Cernunnos anon here - yeah! From my research so far, he definitely has NOT seemed like a fertility style god and it's been very off putting to see depictions of him as such as I don't feel that's aligned at all with the kind of communication I've had. Thank you for sharing, as I know everyone's experience can be personal. Were there any resources that were especially helpful for researching him?
The fertility god thing was a later syncretization with Pan, so lemme share with you the most lovely Google Doc I've ever seen that discusses Cernunnos: Not Your Mother's Horned God: The Cernunnos Primer.
The author also talked about some other sources they recommend here in this post.
I talk more about some of my other experiences with Cernunnos in my cernunnos tag, if you want to know more about my own UPG.
I hope that this gives you a place to start, anon!
~Jasper
Valfǫðr of many tricks who has traveled the nine worlds; Rider of Yggdrasil who sees and hears all, and who casts judgement upon humankind, hear my plea. Though I am but one among your children, I humbly ask that you bestow wisdom upon me. I am faced with a crossroads, and my rightful path is unclear. Divine father and soul-maker, tell me of the tree that holds all life, the one that is the source of all mystery, so that I may know once more my place in this world.
Speakshaker,
Allfather,
He Who Hung on High,
Your many names,
I sing alive.
To you I make my evening toast,
and raise my voice is proudful boast.
Oā Odin,
Great God of the Sky,
To ride with you,
would be my pride.
My arms are raised,
my voice sings high,
so that your blessing may come,
from beyond the sky.
Hi! I really love your worship posts and wanted to ask if you could make ones for Loki and Odin please? Thank you :)
Ways of Worshipping the All-Father Odin
(Loki's post coming soon)
- have an altar dedicated to him, as much as Norse Gods want direct and equality in communication they are fans of lavish things and flattery
- alcohol such as red wine, mead, aquavit or whiskey
- a nice chalice to pour liquid offerings into
- a mug of coffee, take a sip first and then offer the rest to him
- write and burn a poem for him
- write dramatic stories and music and read them to him, he loves drama, pour your heart into it
- share jokes with him!
- do your shadow work
- offer your pain and suffering, feel your emotions, write them down and burn them as an offering
- spend time in the woods/nature
- FLATTERY, it goes a long way with the Norse Gods
- learn and use his many names such as, the All-Father, the Victory-Father, Grimnir, Hanged Man, Wotan, Masked One, Rune God, Jolnir, Gelding, Grey beard and the One eyed Wanderer
(Knowing and using the many names is a form of flattery)
- fruit
- horse, Raven, wolf and bear imagery
- black feather, raven skulls etc (ethically sourced)
- horse shoes
- wolf pawprints, fur and teeth (ethically sourced)
- Runes: Ansuz, Wunjo, Gebo and Othala.
- learn Rune magic and Rune divination
- the Hanged Man tarot card
- dedicate a form of divination to him as Odin, being associated with Horses often led him to being associated with divination š¤·āāļø
- a statue of himself
- black, red, grey, cobalt or purple candles
- partake in rituals and celebrations such as Sigrblót (April 15th), Yggdrasil day (April 22nd), the Last Harvest (October 31st), and Yule
- Red meats especially beef
- smoked salmon
- leaks, asparagus and garlic
- eat well! Dedicate the meal to him and his wolves Geri and Freki
- feast! Spoil yourself on Wednesdays! (And spoil Odin a bit too)
- offer your secrets and speak respectfully as you would to others, the Norse Gods prefer to be spoken to as equals
- (a pipe with) tobacco
- The Nine Sacred Herbs: ash leaves, elm leaves, parsley, woad, cinquefoil, horehound, periwinkle
- make donations to or do volunteer work at a veterans organisations
- riddles and puzzles
- many heathens say that it is best to directly commune with the All-Father and ask what he wants specifically, he is a jack of all trades deity, and encompasses many aspects such as, war, poetry, riddles, kingship, magic, inspiration, death, self-empowerment, transformation, leadership, travel, madness, academia and wisdom meaning there are so many different types of offerings you could give him
- acts of courage such as standing up for yourself or others
- be wise, know or learn your boundaries in all different areas of life, financial, spiritual, social etcetera
- learn! There is so much in this world to learn, dedicate your time studying to Odin, whether it be mythos, war history or just studying for fun or classes, dedicate that time to him, maybe even light his candle
- dedicate the 9th month of the year to your practice with the All-Father, the number 9 is sacred to him, if you can find multiple ways to incorporate it into your offerings and practice as well
- become an educator, a professor, a leader or a tutor, allow yourself the ability to learn and teach at the same time
DEVOTIONAL ACTS AND OFFERINGS TO ODIN
~May also serve as ideas for an altar~
Disclaimer: I have only worked with Odin briefly (for about 8 months a year ago), so while these come from experiences and research, they will not be as extensive as Fenrir's list. :)
Physical Offerings:

Runes (As the God who discovered the Runes! I made my own rune set from natural clay and dedicated it to him, but you can also buy a set)
Drawings and Art of Him
Poetry or Stories you've Written
Candles and Incense (usually in muskier/more masculine scents)

Bird Imagery (Occasionally you can find Crystal Ravens in some shops)
Spearheads and Arrowheads
A Drinking Horn
Draw his symbols (Triple Horn of Odin, the Valknot)

How To Dry Herbs
Work best for:
Air drying works best for low-moisture like marjoram, oregano, rosemary and dill.
