Winter Solstice | December 21, 2021
Blessed almost Winter Solstice, witches!
❄︎ ❄︎ ❄︎ ❄︎ ❄︎
Although the days grow colder and the sun dwindles quickly, we are quickly approaching the return of the Sun. In less than a week we will reach the peak of darkness and usher in the return of the light.
As the long nights are coming to a close, what thoughts are being stirred up as we bundle up in preparation for the cold? Is it time to put something to rest as the shortage of light comes to a close?
Winter tends to feel like the darkest times. The bitter cold bites at our skin, colors are gray and dreary, and we end up spending most of our time indoors. But picture a snowy mountain on a sunny day. The reflection of the Sun on the snow makes the whole surrounding area ignite with brightness. This soft, white sheet over the Earth bounces light every which way, making the whole world seem alive. So while the days may seem drab and dull, quiet and cold, and lacking the colors of spring, think of the falling of the snow as the sprinkling of new light across the land as the days grow longer and darkness is left behind.

Check out this great recipe for Sun Sugar Cookies to honor the return of the Sun!
INGREDIENTS 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp kosher salt 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature 3/4 cup sugar 2 tablespoons finely grated lemon zest 1 tsp clear vanilla extract 4 large egg yolks
ICING INGREDIENTS 1 1/4 cups powdered sugar 2 tablespoons (or more) fresh lemon juice
Sanding sugar (optional) Star or snow sprinkles (optional)
DIRECTIONS Whisk together flour and salt in a medium sized bowl.
Whip butter in an electric mixer on medium speed, gradually add in sugar and beat until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
Beat in lemon zest and vanilla. Add egg yolks and just mix until blended. Turn mixer to low and gradually blend in flour mixture.
Divide dough in two halves, roll each into a 10” long log about 1 3/4" in diameter. Wrap securely with saran wrap. Logs can be shaped again once wrapped and starting to chill to ensure they keep their round log shape. Chill until firm, about 1 hour but this can be done up to 2 days in advance, but keep chilled.
Preheat oven to 350F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silpat liners. Remove the plastic wrap and, using a sharp knife, slice each log into 1/4” thick rounds. Place on cookie sheets about 1” apart.
Bake until cookies are firm but only slightly browned on the edges, about 14-16 minutes. Transfer to wire racks after cooling for 1 minute or so. Allow to cool completely. Repeat with remaining dough log, using cooled sheets and fresh parchment paper each time.
ICING DIRECTIONS Whisk together icing sugar and fresh lemon juice until smooth, adding more
lemon juice if too thick to drizzle. Drizzle over cookies as desired. Immediately sprinkle decorative sprinkles if using. Allow icing to set for about 10 minutes before storing in airtight container.

Dryad’s Moon | New Moon in Taurus | May 11, 2021
“Shall I not have intelligence with the Earth? Am I not partly leaves and vegetable mould myself? -Henry David Thoreau
The Dryad is the shy, quiet spirit of the tree that does not differentiate between self and the rest of Nature. Taurus is said to be the most earthly of the Earth signs. So on this moon, this Dryad’s Moon, we reflect on Nature, on the things that make our life possible and more enjoyable.
We look closely at objects which we may perceive as “inanimate.” If these objects (wooden coffee tables, a favorite book, coffee beans) originated from a living being, are they really inanimate? If they came from the living, but their genetic makeup has shifted slightly, are they no longer living? The sunlight they took in, the nourishment they received, the joy of the rain or the pain from being torn down, do the remnants of those emotions and experiences remain?
On this Moon, we thank these objects for giving us a better, more pleasant life full of caffeine, insightful passages, clothing to keep us warm.
Maybe like the Dryad we find ways to connect with Nature, something so familiar to us even though the majority of us rarely come into contact with it daily. Maybe we take a walk barefoot. Maybe we sit in a park and take in the fresh air (socially distanced of course). Maybe we recognize the beautiful circle that is the transaction of breath between human and tree. We exhale Carbon Dioxide, the trees inhale it. The trees exhale Oxygen, we inhale it. Maybe that is the most important realization of this New Moon, remembering our roots.

