Whatever Marc did (and however Vale reacted in the end), the admiration and respect was absolutely there from both sides.
Somewhere along the way, Marc got frustrated with his bike, his riding, his crashes, and the easiest person to blame was Rossi, unfortunately. He got involved in something he shouldn’t have, and Valentino got fed up after a while. So Marc fucked up. Everyone does, at some point. It just so happens that his fuck-up had very big consequences. And unfortunately he had no-one to protect him (though credit to Rossi, he did try).
Marc (and Vale) can go on and on about “losing respect”, and “never being an idol” as much as they want. If they didn’t give a fuck about each other to begin with, this shitstorm would never have reached such epic proportions.
Marc had a tough time this season, and I suspect it’ll get worse before it gets better. Fingers crossed he’ll learn his lessons now, rather than when it’s too late. He made severe mistakes, but - as you can probably tell - I’m not ready to write him off completely based on this year just yet.
The happy, chatty kid who just wants to fight is still in there somewhere, I hope. And this is just a temporary blip. Hopefully some day soon he’ll come out and play again.
Until then, here’s an absolutely brief (because I’m great at that, as we all know) reminder of the good times, in the hopes that it’ll help a tiny bit.
