I really love that Dex is probably the type of guy who has a major staring problem.
With other people it's weird. Intense, borderline beady eyes that are boring into whatever subject happens to be in his line of sight. His expression is always a little pissed off, thick eyebrows furrowed in concentration as his mouth is pulled into a thin line. What's going on inside that head? We'll never know, but it doesn't seem like anything innocent.
But when it comes to you he really can't help it. Anything you do enraptures him, draining his focus so all he sees is you, you, you. He loves looking at your fingers when you're doing something that requires precision, you have such a delicate touch that even the simple things like tearing parchment you're going to use for a baking project or tapping in the password to your phone looks pretty.
He catches himself staring when your brows are slightly furrowed as you read him the next chapter of the book you selected for the week and the way your lips move have him forgetting the words coming out of them. All he can think about is the way your bottom lip looks soft and the delicate curve of your cupids bow.
When you catch him in his trance you always smile, never unnerved by his habit even though he stares at you the way he stares at anyone else; brows drawn, face hardened, his jaw clenched making those nice lines that frame the side of his chin stand out. It's endearing that after all this time he still finds you endlessly fascinating and all the attention never fails to make you blush.

“Goodness, have you ever paid attention to the way the sunlight touches the flowers on this side?”
She didn’t. But she paid attention to how it touched her.
With Ending’s back to her, the very edges of her form were illuminated in a warm glow—like a halo of sorts.
To John, she was the very sun itself.
She strode over, armor clanging and creaking as she did so, and peeked over Ending’s shoulder.
“They’re lovely,” she replied in a hushed, intimate tone.
A gauntlet rose with gentle precision to tuck one of Ending’s flyaway hairs behind her ear.
“But I know of something much lovelier.”
At first, her cheeks darkened and she ducked her head a little. She wasn’t used to such praises yet, nor such loving, intimate gestures. They made her want to retreat into herself, to hide the vulnerable parts of her that were on display.
Instead, she turned to face her loyal knight. With the sun illuminating her eyes, Ending swore that they were the exact same color as the forget-me-nots near her feet.
“Is it your goal to make me fall deeper in love with you?”
John’s wide, playful smile formed on her face, causing her princess’s heart to skip a beat in kind.
“That’s always my goal, dearest.”
Ending’s blush grew deeper and she smiled, more to herself than anyone else. Her hand found hers without looking, as naturally as breathing, and their fingers intertwined.
“Would you like to visit our secret spot?”
That same playful smile remained, and John looked at her with a fondness reserved for no one else.
“As you wish, my liege.”
Their secret spot within the gardens was something of an art piece in and of itself. In the center sat an old fountain, parched of water, cracked, and covered in moss. Ending absolutely adored the angel sculpture in the center, and made it a point to touch its wings each time they returned.
The main appeal wasn’t the old fountain. It wasn’t even the array of flowers that lined the hedges around them. It was the fact that said hedges were high enough to block the view completely, and that the area was largely ignored.
They could simply be.
Here in the secluded section of the garden, they weren’t Princess Ending and Sir John. They were simply themselves, so deeply in love that the small risk of being caught didn’t even matter.
She shifted to get more comfortable on her lap, and John used her hands to assist. Once she was settled back in place, she resumed working on the chain of forget-me-nots in her hand. A small pile of them rested on her lap, waiting for their chance to be braided in, and she was tempted to idly toy with the stems while they conversed.
Her hand wandered instead: it played with the long bits of Ending’s hair, re-tied a bow that had become loose, and eventually found its home at her side.
“I wish we could do this every day,” she sighed sadly. “I love coming here with you.”
John chuckled. “I’m with you no matter the hour, dearest. Save for when I have to rest.”
That thought alone made her smile. She really was. And even if they couldn’t act on it in public, they’d definitely snuck kisses and hand squeezes behind curtains and closed doors.
“But this is different. This is…”
…What it should be like.
The thought made a pang echo in her chest, and John took notice immediately. She cupped her princess’s cheek, bringing her gaze back to meet hers.
“Hey, hey. We’re here together now. Let’s live in the moment, huh?”
As much as she wanted to agree, Ending couldn’t. It was all so unfair. It was like there was an invisible wall separating them when they weren’t alone together.
“I’m going to find a way. I promise. I don’t want anyone else.”
John’s gaze turned serious. “I know you think I’m wonderful, but…” She paused, pursing her lips before continuing. “Don’t ruin your future prospects on my account.
She didn’t respond verbally at first. She had attached the last forget-me-not to the chain, and returned it to her lap for a brief moment. Her hands found their way to John’s gauntlet instead, where she removed it with the utmost care and reverence.
The flower chain was lifted up, and Ending wrapped it around her wrist, then secured it to form a bracelet. Her knight’s gaze dropped to it right away, a sentimental smile forming on her face.
She’d wear it until the flowers wilted and fell apart.
“John…”
She lifted her gaze and now it was Ending’s turn to cup her cheeks, a playful smile reflecting on her face.