Infant’s New Moon in Aries | April 12, 2021
The new moon is all about new beginnings and fresh starts, synonymous with the Fool in tarot. The Fool is represented by the number 0, a number of limitless possibilities. The journey of the Major Arcana cards is symbolic of the Fool’s journey through life from birth to death which is why the card can be placed both at the beginning and the end of the Major Arcana card lineup.
During the time of the new moon, we are in this limitless in between, sandwiched between death and rebirth. Throughout our life we experience many deaths and rebirths, both literal and figurative.
Taking a note from my Inner Child Fairy-Tale Tarot, the Fool appears as Little Red Cap, more popularly known as Little Red Riding Hood. She journeys through the woods, innocent and curious, only to be led astray by the wolf who in the end devours her. The story does have a happy ending, however (at least for Little Red and the grandmother!); a huntsman rescues Little Red and the grandmother from the stomach of the wolf, rebirthing the two with knowledge and insight to lead them through the rest of life’s journey.
Aries is the child of the Zodiac. They launch the beginning of the astrological calendar. Ruled by Mars, they have an innate need to be first, the best, the warrior to come out on top. They are paired with the Solar Plexus Chakra (self-esteem, confidence, personal power) and Warrior archetype. But with every light side, there is a polar opposite dark side, or the Servant, in relation to the Warrior.
What role are you playing in your life’s journey: Servant or Warrior?
When we are submissive, our self-worth is weakened and we become disempowered. As the dominant Warrior, like Little Red, we take control of our lives and become the hero or heroine of our life’s journey. We may meet some wolves along the way and experience some deaths and rebirths, but ultimately the knowledge we gain leads us to a more illuminated inner self, ready for anything life’s cards (or the Major Arcana) deals us.
✨✨✨✨✨
MEDITATIONS
Think of someone in your life who you see as a Warrior. It could be a friend, colleague, guardian, even someone famous. What about that person means “Warrior” to you? Do you identify with any of these qualities? Take one or more of these attributes and turn them into a mantra. Ex: “I can say no.” “I have a positive outlook.” “I make things happen!” Repeat this to yourself in a mirror, or whenever you feel your mind wandering to a place of doubt.
Maybe you want something a little more active to get your inner fire going! Think of something you can do that you’ve never done before that is brave and courageous! Ex: climb a mountain, try a new activity (horseback riding, archery, etc.), make a decision to go for what you want! These activities are meant to show you that YOU are in control of your life!
We all have wars within us. Life is a constant battle of yes versus no, right versus wrong, light over dark. This new moon is an opportunity to take back your power and control of your life and be the Warrior of your own destiny, fighting for your highest good and potential. Remember: “A spiritual Warrior is thankful for the challenges and obstacles it faces because it knows the way it grows and develops is by facing life with grace and grit.” -Ambika Wauters

The Gift of Vulnerability
I’m a few weeks away from finishing my 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training certificate and wrote my first Dharma Talk this past week! As an amateur blogger, this was an exercise that felt like coming home. I’m excited to share my voice with classes in the future! Enjoy and blessed be.
As the weather starts to warm and the Earth prepares for its rebirth, it got me thinking about how vulnerable and sometimes scary a birth or rebirth can be. There’s a very naked aspect to it. As humans, we’re born completely nude. Think about tiny flower buds. They have no leaves, no flowers yet, they’re just these tiny little sproutlings popping up from the dirt.
But in that vulnerable state, there’s a lot of beauty in it, too. It’s the raw, stripped down version of ourself. It’s this state of infinite possibilities to be whatever you want to be.
This next passage is from Breathing Love: Meditation in Action by Jennie Lee
How could I possibly be known in all my less-than-perfectness and still be worthy of love?
We all fear the potential rejection that comes with being fully seen. Our egos feel vulnerable when at risk for judgement or criticism, so we hide our inner frailties and strive to present only the strong or positive aspects of self to the world.
Authentic relationships are forged through the willingness to share the ways in which we do not feel strong or capable, or have made mistakes, and by encountering others when they share their weaknesses with us. As we practice compassionate self-acceptance, we can allow others to see us in our imperfection. We are relieved of having to make excuses, blame, hide, posture, defend, or hope that someone will think we are different from how we are. When the heart is open, the soul is free. Transparency is wildly liberating.

