can't believe people are getting mad over sam not immediately leaving the grandma and choosing mon, and mon letting herself be kept in secret knowing sam in getting married still.
i guess that's what happens when tropes like this are usually so romanticized but i feel like gap the series is very grounded towards human decisions.
need everyone to realize sam has been with grandma since she was a child. when she lost her family, she had grandma. hell that ep 11 showed how fcking crazy the grandma is in guilt tripping and gaslighting. i did not expect someone in sam's situation to just drop her only known family so easily esp if she's been honed into thinking she had no other emotions to feel but gratefulness.
and with mon's decision to be an 'adultress'... she just learned about sam's fcked up history. if you loved someone so much, your first thought wouldn't be to run and be mad that she's eloped in a situation she can't easily escape. mon is a family person. she understood that the wedding was for her family. mon tried to stay because sam needed her.
that moment in the couch, it was obvious they were living in hope and desperation. sam desperately needed mon, mon desperately wanted to be there for sam so they made decisions then based off of that emotion.
obviously reality crept into them eventually. which is why mon needed out and sam finally took a stand.
gap has always been shown as a mature story. i don't get why people still haven't understood that characters will make stupid decisions sometimes and let them be. i know the start was all fluffy and some expected it to stay that way but they're all flawed characters in that show. they ain't always gonna choose the right thing immediately.
breaking the cycle of generational abuse takes time.
the truth of that cannot be overstated. for a child, it warps and reshapes everything: their understanding of themselves, what their place is in the world and how they engage with it.
when we first meet Sam, she just seems like a cold, aloof, ever-composed high achiever. the more we learn about her past, the clearer it becomes that this was by design, not by choice.
Sam learned from a young age that love and acceptance were contingent upon her compliance. it was transactional- to be earned by meeting her grandmother's expectations, never freely given with no conditions. she took the one thing a child needs the most and dangled it like a prize over Sam’s head, making her work for it.
and if Sam needed any further motivation not to stray from path she was placed on, all she had to do was look to her sisters- both of their lives a tragic example of the consequences of disobeying. imagine how afraid she had to be, and for so, so long. it's heartbreaking.
then Mon came along- letting light and so much love in with her.
with that in mind, next week's preview wasn't a big shock to me. painful, yes- but mainly because it rings so terribly true. the roots of abuse run deep and are long-reaching- often much further than we expect.
I can count on one hand the amount of times I've actually liked high-tension or conflict in a finale. it usually feels like a cheap emotional ploy- lazy writing in an attempt to keep the audience coming back. in my opinion, that's absolutely not what we're seeing here.
the end still remains to be seen, but I have no doubt Sam will finally, permanently end the cycle. it's just that a little more work, a little more struggle, unfortunately- has to happen first.
a toxic foundation laid over a lifetime has finally been cracked, fractured. thanks to love, the biggest work is done. for me, next week doesn't seem like a step back at all.
it's just the last breaking of the wheel.
a note on Nueng, my beloved: sometimes, tough love is incredibly necessary, especially when you're so far gone in a situation that you can't see it for what it is. I was thrilled Nueng was there to provide an equally-strong opposing voice to their grandmother's authority. the one point I strongly disagreed with her on is calling Sam "soft" for continuing to bend to her grandmother's will.
Sam's reluctance to leave even when it's killing her has everything to do with a lifetime of conditioning and love for her grandmother (which she doesn't deserve)- she's not weak; she's a victim. she did find her strength when she walked away, and I fully believe she's going to realize just how strong, capable and worthy of love she is by the end.

NCIS Hawaii: 2x03- Some Kacy moments
“I’ve seen you come up against a lot of obstacles, and every time, you overcome them.”
They’re so happy 🥺🥺
NCIS: Hawai’i - 2x02 - “You’re lucky, you know. Your team, your boss. You… you have each other’s backs and you still want to get a beer at the end of the day.”
NCIS: Hawai’i - 2x02
As someone from Texas, I have never related more to a character then when Lucy said “and you know I’m from Texas right?” Cause I’ve legit said that to multiple friends from out of state when they challenged me 🤣
My wish for 2x03 is for Lucy to be the one to wire Kate up for her undercover assignment, because she doesn't trust anyone else to do that, and Lucy gets to touch her gf's body intimately in a non-sexual setting but then it just brings up all those feelings and sensations and when Lucy finally looks up at Kate, they both get that intense look in their eyes but Kate reads Lucy's mind and reassures her that she will be careful and they kiss. Afterwards when Kate leaves for the mission, they share one last look; Lucy is worried and Kate is determined.
