Gustave Courtois - Young Florentin playing with cats (1882)
Re-reading Perelandra in 2026 is a different experience than the first time. The first read was for “I dunno, Jack, I think your depiction of space exploration fans is unfairly negative” and the 2026 reading is for “I don’t know how you perfectly predicted the rise of the christo-facist tech bro, but thank you for writing a book where JRR Tolkien tells Peter Thiel that his theology is stupid and then beats him to death. This is what the culture needs right now”
love that this is the “I think we’re gonna have to kill this guy, Steven” entry in the Space Trilogy. but replace Garnet with god and Steven with a dangerously sleep-deprived JRR Tolkien who is also nude
Low electrolytes, so foot numbness from old injury is flaring up i guess because circulation will go if blood pressure or nutrition drop?

If you haven't lived around a specific type of Mexican or Italian or other generationally Catholic community I have no idea how to explain to people who haven't seen it like... Yes many of my peers are Catholic. No they are not Catholic. No I mean like they're VERY Catholic. No they're not even a LITTLE bit Catholic. Yes they do Catholic things. No they don't do any Catholic things. They're debilitatingly Catholic, yes. No, I don't think anyone could reasonably call them Catholic
"No I don't believe in God, no I don't believe in Heaven or Hell, that's ridiculous. I have no time for any of that. Church? On a Sunday? I get two days off a week and you want me to spend one of those days in a stuffy building and give away the money I spent five days earning? Ridiculous. Now please shut up so I can pray to the Virgin to give me the strength to not kill my coworker as well as to St. Cabrini so I can find a good parking spot behind the CVS tonight"
I remember when I moved to a predominantly white area for the first time and tried out the catholic church nearby for a vibe check, cause Mexican. Talking with a white catholic aquaintance afterwards like: not nearly enough statues of La Virgen, the wine was awful, where ia the iconography that slaps, what do you mean there's no guadalupanas here, no of course I'm not coming back next week I'm culturally catholic
I cannot stress enough that Mexican, Italian, and Irish catholicism are NOT white catholicism. White catholicism is so odd because it's the people who actually buy in instead of it being a historic space for communities predominantly lessered and shoved into working class to safely meet. When I said that I was culturally catholic that same aquaintance got genuinely angry and said that there's no such thing. Okay, then by your standards I'm not catholic. See you
Level 1: Asylums are scary because there's crazy people there.
Level 2: We shouldn't treat mental health facilities as objects of horror because it stigmatises mental illness.
Level 3: Asylums are scary because there's psychiatrists there.
Goddammit, is this another one of those things that I thought was bog-standard from being raised in a lefty household?
We always operated from the 3rd one: ongoing critique of major institutions and their mistreatments of the everyday person. Psychiatric institutions were institutions of abuse, and often used false accusations to place people there (who didn't fit into the demanded conservative political/social mold), for most of their history. Places of violence primarily. Beware.
You're telling me most people aren't automatically thinking of it that way? WTF?
Gonna be honest a lot of people deep down view cheating as worse than abuse which is why so many people view downright controlling and manipulative behavior in a relationship as 100% permissible so long as that behavior is centered around either preventing or discovering cheating.
#someone brought up a good point: cheating accusations are often used to abuse women too#sadly been through that and it scared me off relationships badly#Cheating is bad and is a betrayal but it doesnt warrant the abuse that toxic partners think is justified#When they suspect/knowingly falsely accuse you of it....
