Conceptual Goals:

I made my artwork for my girlfriend Samantha. The tootsie roll is based off of a nickname I have for Sam. I wanted to make the tootsie roll with fireworks in the background to represent the flavor tootsie rolls give and the spark that is my relationship.

Aesthetic Goals:

The pure green of the roll is to represent the lime flavor as green is my favorite tootsie roll flavor. The fireworks are all over as they pop as does the flavor. They are various colors because of different flavors. The various fireworks represent different memories with Samantha, each color being a different mood.

Course inspiration:

The lime green color inspired me from “The Secret Lives of Color”, as it is such a flavorful color. It worked out really well because green is my favorite flavor for tootsie roll. Lime green naturally has a sorta light playful color so by purposefully going light it appeared as the candy itself with its light undertone.

Conceptual Goals:

I wanted to create something based around an activity I love - playing music. I play saxophone in the jazz band so I wanted that to be the centerpiece of the work.

Aesthetic Goals:

I used acrylic paint to really get the shine of the saxophone and highlighted certain pieces silver accordingly. The background is to represent the chaotic nature of jazz. It can take a turn at any moment and I wanted to make it seem as if it was flailing about.

Course Inspiration:

Although the saxophone is the center of the image, I really wanted the flickers to represent the notes. No other color than red will create than bold but also lifelike imagery. The book mentions the diverse nature of red, how it can be so many things like blood, flowers, or love. Using that I did a slightly darker red to really create that impactful color.

“The word comes from the Latin ombra, meaning ‘shadow’” (pg. 250). Almost the perfect color for it because it is a dark brown undertone color. The book even refers to it as a “dark glaze”. Umber is one of the oldest known pigments used by humans, thought that was rather interesting as well.

Some of my favorite films which are discussed on this page incorporate electric blue to create this futuristic look. It discuss movies like Tron, Inception and WALL-E. It's interesting that as they are futuristic their is this sort of cleanliness to the color and so follows in a movie like Tron. Also a bit of a dichotomy there if we are to mention WALL-E as that world had become the opposite of clean.

Three things representing 2023 from my drawing are the watermelon because price of food has gone way up. I added Bonas because I graduate from bonavaneture this semester which will be 2023. Lastly I have a 21 at the center because I turned 21 in 2023.

Three things I added into my drawing were a Rocket ship because it would be awesome to go to space, a cybertruck because it would be cool to own and they are getting popular, lastly a mansion because who wouldn't want to live in some super house.

My process creating the collage was easy as I already had so many ideas for the prompts. I tried to not clutter my drawings and collages as I normally do. However upon finishing I noticed it looked a little empty so I added some background color according the surrounding images.

From “The Secret Lives of Color” page 162, Ceasar wore a colored toga of Tyrian purple. The association was “color with power and royalty”. They termed the color as a symbol of status due to its process of blooming gastropods in the Mediterranean. Not only is the process behind the ancient color fascinating, but also how the color purple came to be as significant as the color gold.

Activity 1 - Okay so the hair wasn't the best and the arms are a little funky but so is she! I drew my girlfriend Sam who has been one of my favorite people since I met her. Samantha is funny, kind and a truly unique person. She is such a beautiful person and although my drawing isn't the most accurate, I hope you can take my word for it.

From the secret lives of color, page 149, Rosso Corsa became the National racing color for Italy adopted by Enzo Ferrari. The story is really cool and almost strange to think about, in the year 1907 people driving across countries. Typically the only form of travel at this distance was by train.

For years I always wanted to go bungie jumping. I would see the videos on YouTube or instagram of people jumping and just barely brushing the water. I think the experience would be really cool but I’ve also seen a video where the cords snapped. So for that reason I will probably never go bungie jumping.

For my skull I drew the mark of the dark from Harry Potter. When I think of skulls I always think back to the Harry Potters movies when they show the insignia of Voldemort. Underneath that I drew the Deathly Hallows symbol because it has that same dark feeling. Surrounding the images there are the lightning bolt scares that Harry has on his forehead.

Leo’s corresponding animal is the Lion. Leo’s possess leadership abilities and incorporate Finka into their lifestyle.The color association is desert sand and orange. This is because the planet of Leo is the sun itself. The sun represents stability and loyalty. This is because it is guaranteed to rise the next day as Leo’s are guaranteed to be loyal.

An example of officers using the color pink for de-aggression, “… turned one of their holding cells pink to see if it would have an effect on their prisoners… before this, violence had been a whale of a problem… but over the next 156 days there wasn’t a single incident” (pg.118). Very interesting they were using color to change the temper of those detained. This seems like a great and subtle way to assist in behavioral correction.
