saffron had noticed her every time she'd come into the library and it had coincided with the other woman's shift. she'd bid her time, content to watch from afar with her own curiosity, and came to the conclusion that the other woman didn't talk very much. she seemed withdrawn, and saffron had been struck with the want to put a smile on her face. but alas, saffron thought the want odd and so she'd hid in the back shelves, fear and shame lacing through her so keenly that it made her slightly breathless. that had been a week ago - a week in which saffron hadn't been back to the library, a week in which she'd exiled herself in some kind of punishment. before, she had been keen to read something new everyday or every other day. stuck in listlessness and with insomnia, she often read to the pass the time at home when the silence got too loud. and now with mail taking so long to reach people, she'd stopped buying books and relied on the ones already in her personal library or the one in town. but a week had passed and she'd yet to grace the doors with a single glance, too afraid to want and too afraid to do something about it. but now, armed with a heart that beat a tad too fast, and an iron will, she set about looking for a book that she hadn't read yet - a recommendation that she'd hopefully get from the other woman.
"excuse me," voice uncharacteristically shy, out of place on a face as beautiful as hers, perhaps, saffron continued even as her voice shook the tiniest bit. "i was wondering..." bracing herself for something, for some unknown thing to happen, she stopped, breathed for a second, glanced away from a curious face and to the stacks of books. "what's your favorite book? something that i may have not read yet." the question finally arose over the silence in the library, and saffron turned her attention to the palms of her hands, which were white-knuckled around her wallet. she made the effort to relax them. @spcrrcws
Alice blinked. She'd seen this person around before, drifting through the stacks and bookshelves, but can't recall any words shared (perhaps a reminder of the return date when checking out books?) - which is fine. It's not particularly unusual, not everyone was prone to conversation.
What is odd is how soft her voice carried, nearly a whisper on the wind, and how it wavered anxiously. Was Alice that intimidating?
"... Well, that depends on what books you've read," she starts after a beat. "Personally, I have a fondness for the classics. Jane Eyre's always a good one. Pride and Prejudice, if you're into Austen. Though Persuasion is probably her most mature work... Frankenstein's also good, if you don't mind a little horror, though it's more of a tragedy than anything else I think. We also have a book that contains all of the Narnia books, though it starts with The Magician's Nephew and I think the Wardrobe would be a better introduction to the series..."
✉️ — [ victoria pedretti, 26, woman, she/her ] — Hey, is that ALICE OWENS listening to LET DOWN by RADIOHEAD? They’re known around town as THE SPARROW, because they’re KIND and OPTIMISTIC, but ever since the Departure, they’ve become more INSECURE and WITHDRAWN. They’ve lived in Redford for ONE YEAR and work at THE REDFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY as a CLERK. If you need them, you can find them in BIRCHWOOD APARTMENTS. — ( ooc - fern, 27, they/them, pst )