LISTEN!!!! normally i'd say that this wish is perfect for fanfic. (and like, yes fic writers take note because i would love to read this.) BUT given last night's episode this idea is totally within the realm of possibility. the season two premiere gave us multiple (i think 5) scenes that could've come straight from a fanfic. and i really believe this ep is setting the tone for the season (the way the pilot set the tone for kacy's will they/won't they thing in season 1).
which means, in my professional opinion, there is a greater than 0 chance that we will actually get to see a gorgeous moment like this on our screens !!!!
(Also here are stills from 2x03 for those who haven’t seen them yet)

Ok, so I think people don't fully grasp how special this is... here we have a spin off of a show that's very popular and well established yes but also basically could be seen as copaganda and a military promo tool, so what I'm getting at is that NCIS and its first spin off NCIS LA are catering to men and not any men but the 'want to see manly man heroes' type. Sure, both shows have strong female characters as well, but they practically spill over with heteronormativity and they've struggled with misogyny in front as well as behind the camera over the years.
But then came NCIS Hawaii and not only does it have a woman of color as lead character, they also implemented two queer women as main characters, and right from the start they made their relationship and its development a vital part of the show, something that was reserved for the male/female partnerships in the NCIS franchise so far. So considering the usual NCIS audience, they took a big risk here with the whole new female fronted direction of the new show and I'm honestly surprised they even got studio bosses to actually sign off on it.
And then not only do they depict these two queer women as interesting, complex characters, but also tell a compelling, swoon-worthy love story that stretched out over the whole first season (and is still continuing in season 2). They gave us the kind of wlw love story usually only found in lesfic romance novels or fanfic. Like, overall we have the one-night to forever sentiment (which we learn when Lucy tells Ernie how they first met and had a one-night (two-nights) stand), a kind of enemies to lovers tale (with them working for different government agencies and being work rivals at first), there's a little bit of the melting ice-queen trope (Kate trying to be distant and cold at first, but Lucy getting through her facade), they have the tol/smol and blonde/brunette thing going on... then when we finally think they'll be happy together, all comes chrashing down with the arrival of Kate's (ex-) girlfriend and some major misunderstandings and miscommunication, followed by devastation and heart-break and angst, oh the delicious angst! They try to avoid each other but have to find a way to work together, and immediately Lucy gets in danger while Kate tries to save her, but doesn't want her to know. And when Lucy's rightful anger simmers down, they start to communicate again, they fight, but in true lesbian fashion they process what went wrong. And Kate tries to give Lucy space and she grovels and walks on egg shells around her, but the pining! So much pining! And Lucy tries to move on, starts dating, but then Kate is in danger and gets hurt, and the feelings are back full force, like she couldn't survive if something happened to Kate despite all the heart-break. The scene where an injured Kate in casual clothes stands before Lucy, all vulnerable and soft, oh my god! And then Lucy breaks both of their heart all over again, but at the same time it's clear they still love each other so much. We get more pining, like an almost unbearable amount, then Ernie meddles and tells Lucy to give Kate another chance and he encourages Kate to go big or go home and she does. Boy, does she ever. In front of all of their friends and colleagues she serenades Lucy, with an Adele song (!) no less, and it's glorious and cheesy and so damn romantic, like talking about big romantic gestures. Lucy is reluctant at first, but then can't help but give in, and who wouldn't? It's the big finale and they kiss and laugh and dance and it's wonderful.
And that's only been the first season! So far it doesn't look like their relationship will fade into the background in season 2. On the contrary, first episode of season 2, despite being a crossover which means an even bigger cast and usually little to no time to focus on any established romantic relationships, they gave us so many Kate/Lucy scenes, it's truly baffling. And the promos for the next two eps promise lots of Kacy content as well, like Kate goimg undercover, Kate introducing her FBI colleagues to Lucy... So often in shows once the only two queer people have gotten together, their relationship is barely mentioned anymore, and it seems like the writers don't know any longer what to do with them. But it doesn't look like that will happen here. And with the way their love story has been told so far, I'm fully convinced there's a queer woman (or more) in the writers room who is a also a well-versed, long time fanfic writer and she/they calls the shots and the others just go with it, and fuck yeah!
Anyway, sorry for the long rambling. I just had to get this out there. Like, I still can't believe we get ALL that beautiful wlw rep from a NCIS spin off of all things... like if someone had told me a year ago, I'd say they were crazy.
