stephen is such a fun and delightful character and moreso having seen the movie first bc dont get me WRONG i love master and commander: the far side of the world (2003) starring russell crowe and paul bettany HOWEVER!!

he is MUCH MORE OF A LITTLE FREAK in the books!!! hes so weird!!! he has so many lil diva moments!!! which the film doesnt quite fully show (WHICH IS FINE) but meant that when i started reading the books its was like omg theres so much wrong w him!!! he has so much happening!!!!

#I LOVE THE MOVIE SO MUCH BUT HES SUCH A WEIRD FREAK IN THE BOOKS I LOVE HIM #and like yeah imo its a good decision to NOT have stephen spying in the movie bc it works well as a story thats almost single setting given #its almost entirely on board the surprise #and stephen having espionage wouldve been a diversion #but all the same. hes such a freak in the books!!!#i think as well like. i knew id always be a big aubrey fan bc like. yeah. and loved him in the movie #and I LIKED MOVIE STEPHEN TOO!!! just theres so much more to him in the books that i was like WHOAAA

also i find the reverse of the medals place in the wider series (ie book 11 out of 20, 21 if u include the unfinished one, basically bang in the middle) interesting bc like. jcak believes england is the best country in the world and the english justice system is great and he is innocent and THEREFORE there will be no problem yahoo!!

but obviously. that isnt the case. im so GLAD we didnt get his pov during the triala d just it as the aftermath bc the idea of him sitting in silence w his head bowed as he realises his idealised view is Not The Case was alsready so much...

like idk i just think its interesting that midway thru the series we get an event that idk challenges jacks idealised naive view of his country....