The Raging Moon | New Moon in Scorpio | November 15, 2020
This year has been a transformative year for all. In the physical and spiritual realm, we have all had to deal with death. Many of us have had to rework our entire lifestyles and careers. There has been a loss of loved ones, jobs, money, homes, and so much more. The world is an ongoing dumpster fire.
But with all of this burning and crumbling and destruction, comes the ash from which we can rebuild, be reborn, and rise like phoenixes.
Pluto, God of the Underworld and ruling planet of Scorpio, ushers us during this New Moon (also referred to as the Dark Moon) into the depths of our souls, the home of our shadow selves, our deepest desires and secrets, and the not-so-pretty pieces of self that we push down for no one to see.
Find those pieces and observe, listen. With no motive to change any part of those shadow pieces, just be. It is the understanding which leads to compassion.
“We have two selves. One the world needs us to be — compliant — and the shadow. Ignore it and life is forever suffering.” -The Countess of Cortez
Water sign Moons are not known for being particularly rational, so embrace that! Throw rationality out of the window and reclaim the irrational pieces that we were taught to repress.
All of those pieces in your brain that are telling you no, you can’t, that won’t work... CAST. THAT. OUT. I bind you, Nancy! The Plutonian energy of Scorpio is all about power. This New Moon is urging you to reclaim that power! The world is crazy right now. Anything is possible. Now is the time to release all that was and make room for new beginnings.
This morning I drew the Ace of Feathers in the Brady Tarot deck. Traditionally in tarot, this would be the suit of wands, linked with the element fire. The word inspiration appears. Perhaps in a creative sense, but also inspiration is fueled by passion. Fire is the first and primary element, that which can ignite, but also destroy.
This card is reminiscent of the traditional Tower card in tarot, but it being the Ace of Feathers, it is the beginning of the journey through the Minor Arcana of Fire. All Aces in the Minor Arcana symbolize the elements in their purest form, not having been molded by the world yet.
All this to say, find your passion, find your fire, and light up your world.
Between Life & Death
The phoenix must burn to emerge.
The answer that will come, possibly today or tomorrow, is literally a matter of life and death. People will keep or lose their reproductive rights. People will keep or lose their marriages being valid. People will continue to be united with or stripped from their families.
The morning of the election I prayed to the Triple Goddess: Maiden, Mother, Crone. All women, no matter what age, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, will all be impacted. I prayed to Artemis, Goddess of the hunt, wild nature, self, and asked if I should prepare to fight. I prayed to Selene, Goddess of the Moon, and asked if I should go with the flow, turn up my empathy, turn inward for strength. I prayed to Hekate, Goddess of magick and spells and the underworld, and asked if I should prepare for death, for a rebirth, for a journey from the crossroads.
I pulled the Justice card.
For me this meant two things: either justice will be served and some sense of balance will be restored, or we must prepare to fight for justice, for what is fairly deserved, though not what all want.
The Justice card in the Brady Tarot deck features a turkey vulture. The artist of this deck, Emi Brady, calls vultures “the gate-keepers between life and death.” They consume the dead and diseased, to then birth new life. Either way this election turns out, there will be fire, there will be death, there will be ash, and new life will grow from it.
Today I pulled the Eight of Roots. In this deck, the suit of pentacles is replaced by roots. And actually, by chance (or otherworldly magick), the Justice card appeared just beneath the Eight of Roots.
What I took out of this card was that we must stay the course, stay strong, and work together. Roots are the foundation, the building blocks of all great things. With strong roots, everything is possible.
In looking deeper into this card, the eastern bumblebees are banning together, working tirelessly underground building their community. Up from the entangled roots grows dense grass. And just in the distance is a cluster of trees who have joined their branches and leaves together.
“There is a growing body of thought that suggests a forest is not a collection of isolated creatures, but a single organism -- like a hive of bees.”
Maybe your way of fighting is under the surface, unseen, but the true foundation of the fight. Maybe you are banning together with others, linking roots, linking arms, to give others the chance to grow and shine. Maybe you are on the front lines, standing tall, dense, sturdy, like a forest of trees.