What to do:
Trim fresh herbs at an angle to protect the rest of the plant. Put the bundle of herbs, stem-side up.
Hang or over a week, ideally in a cool, dark place.
Storage:
Herbs are best stored in airtight glass containers. They're uses range from cooking, tea, tincture, even decoration.
Drying:
Gather 5-10 branches together and tie with string or a rubber band. The smaller the bundle, the easier and faster they will dry.
I would love to see more tips for those who don't have developed psychic abilities yet! I've tried to get into spirit work many times, but I can never feel or hear anything, it's very unmotivating, and i assume many beginners who suffer the same. Would you have any advice?
Psychic Abilities, Communication, and Discernment Masterpost
Honestly the best advice I can give is to keep practicing! I know it can get frustrating to keep going without getting any results, but this truly is a thing that can take a lot of time and dedication. While you practice, take advantage of other communication methods; Try out using tarot cards, a pendulum, automatic writing, etc!Ā

[Spirit Communication Masterpost]Ā by myself
Try to remember thatĀ āhearingā spirits isnāt necessarily universal, which means people hear spirits differently. Iāll be entirely honest- some of the time if Iām not focusing, I hear the spiritās voices as my own inner voice (meaning they sound weirdly like me). I have to do a lot of discernment and work to uncover what is actually a spirit. Itās super frustrating, and this may be what youāre dealing with right now! Iāve created a helpful list of questions and ideas that I generally go through when Iām trying to discern whether Iām just hearing myself, or a spirit.
Try to do what I do, and just listen to any thought or voice that passes through your mind, and dissect it. Some questions to ask yourself:
Is this something you would actually say? Is this something you would actually think?Ā
Are there words you wouldnāt normally say? Are there words that you donāt even know?
Is it a coherent thought? Does it make sense?
Does it feel like you said it or does it feel like it originated from an outside source? Does it catch you off guard or startle you?
Is there an accent? Any sort of tone or inflection that does not sound like your own?Ā
Is it normal for you to have random thoughts? Do you normally respond to yourself in your head?
Is the thought a response to something you said? How does it relate to what you said?Ā
Ask multiple questions- do the responses all sound the same? Do they all add up?
Does it sound like an actual conversation with someone else (even if it sounds like your voice)?Ā
Do they coincide with a spirit visiting? Try practicing with and without a spirit around to create a baseline for your experiences.
Do a reading- does it confirm what you heard?Ā
As for feeling, for the most part you donāt physically feel anything. Sometimes you may get what I call phantom touches, which to me is that weird feeling that thereās pressure against your body in some form. You can also feel them as different manifestations, like a breeze, warmth, or cold chill. Some spirits may feelĀ āstrongerā and more present in those manifestations than others.
I would recommend just sitting still (in a position that wonāt cause any body part to fall asleep or cause discomfort), in an area with minimal air flow, and just take not of anything you may notice or think you feel. Ask yourself:
Is there a breeze even without the airflow? Is it warm or cold? Is there normally a breeze like that? Do you feel the breeze if you move to another area? Is it the same strength and feeling?
Do you feel unusually hot or cold? Is this normal for you? Does it cover your entire body or stay in one spot?
Is there a feeling of pressure? Is it in one spot? Move that body part, is it still there? Is it natural for you to feel pressure?
Do you feel tingling? Does it cover your entire body or stay in one spot? Is it natural for you to feel tingling? Does it go away when you move?
Is there a feeling of discomfort in a particular spot? Move that body part, is it still there? Is it natural for you to feel discomfort in that area?
Walk around, do you still feel those sensations? Do you feel them in another position?
