I'm Trying to Make Sense of Gerard Eilander and Failing Miserably.
He seems to be so much more connected to the rest of the lore than we all assumed, more connected than even seems reasonable.
I understand this entire post might look like some tin-foil-hat-worthy conspiracy, and it might as well be. The couple of points I detail below the cut are much more likely to amount to nothing than to compensate for the all nighter I’ve just pulled. However,
When it comes to Rusty Lake, the devil’s in the details. The developers are much, much smarter than we give them credit for. In this story, coincidences might not exist at all.
And everything that happens to Gerard is way too big of a coincidence.

Clocks and hearts: an extremely specific motif, pertaining, in every single game, to William Vanderboom. From Samsara Room to Roots, from Seasons to Case 23, you name it, we’ve only ever seen it be connected to him. Through this repetition, the series makes a point very clear: whenever there’s a heart, assume it’s William’s, and whenever there’s a clock, assume it’s his body hidden inside.
Why would this all change so suddenly when it comes to Paradise?
Enter Gerard. Enter the Boils plague, in which Gerard lays either bedridden or already dead and we must save his life to progress. For that, we must collect ingredients and follow a plague doctor’s instructions to make medicine; as well as, of course, trade Gerard’s heart in for a clock. The clock starts working off the heart, the body starts working off the clock and, aside from the catchy song in Locusts, it’s never mentioned again.
This is clearly unimportant to Paradise’s plot, this observation I dare call connection serves to fill no gap in existing theories or lore. Yet, I cannot, for the life of me, think of any reason why the devs would apply William’s heart and clock –such a specific, remarkable pattern– to such an insignificant character as Gerard.
To address the elephant in the room, I absolutely don’t think this implies Gerard is a member of the William-Laura chain of reincarnation. Besides the obvious –the fact that William is alive at the same time as Mr. Boar– their personalities/behaviors are wildly different and, given the very close relation the Eilanders share with each other, it simply doesn’t make sense to have Gerard be the only one reincarnating as a Vanderboom. We have, of course, very little content on Gerard, which makes it extremely hard to pursue any lead that might relate to him.
I am not sure, of course, this communion of the clock motif between William and Gerard can even be considered a lead. It does feel big, but it is never treated as such.
A severed ear: yet another iconic motif, popularized by pop-culture in the large rather than a pattern in this specific series. We have in CE:Arles a seemingly standalone game in which we play as Van Gogh, as he is driven mad by a corrupted soul. To advance, we must, of course, sever our left ear. In the entire series, the only other time we ever see an ear be cut is during the plague of the Flies, establishing a connection that may or may not be a big deal. At the same time that this is a very particular pattern –for among the Vanderboom’s ten sacrifices we don’t see a single ear– Gerard’s amputation is made, by far, way too little of a deal to assume anything. In CE:Arles, the ear is a major plot point, and we must use it to reflect deep into our mind; meanwhile, in Flies, the ear is only one of four items needed to make a carnivorous plant bloom.
The reincarnation theory is also off the table, since, once again, Van Gogh and Mr Boar are alive at the same time, and I don’t believe the developers would turn such a great historical figure into a character so intimately tied to their plot.
I cannot help but state I have no idea in which way they could be connected, and no idea as to why the developers would make them share such a specific aspect. But again, why the hell does Arles even exist on the first place?
