NASA’s Webb Traces Details of Complex Planetary Nebula by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope

A planetary nebula is made up of gas and dust ejected from a star, like our Sun, late in its life. They’re typically circular, elliptical, or bi-polar, but some stray from the norm! Webb’s newest look at NGC 6072 reveals an unusual, asymmetrical scene, potentially caused by a binary star system (two stars orbiting one another)!

This space butterfly lives about 525 light-years away within the Taurus star-forming region and is all about growth. It’s a protostar (a young star still gathering mass from its environment) surrounded by a planet-forming disc that’s 65 billion kilometers across. That’s several times the diameter of our Solar System. We call it IRAS 04302+224. This image combines observations from Webb’s NIRCam and MIRI instruments as well as optical data from NASA Hubble.

Webb caught this view of enormous jets of seething gases erupting from a monster star, resembling a cosmic double-bladed lightsaber.

The jets are moving at hundreds of thousands of miles per hour, stretching across 8 light-years of space, approximately twice the distance between our Sun and the next-nearest stars in the Alpha Centauri system. The star at the center of this is just a baby - a baby 10 times more massive than our Sun! Newly forming stars can build up infalling gas, which is then blasted out along the star’s spin axis, likely due to the influence of its magnetic fields. We’ve observed this phenomenon before in lower mass stars, but spotting a star and jet of this scale is rare.

Webb took a look at Sagittarius B2 molecular cloud, the most massive, and active star-forming region in our galaxy, located only a few hundred light years from our central supermassive black hole. Astronomers want to figure out why it is so much more active than the rest of the galactic center. While Sgr B2 has only 10% of the galactic center’s gas, it produces 50% of its stars.

Webb First to Show 4 Dust Shells 'Spiraling' Apep, Limits Long Orbit by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope

Webb refined our view of a star system called Apep, named after the Egyptian god of chaos. Apep was thought to consist solely of two Wolf-Rayet stars, which are a rare class of massive, evolved, luminous stars. Only 1000 are estimated to exist in our galaxy, out of hundreds of billions. To have found a system with two of them is exceedingly rare, and it’s the only known one in our galaxy.

A planetary nebula like this one is what is created when ordinary stars like our Sun reaches the end of its life. After ballooning into cool red giant stars, they shed their outer layers and cast them into space, exposing their white-hot cores. Ultraviolet light from the central star ionizes the cast-off material, causing it to glow. The planetary nebula phase of a star’s life is as fleeting as it is beautiful, lasting only a few tens of thousands of years.

Planetary Nebula NGC 2899 (35th Anniversary Image) by NASA Hubble Space Telescope

This Hubble Space Telescope image captures the beauty of the moth-like planetary nebula NGC 2899. This object has a diagonal, bipolar, cylindrical outflow of gas. This is propelled by radiation and stellar winds from a nearly 40,000-degree-Fahrenheit white dwarf at the center. In fact, there may be two companion stars that are interacting and sculpting the nebula, which is pinched in the middle by a fragmented ring or torus – looking like a half-eaten donut. It has a forest of gaseous “pillars” that point back to the source of radiation and stellar winds. The colors are from glowing hydrogen and oxygen. The nebula lies approximately 4,500 light-years away in the southern constellation Vela.

This is a Hubble Space Telescope photo of a small portion of the Rosette Nebula, a huge star-forming region spanning 100 light-years across and located 5,200 light-years away. Hubble zooms into a small portion of the nebula that is only 4 light-years across (the approximate distance between our Sun and the neighboring Alpha Centauri star system.) Dark clouds of hydrogen gas laced with dust are silhouetted across the image. The clouds are being eroded and shaped by the seething radiation from the cluster of larger stars in the center of the nebula (NGC 2440). An embedded star seen at the tip of a dark cloud in the upper right portion of the image is launching jets of plasma that are crashing into the cold cloud around it. The resulting shock wave is causing a red glow. The colors come from the presence of hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen.