Do you still feel those sensations when repeating this exercise?Ā
Do you still feel those sensations outside of the exercise?Ā
Do these sensations change or move? Do they get stronger or weaker over time?Ā
Do they coincide with a spirit visiting? Try practicing with and without a spirit around to create a baseline for your experiences.Ā
If you work with a spirit, ask them to touch your shoulder, and then a different body part. Do you feel any sort of sensation? Is it consistent even in different areas?
Do a reading- does it confirm what you felt?
I hope this helps!
Bringing Out Your Inner Dragon
This was something I crafted alongside my dragon companions that I thought others might find valuable. It's designed to utilize the energy we associate with dragons, find that within ourselves, and bring it to the surface for a boost of confidence, self-control, and awareness of our inner power. This can also be used in a dragon copinglink kind of way if desired.
What You'll Need
A candle
Dragon's Blood/Breath Incense
A bathtub
Any meditation tools you prefer (I'm using an accupressure mat and prayer beads)
Optional: Anything dragon-y you'd like to include to help create the atmosphere! This could be things like dragon figurines, ambient music, wearing special jewelry, whatever helps get you into that headspace. If you add more candles, just make sure the main candle stands out from the rest.
Instructions
Start drawing your bath. Add whatever bath salts/melts/bubbles you like, just keep in mind you'll be putting your head under the water later. Set the ambiance.
While the bath is filling, light your candle and incense. In whatever words feel right to you, call dragon energy forward into the space to help guide you. Any dragon guides/companions/etc you'd like to invoke can also be invited here.
Imagine the bath like it's the fluid inside of an egg. Your egg! Let your wash clean you inside and out, then sit back and relax. Close your eyes and focus on the breath. You're in this egg, slowly forming and gathering yourself. This is the time to think about what being a dragon means to you, what it looks like for you specifically, the precise way that your dragon energy feels. Take as long as you need to answer these questions honestly.
Once you're ready, submerge yourself (if you can't submerge your whole body don't worry, just try to get your head.) Take a few beats to really center this idea in your mind, then emerge once you're ready to "hatch." Drain the bath and dry yourself.
From this point forward, treat yourself as if you are a dragon! Do what feels right, move and express yourself freely. Speak or roar if you want. Just let it come out the way it wants to. (Try to avoid eating anything, though, since that's very grounding and we want to maintain this headspace.)
Once you're ready to wrap up, it's time to meditate again. It's fine and normal for your mind to wander, just gently try to keep at least a piece of your focus on the breath. We're letting this energy sort of settle into place. If you've invoked any dragons to assist you, feel for what messages they have for you.
Time to wrap up. Wiggle your toes, open your eyes, and start grounding. If you'd like to extinguish your dragon candle, be sure to thank it before doing so. Thank any dragon helpers and leave them some kind of offering as a thank you.
If you try this, let me know how it goes for you!! I'd love to hear peoples' results.
Tips for Discernment
Discernment is a crucial skill for any magic worker. Itās how we separate the magic from the mundane, reality from our imagination, and reduce the risk of being deluded or manipulated. Everbody already naturally does this a little bit, but actively strengthening the skill can be difficult for a beginner. Here are some tips, tricks, and techniques that have helped me.Ā
Write everything down.Ā When doing a spell or working with a spirit, keep a written record of what you feel, say, witness, etc. This will help give you something objective to look back on later, which is a huge help for doing any post-research. You never know what details may give you a lead.
Pick a rule forĀ āsignsā and stick with it. What do you believe about coincidences? When do you believe something is a message from the Universe or your gods? Create a litmus test/threshhold for what you consider a sign; it doesnāt really matter what it is, so long as itās consistently applied. That way, youāre saving your energy for the more important stuff instead of worrying/wondering about the small fry. On that noteā¦
TheĀ āRule of Threeā (NOT to be confused with the Wiccan Rede.) This is a common discernment method for the concept above. One time seeing something is an instance, two is a coincidence, and three is a message.
When you ask for signs, be specific. Ask for something unique/specific enough that you wouldnāt reasonably expect it to happen anyway, but not so rare that it has no chance of manifesting. Color + Object (ex: let me see a purple feather) is a good method. That way you know exactly what your sign will be.Ā
The Gut Test. Sometimes when Iām communicating a spirit and I feel like somethingās off, Iāll take a moment in my head and think,Ā āthis isnāt real. Iām making this conversation up.ā Listen to how your gut responds. Does it agree right away? Does saying that feel incorrect, like itās truly legitimate? Was the conversation legitimate up to a certain point? Listen to your gut and act accordingly.Ā
The Mimic Test. When working with spirits andĀ āhearingā a voice in your head, try to recreate it with your own inner mind voice. Can you get it to be the same voice? Same volume? If you can, then youāre probably safe writing it off as your imagination.