Whoever you are, whatever your fight, find your community. The battle has only just begun. And justice will be given where it is due.
Scorpio Season | October 23 - November 21
Happy Scorpio Season, witches! The Sun entered Scorpio yesterday, and with that came the First Quarter Blood Moon. The journey through the waxing and waning of this moon cycle, and for the entirety of Scorpio Season, is all about remembrance, release, and renewal.
As we move into the darker months of the year, animals move into hibernation, plants begin to die, the Earth enters a slumber in order to rest up for the spring months of rebirth. We focus on the life cycles, not only physically, but mentally and emotionally, too. The trees release their leaves to fertilize the ground. The crops have been harvested to sustain life through the winter months. We remember and honor our ancestors and those who have passed before us on Samhain.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
This morning I did a tarot check in and pulled the Tower card. One of the more literal cards for this season. While it may look terrifying and like the world is burning down, focus on the renewal aspect of it.
I used the Brady Tarot deck by Rachel Pollack. It features the animals and plants of North America, and a portion of the proceeds are donated to North American environmental and indigenous nonprofits.
In this version of the Tower, a dead tree is struck by lightening and bursts into flames. Some animals are fleeing, some are attempting to, and some refuse to leave. Similarly to when we as humans cling to what is no longer serving us. Why do we do this? Fear of the unknown?
Some of us live for the adventure of life. Others, not so much. We choose to stay because it is safe, familiar, comfortable.
But with the death of this tree, or the ending of a chapter of your life, comes the ashes of what was, and the opportunity to nourish new life, new beginnings.
xx, Erika
Balance
“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.” -Albert Einstein
When is the last time you checked in with yourself? Are your elements balanced? Is work consuming your life, or have you been unemployed due to COVID and now you have an abundance of free time that you don’t know what to do with?
As we approach Mabon on September 21, we can start to prepare by looking at our lives (internally and externally) and find that balance. Mabon is the time when the night and day are of equal balance, so let’s start there!
Think about the things you do during the daytime versus the night. During the day we go to work, we see friends, we exercise, we take a walk, we eat. At night, we are home, inside, we rest, we sleep. Expand this out to what we do during the Spring/Summer versus the Fall/Winter! In the Spring/Summer we celebrate blooming flowers, animals being born, the warmth of the Sun calling us outside! In the Fall and Winter, we add layers to our clothing, we spend more time indoors, the animals rest in hibernation.
Are your dark sides (internal emotions/thoughts) and your light sides (outward appearance/lifestyle) balanced? Are you spending too much time socializing, working, being out and about? Or are you spending your days mulling over thoughts all day long, cooped up inside with the windows closed and the curtains drawn?
If you’ve been doing more of one or the other, switch it up!
Light balancing ideas: Call a friend Take a walk outside Exercise Do a craft or physical work with your hands
Dark balancing ideas: Read a book Journal Rest Meditate Do some tarot!
If you’re ready to check in with your elemental balance, make yourself a little circle with an item representing each element! I love using a stone I’d like to work with for Earth, a bell for Air, a candle for Fire, and a bowl of water for (you guessed it) Water.
Once you’ve grounded and centered yourself, think about where you may be out of balance and what steps you can take to bring that balance back! Ask for guidance from your spirit guides, deities, gods/goddesses, the Universe, whatever higher energy you work with. Intention is key, so keep your focus! Once you feel ready, recite:
Earth and Air, Water and Fire Grant to me my heart’s desire. Balance now my troubled life Wash away confusions strife. Even out the high and low Gently soothe the ebb and flow. Dark and light in balance be From extremes please set me free. Calm, serene and peaceful I With ease and grace my days will fly. As above and so below Balance to my life bestow.
Thank whatever higher energies you were working with and reground yourself if you feel like you escaped a little during your meditation.
For an extra oomph, think about doing this every Friday as a check-in. Friday is Freya’s day (also associated with Venus, Libra, the scales). It’s the perfect day for some self-love and care and focusing on where you are mentally, physically, spiritually!
. . .
Now that you’ve focused on balancing yourself, let’s add to that balance and take some time to learn about others! Enjoy this post from @antisemitismwatchdog on Instagram!
xoxo, Rick or Treeeat
