show up reminded Natasha just how numb she’d become to a lot of the world. Instead of getting nervous for the part she needed to play, a calm washed over her. Almost as if she shoved her old self outside of her body and allowed the Natalie persona to soak back in. Several agents had helped her bring in a few boxes and she took the time to start unpacking one like she imagined Natalie would. Head tilted, eyes closed, Natasha created an organized chaos that was meant to mimic someone overwhelmed and alone. Half emptied boxes. Bubble wrap draped over the arm of the couch. Her other heel was left just inside to make the one propping open the door a little less conspicuous.
A bluetooth speaker was hooked up to ‘ Natalie’s ‘ phone to play an array of pop music to help the model get through the agony of unpacking. She wondered just how frazzled the likes of Josiah would be by the time he made it to her door. “ Gonna tell big brother, aren’t you? “ She said to the back of a picture frame. Beneath the layer of glass was an image of herself. Part of the shoot she’d done in Tokyo. “ To stop him from finding out from the wrong people. “
What a good brother.
‘ Hello ? ‘
Natasha turns on her heel. “ Show time, “ she whispers to herself. On her way to the front door she grabs a mostly empty glass of red wine. Energy builds with each step toward the familiar voice. Although, it’s a little less familiar now that the stress wasn’t so high. Eyes go wide once the door opens wide. “ Oh shit! “ A chuckle before she takes a small sip from the glass. “ I’ve been so busy I forgot I bought dinner. “ Natasha gently smacks the center of her forehead with the flat of her palm. Her smile stretches wide and her eyes take their time soaking in the sight standing before her. “ Time flies when you’re having fun. Right? “ Reaching out, she makes sure one finger gently brushes against Josiah’s hand when she moves to take the bag. “ I’m Natalie. Would you like to join me for some of this? My eyes were a lot bigger than my stomach when I was reading the chinese menu. “ // @shapingminds

FILE - RELATIONSHIPS
Natasha’s never been in a real relationship. Over the years she’s been in a number of fake ones or, in the case of Alexei, ones with mutual benefits. But, never one where she’s truly been attached or in love with the other party.
During her tenure in the Red Room, Natalia fell in love with another student named Tyanna Nikolaev. They’d sneak into the garden when everyone else was asleep, lay in the grass, and look at the stars. Tyanna would talk about escape sometimes. Other times she’d muse about the life she might’ve had under different circumstances. Natalia, as much as she wanted to, never chimed in on these particular occasions. She’d just smile and kiss Tyanna on the cheek, refusing to crush the dreams of the one she loved.
While Natalia excelled in the program, Tyanna more or less stayed the same. Not for lack of talent. She wanted freedom. it was all too late that Natalia realized that the other was actively trying to fail out of the program.
One day, her girlfriend got her wish. Madam B chose Tyanna and another student to spar against one another. Natalia had to watch, expressionless, as her lover took her last breath. There were no tears. She couldn’t cry. In fact, seeing the look of peace on the other’s face made it hard to. Tyanna was free.
After graduating her work in espionage left little room for finding someone to love. She had a string of sexual relations for both work and pleasure but never any emotional attachment. The strongest thing she’d ever felt is the love she has for Clint. Behind that is the love she feels for the rest of her family. Even that’s on a different scale. There’s a fear in letting someone in that close. Partially because of habit and partially due to the way Natasha sees herself after everything she’s done.
The things she’s willing to do to get the job done or to protect her family.
She will gladly step into sexual encounters. She will even hold on to a ‘ friend with benefits ‘ for a short period of time. As much as she wants to love and to be loved Natasha is also afraid of all the things that come with such an attachment. Keeping people at arm’s length is easier. Staying behind the wall she’s built over the years is so much easier. If she ever does allow herself to act on any emotional attachment she’d do whatever it takes to protect that other person. Natasha is fiercely loyal to those she cares about even if she may not act like it.

MEMORANDUM: @shapingminds SUBJECT: plotted starter? kind of?
The Josiah of the real world was nothing like the Josiah Natasha anticipated he would be given their first meeting. Well, not his first meeting. A sheet of glass had separated them. All she’d seen was a sobbing, anxious mess who wanted to go home to his mommy. It was immediately obvious they wouldn’t get something out of such a stressful scenario.
Which brought her here.
Since then, Nastasha ( currently known as Natalie ) learned there was so much more beneath the surface. Josiah was a gentle soul who was fiercely loyal to an asshole who didn’t deserve it. If the bastard weren’t wanted for selling black market Chitauri tech then she’d go search him down herself. Just to say hi. Or something like that.
At some point during the movie, one of Natasha’s legs draped over the other man’s lap. She was comfortable. So comfortable that she needed to remind herself about her purpose here. Leaning over allows her to press a kiss to the corner of Josiah’s mouth. Her heart flutters, skipping several beats in anticipation of whether or not the man would turn his head to bless her with something more substantial. “ I don’t have work tomorrow, “ whispered words leave hope hanging in the air. Biting on her bottom lip, Natasha waits a few seconds before continuing. “ Want something else to drink? I could put on another movie. “
FILE: cxptsmarvel aka carol
“I know,” Carol sighs, stepping forward to pull Natasha in for a brief hug. “It’s been crazy out there.”
And it’s true. The chaos caused by the snap wasn’t just confined to C-53, and Carol had herself stretched pretty thin. But, if there was anyone who could understand the weight of that responsibility, it was Natasha. Back on earth, nearly all of the original Avengers have given up and moved on to other things. All except for the Black Widow. Her persistence and determination was the driving force of the team, and her work at the tower was invaluable.
“I was passing by,” She explains with a nod. “But I know it’s been a while since I actually stopped by and touched base with you.” The exhaustion is evident on Natasha’s features, but Carol doesn’t mention it. Everyone is tired these days, including herself. It does make her question her actions, though. Perhaps she really should dedicate more time to helping Earth. “And not just on all this hero stuff,” She adds. “Things sounded.. A bit hectic on that last call. I wanted to see how you were doing.”
One by one her friends left the compound. Her family was disintegrating all over again. First the Snap and now this. But, Natasha kept holding on. She called Rhodey every day for a status update on Clint. Any other contacts that were still alive were called in kind. After all they’d been through she wanted to be there for one of her closest friends. Instead of asking for help he was going on an alleged rampage.
Muscles squeeze just a little tighter before stepping back and out of the hug. One lonely tear rolls down Natasha’s cheek but she refuses to acknowledge it. The damn things keep falling out of her eye since the world started falling apart. Instead, she crosses her arms over her chest once there’s enough space to do so. The tip of her tongue snakes out. Natasha licks her lip once the tear hits the corner of her mouth. A tired smile is plastered along her expression, more to tell herself she’s okay than to put on a mask for Carol.
“ Managed to get some sleep last night. Things are looking up. “ She chuckled and the action was genuine. Her tired smile evolved into something real. Hopeful. “ The UN’s made a lot of progress this week. That’ll help. Talked to Thor on X-Box, which was different. And odd. “ Another chuckle, even louder than the last. “ How are you? “