PRACTICE. Practice. Practice. Practice feeling the energy of your plants. Practice feeling your own energy. Describe it in detail. Practice feeling the energy of any ritual objects. Practice communicating with a spirit you trust, like a guide or Ancestors. Just like a muscle, discernment becomes stronger with repeated use and withers when ignored. Practice on little things to keep you sharp for the big stuff.
Donāt Beat Yourself Up. Itās understandably a little embarrassing to admit we were wrong about something. And thatās okay! Pobodyās Nerfect! Recognizing our discernment mistakes makes us stronger practitioners, because it means youāre critically thinking about what youāre doing and striving to improve. At worst, a practitioner who never admits a lapse in discernment is actually missing that chance for growth, and runs a very high risk of being taken down a flight of fancy and getting increasingly disconnected from the real world. So be kind to yourself! Growing is good.Ā
How I Cleanse
Hermit-Wizard's Custom Craft Series Pt. 3
First off, I physically clean & organize. Messy or dirty spaces capture energy & allow it to stagnate. Everything in it's place. Tidy, scrubbed. It's a high-investment work.
While cleansing, I visualize stale or negative energy as the actual grime itself - I'm breaking it up & removing that grime.
I also highly recommend blasting positive music for this. And I don't mean meditation, energy reiki YouTube shit. I don't mean Bach. I mean songs that make you sing along & make you wanna dance. Personally, I have a playlist... And there's a lot of Panic! at The Disco on there.
The music actually acts as sound cleansing, which vibrates stagnant energy, shakes off the cobwebs, and breaks up the weird "sticky blobs" I get in low-traffic areas like my guest room or the corners by the ceiling. Like jiggling ice until it shatters.
Open the windows, let in the light and fresh air. Turn on the fans. Shake out the sheets. Get a flow going, to move in new energy and let the old energy see it's way out.
If there's a particularly bad vibe - I tell it to do it's job & fuck up a pedophile. I personally believe there is an equal balance of positive & negative energy in the world, so I can't "fix" it. I simply give it a more meaningful purpose
Dance. Sing. Get wiggly. Prance through the space like a very happy deer. Ideally with some sort of smoke or sprinkling cleanse.
Burn herbs or use a blessed spray. I've used dried rosemary I've grown myself in the past, and dried/aged Pine twigs. Some folks use bay leaves. Personally, incense does the trick & but so does Febreeze in a pinch. Use what you have access to.
I even know folks who make infusions of herbs & blessed liquid, then put them into a small cosmetics spray bottle. Witch Hazel, with a pinch of salt & a bay leaf in it. Fully charged by the moon? Perfect.
Fan around the smoke, the smell, fling the water everywhere, spray your spritzer bottle. Let the music get all those vibes moving again. And SPEAK.
Speak aloud about what you want to see out the door, what you want to invite in, give it purpose & reason. Set the tone for what energies are welcome.
Then close the doors, keep the music bopping, and keep charging those energies. Get wiggly. Cook. Dance. Chat. Make art. And keep a lit candle by the front door to make the cleansing last longer.
Guide to Ancestor Veneration
What is ancestor veneration?
Veneration simply means "to have great respect". I choose to use the term "ancestor veneration" over "ancestor work" because I believe that if you want to work with your ancestors, then you need to start by having a strong sense of respect for them. Your ancestors aren't attack dogs, nor are they slaves. They are not there for you to give orders to or treat with disrespect. Your ancestors are your family. Your ancestors are your guides and your protectors. They are the ones who came before you and are the very reason you were able to exist.
I say this because I often see people in the witchcraft and magic community try to treat spirits like attack dogs and slaves. Hell, I've seen people treat deities as such. It's pretty disturbing to me. Don't be one of those people.
Working with your ancestors is similar to all other forms of spirit work, though I wouldn't approach it the same. Your ancestors were once human. They had flaws in life and chances are some of them carried those flaws into death, too. They have their own morals and values. Not all of them deserve respect, and chances are there are some ancestors you don't want in your space. I'll address this later, though.
How do I determine who my ancestors are?
If you were raised by your blood relatives, this may be a little easier for you. The first thing you will want to do is ask your living family what they know. Parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents... Ask them what they know and remember about your past relatives. Try to write down names when you hear them. If you are lucky enough to have relatives who keep detailed documentation about your ancestry, that is even better.
