((Aaron shows up at your doorstep looking for comfort after breaking up with you.))
âAaron, we arenât together anymore. You canât just show up like this. Thatâs not fair,â you reasoned, struggling to make eye contact with him.
---
Aaron Hotchner broke up with you about three weeks ago, just as you crested your one year anniversary. You were under the impression that everything was going very well. Aaron was smart, sensitive, and very kind. He had everything and then some.Â
Aaron, on the other hand, as dramatically came to light, was worried about how his work was affecting you and your relationship. He thought that his career was getting in the way of giving you what you really deserved, and that it was best if you called it quits. He assured you that he loved you, but that you could never be together.
You were blindsided and devastated.
You had been aware of his concern about how his work stressed your relationship, but you didnât know it would be cause for a breakup. And, you didnât personally think it was that big of an issue.Â
However, as always, when Aaron set his mind to something, there was no turning back. You two were doomed the second he decided it was over.
With that, it had been a messy three weeks; it wasnât exactly a clean break. Since you were both still in love, it was hard to stay away. There had been many late night texts and calls, but this was the first time that you had seen him since he broke up with you.Â
---
Now, it was 2:35 a.m., and he was on your doorstep, clearly fresh off the plane following a work trip. He looked like he hadnât slept in days.Â
âY/N, I know itâs not fair,â he started, shaking his head. âI canât help myself.â
Your heart broke even further to see him like this. Aaron was generally a man who showed no emotion. Tonight, he was visibly in shambles. Something must have happened on this past case that really got to him.
âI donât know,â you sighed, confused as to what to do. âYou chose this.â
You hated being difficult with him. You still loved him. You wanted him to need you. But, you also wanted to maintain your dignity. He made it very clear when he broke up with you that it was over.
âI just wanted to protect you. I want to give you everything, but, realistically, I canât,â he shook his head. âI really love my job. But, I also really love you.â
You both knew that there was nothing you wanted more than to welcome him in - Aaron was everything to you - which was exactly why you didnât know how to react. Aaron was a gentleman at his core; you trusted that he would never show up like this if he wasnât desperate.
âI just got back from a case. It was brutal, and it did not end well. I canât go home,â he implored. âI canât go home knowing that you arenât there.â
His eyes screamed for help. It was dark and cold, and he had driven directly to your house. You couldnât send him away.
âOkay, come in,â you gave in, moving out of the doorframe so that he could enter.
He audibly sighed a sigh of relief, picking up his bag from his side and entering the house.
As you shut the door behind him, all you could think about was how badly you wanted to comfort him. You still felt like Aaron deserved your love and support, even if he did break your heart. He only wanted whatâs best for you.Â
Knowing Aaron would never initiate contact, as he knew he was pushing his luck, you made the first move. As you latched on to his arm, he dropped his bag to the ground in response to the contact. You reached up to wrap your arms around his neck, and he responded in kind, strong arms embracing your middle.
His heart was beating almost out of his chest, and, so was yours. Part of you felt like you would never see him again, let alone feel him beneath you.
âI know I need to fix this,â he began, squeezing you tighter. âIt was so stupid to break up with you. I canât live without you. I promise Iâll make it up to you.â
You both stood there for a moment in each otherâs arms. Tears started to well in your eyes. You never imagined he would come back, and never ever under these circumstances.
âLetâs talk about it tomorrow,â you decided, pulling away to wipe the tears from your eyes. âCome to bed.â
Aaron instantly grabbed his bag. He took a moment to make sure the front door was locked and then quickly followed you up the steps to your bedroom.
You climbed into bed immediately, retreating to the left side like you always did when you shared a bed with Aaron.Â
He stopped in the doorframe. âYou know, I would understand if you wanted me to sleep in the guest room,â he suggested, voice tired, reaching to undo the knot of his tie.
Patting the empty side next to you, you replied, âGet changed and come to bed.â
A weight visibly lifted off his shoulders when you invited him in. He set his stuff down and prepared for bed, like he had done so many times before.
Your eyelids grew heavy. You rolled over just to rest your eyes until Aaron got into bed.Â
After a few minutes, you felt Aaron join you. He immediately found your waist, pulling you closer to him. He took a deep breath, releasing much of the stress he had built up over the past few days. His hand wandered through your hair, tucking the stray pieces behind your ear.Â
âThank you, sweetheart,â he said softly in your ear, placing a gentle kiss on your cheek. âI promise Iâm going to make this right.â
âPromise youâll never leave me again,â you mumbled, half asleep.
âI promise,â he obliged, lacing his fingers with yours as you both fell asleep.
