‘Tis the Season | Spencer & Lowell

Lowell got on the train without any instruments. Okay, he still had his ocarina and his brand-new erhu that he was practicing with. But he’d left the majority of his instruments at home, and that spoke to his willingness to focus on the lights and the train ride. He wanted to be newly inspired for the mourning symphony he was working on for his guitar’s passing. He currently lacked any other musicians to cover most of the important parts, but he was working on that. Sort of. Maybe not a symphony. Maybe an elegy. A concert? A concept album? He just couldn’t find the right thing to express his loss.
Sitting in a darkened car, he felt inspiration come over him, and pulled out his bow, sliding it along the strings of the erhu, fingers stroking up and down the strings to make it sing. It sounded so mournful. He could almost believe it was crying. Closing his eyes, he played until he looked up and realized that Spencer was in the doorway. “Hey man. Sorry, was just doing a little composing. Did you wanna come in?”
Spencer headed to where he was supposed to be on the train, guided, of course. Even then, in the dark, he tripped over so many things. But mostly, he was glad to say, he remained upright. He went into the train car and grinned as he heard music and saw Lowell, shining the light from his phone across his friend’s face. “Bro!” he said happily. He hadn’t realized Low was coming to this. Spencer couldn’t wait, though. He heard there was going to be an ice rink. An ice rink!
He stepped inside, the toe of his shoes catching on the entryway and he pretty much fell into the seat beside Lowell. At least this time he’d managed to avoid his friend’s instrument. “It sounds good, dude. Sad, though,” he commented, kinda bummed he didn’t know more about music. It would be nice to give Lowell better feedback than his shitty vocabulary could muster up. “Is it about Gertrude?”