Depending on where you live, public documentation can be of great help. Old newspaper articles, obituaries... Try to figure out how you can make connections this way. You'd be surprised by the information you can find.
If you really want to dive deep into your heritage, ancestry DNA kits can help you with that. It can be expensive, and the databases of these companies vary, but it can be helpful. Some can connect you to distant relatives that have used the same ancestry DNA company. They can also give you a very general idea about where your ancestors came from.
If you were adopted, or generally have zero information regarding your blood relatives, that is okay. Your adopted family is still your family, depending on how you view them. If you love your adopted family, and truly consider them family, then you can choose to work with them, too.
I personally don't believe in the whole "your blood determines who your family is" thing. Family is more complex than that to me. That being said, if your parents or other relatives have any close friends that you grew up with, they could be considered family, too. Sometimes we are lucky enough to have people come into our lives and treat us like family. If you grew up with anybody like this, and consider them to be family, they can count as an ancestor too.
What if my ancestors were bad people?
I most commonly see this question being asked by white people. They usually refer to their racist, white ancestors. I even see people go as far as to claim white people can't work with their ancestors because of this.
Here is the thing: everybody has at least a few shitty people for ancestors. Your race does not make your immune to having bad people in your ancestry.
It is up to you to look at the ancestors you know of and determine who you want in your space. You are not required to work with every single ancestor you have. You have the right to say no to an ancestor and tell them to stay away from you. You do not need to work with racist, homophobic, transphobic, or whatever else ancestors.
You can set boundaries with your ancestors.
How do I start ancestor veneration once I determine who my ancestors are and which ones I want to honor?
Start by considering an ancestor altar. This can be easy for those of you who are in the broom closet due to hateful family. You can always pass it off as a little memorial spot for your past loved ones (this isn't even a false claim- an ancestor altar is literally a place to pay your respects). If you are able to, start collecting things for an ancestor altar.
The first things I suggest looking for are photos of your ancestors and things that belonged to them, if possible. You can add jewelry, things they used for their favorite hobbies... If you can't find the exact things they used for their hobbies, you could consider buying something that they would have used.
Your ancestors will need offerings, too. I know people tend to get a little intimidated about giving spirits regular offerings, so I suggest starting small and try keeping up with a schedule. Dedicate a specific day of the week to start. Once you feel comfortable with that day, make it two days of the week. If you are comfortable giving them offerings every day, even better!
Some of the easiest offerings you can give your ancestors include coins, cash, flowers, incense, candles, tobacco products and the sacred text of their chosen religion (such as a Bible). You can also include more personal offerings, such as a handwritten letter from yourself or a piece of artwork you created for them.
Food and liquid offerings, in my opinion, are a necessity. Your ancestors deserve to be well fed, too! They may not be here in their physical form to enjoy it, but it is still appreciated regardless. Get some plates and cups specifically for the ancestors. Give them a small portion of food before you eat. Leave it on the ancestor altar until breakfast/lunch/dinner time is over. What you choose to do with the food after is up to you. Some people throw it away, others eat it themselves. Drinks are important, too. Water is the most basic liquid offering you can give. I suggest changing water offerings out daily, if you are comfortable with daily offerings. You can also offer coffee, teas, soda and alcohol.
How do I communicate with my ancestors?
For you, it is as simple as speaking. Just talk to them like you would with your living relatives. This should be an obvious thing, but I have met people who have never considered just... talking. You don't need to use divination every time you want to talk to your ancestors. Just talk out loud to them. Whenever you give them offerings at their altar, thank them for any help they give you and talk to them a bit. Let them know you are thinking of them.
In terms of figuring out messages your ancestors send you, there are a few ways to do this. Divination is one of the most common ways to get their messages to you. You could also ask them to send you signs. Personally, when I'm asking my ancestors for signs, I use divination to try and get some symbolism to look out for. If I can't get anything from divination then I ask for specific things, such as coins. If you're the type to do dream work, you can also ask your ancestors to present themselves to you in your dreams.
Communicating with the ancestors isn't limited to these things, though, so see what works best for you. Sometimes different ancestors have different preferences and communicate different than others.
What can my ancestors do for me?
As I've mentioned before, your ancestors can guide you and protect you. You may also have ancestors who wish to help you with your magic workings, too.
Don't forget that your ancestors were once living people, too. They had their own boundaries when they were alive, and chances are they've got boundaries still. Be sure to get to know them, whether it be through listening to stories about them from your living relatives or through your own means of communication. One ancestor may not offer the same guidance or assistance that another ancestor does.
