The street lights outside slowly turned on, one by one, leaving a dim spotlight on the sidewalk for Lia as she made her way to her store. The moon, which finally kissed the horizon sent rays of ghostly white light amongst the rest of the city, leaving shadows to ooze their way onto the sidewalk like pitch black ink. And as they always had, spirits formed into misty, white, glowing forms in front of her. It was like watching a tree grow, but way faster, as the spirits formed from the shadows which had been recently casted onto the pavement.Â
In her recent studies, Lia had learned that spirits had preferred the night over the day. Each spirit had a different reason for this, but there had been 3 more popular reasons. The first had been because it was cooler, the suns rays weren't beating through their transparent bodies, warming them up and causing them anger. The second reason had been because the moonlight had given them more power, and could make them believe for just a while that they were alive again. And the third reason had been because they were easier to see, which meant Lia could make easier contact with them, so she could decode their faces and learn their names, and hopefully convince her to visit their families. Over the months, however, Lia had become tired with the constant visits to families. As much as she had felt obligated to inform innocent, tired, and possibly mourning families of their loved ones messages, she had become woozy of the constant travel and inevitable tears.Â
If families really were interested in speaking with their loved ones, then they would come to me. Or another medium. She thought. If it's an important message, then it will be done. Otherwise I am finished with the constant travel.Â
Lia crossed the road towards her store. The air around her had cooled drastically since she had begun walking only 10 minutes ago, and it had turned the breath which she exhaled into small white clouds. As she approached the tall glass doors of her store, she shoved her hand into her jacket pockets, searching around with her fingers for her store keys. She moved her hands to her pant pockets, searching for the cold metal a little more desperately. She could feel the spirits approaching from behind her, their requests more demanding than usual.
Please I NEED you to speak with my family I cannot wait muc-
Listen here you stuck up little-
I AM DESPERATE. My father MUST know it isn't his fault! PLEASE MY ADRESS IS-
Lia yanked her hands out of her pockets and covered her ears as the voices got louder. They had become more angry, and she could feel them swarm around her, grasping at her arms, trying to pull her hands away. Their hands left freezing marks on her skin, sending goosebumps all around her body, and making her colder. The moonlight had definitely made a difference on them as they had become stronger than they had been during the day, and an angry mob of them had become very difficult to fight off.Â
"STOP!" She wailed as she flung her body around, hoping to shake off their grips. Her hands were still covering her ears, and her eyes were now tightly closed. "LET GO OF ME!"Â
