It’s rare to feel happy in northern Gaza. But the other day, my sister Soso made me smile.

It’s not a lie that sugar is expensive. 1kg is $80. Frying oil is $70. That donut was expensive to make, even without the sugar. But it’s okay. Even if it means the adults can’t eat, it’s okay. Soso was happy for a few hours. She’s only 4 years old yet her life is already so hard. She’s not growing properly due to malnutrition and trauma. Her mental health is in shambles, not at all how a child should be. Since birth, two wars have come very close to killing her, so we just want her to be happy.

Please help me make her happy every day. A few days ago, she was the happiest child in the world because she ate an apple for the first time in a year. That won’t happen again because fruits are too expensive, but I swear, she explodes with joy when we buy vegetables too. She is a child with simple dreams.

shannon was definitely NOT thinking straight when she had fintan bring up humans as a problem at the peace summit in LODESTAR--when did she think sophie would have time to address the humans, or even figure out a possible solution? and even if it gets reintroduced later on, its been a plothole for basically, five books, including unlocked.

aaron, samheed, and will blair...im going to explode and die...samheed is a version of aaron who got saved and accepted who he was. will is a version of samheed who couldn't take the hand offered to help him back to his feet. the book itself says that aaron took the place that will feels he should've had just by birthright; he's will if he got away with hiding who he was. they were perfectly crafted to go hand in hand with each other it's fascinating...

also aaron's "im not a character in one of your scripts" line to samheed in quests...because yeah it would be so easy for samheed to be able to pick him apart and say they're different on some fundamental level so samheed doesn't have to acknowledge their similarities but it's never that simple...if aaron had been purged in samheed's place, if will blair hadn't been purged at all, if any other variation of events occurred, they all just take each others' places!!! they are the same thank you good night

so like. lani is so similar to aaron right. theyre both egotistical, theyre the smartest in the room and they KNOW it, all they want is to be wanted and appreciated and the center of attention all the time. right.

and obviously it comes from different places. lani is like this because she's intelligent and she grew up in one of the nicest houses in quill with a father who genuinely cared about her. aaron is like this because he's intelligent but he grew up in a necessary household, which he feels he needs to overcome--and he does, and that makes him even greater, in his eyes.

but like. put lani in aaron's place. she does the same things. put lani in will's place. she does the same things. she's not afraid to use that disguise spell, and you just know she'd feel cheated just the same way will did.

put her in samheed's place. with a friend, a loner, who looks at her like she's his ticket out of here. who doesn't really have anyone else besides her. after her father betrays her, too? lani would fall head over heels following will blair and you just KNOW it.

lani is a version of aaron who doesnt have that necessary background holding him up OR holding him back. she has everything given to her on a silver platter and she still wants more.

and, boy, was the world lucky that she got purged, because i think if she'd ended up wanted, SHE would've been the biggest villain in the series. sure, she doesn't have something to prove in the same way aaron does, but...

i actually wonder what wouldve happened if she HAD been chosen to be the head mage.

and i forgot to mention this thought that id originally hidden in the tags but like. lani and will were both set up to do AMAZING things. as the first book says, will feels he shouldve had aaron's position just based off of who his father was (and im sure samheed felt a similar way, being promised to be in the quillitary; but aaron's position? assistant secretary to the high priest? that's even greater, so will was expecting a LOT)--and im sure lani wouldve just as happily made it into that position, too, if she wasnt such a storyteller.

they both plot against the person who sent them here. will wants aaron dead and he's DOING something about it, and while lani doesnt plot and scheme to find a way into quill, she still reads up on lethal spells. there's a specific line where she deliberates on their use, and decides she wont use them--EXCEPT for on her father.

theyre both so focused on revenge aughghghg....even though they can maybe both acknowledge that they do belong here--will doesnt outright say he doesnt belong, samheed says he's good at theatre and acting, and lani never says she doesnt belong, in fact she takes it in stride, she's just upset about the fact that she got here so early--theyre still so hung up on the fact that they KNOW who put them here. will's just more upset about aaron taking his place (so he wants to take it back by literally taking aaron's place, interesting), while lani's mad that her father would send her away early, as if he couldnt stand one more minute around her.

oh and about the her and samheed thing. sure, he and will could relate to each other, they both got cheated by aaron, but there were still things will never told him. will didnt admit to wanting to kill aaron until the door was almost done. but lani...sure, lani hid things, like the fact that she killed justine, but she's not necessarily closed off. she'll admit to stuff if you get her talking. samheed doesnt have to worry about her hiding things from him.

but really the biggest piece of lani's character is the fact that she desperately wants to be someone's everything, she wants to be put on a pedestal, she wants to be paid attention to, she wants to be special. and so does aaron. and, with will wanting aaron's spot? ...so does will. and, really, so does samheed--and how better to do that than to be on stage?

I feel like sibling and platonic relationships don’t get talked enough, especially in relation to romantic relationships in fandoms.

Like cool, I love these ship, but can we PLEASE discuss the fact that Dean is the only person who has never lied to Lia? How he is the only person she will listen to, because he’s the only person she trusts? How Dean was the one person who prevented her from feeling trapped all the time? How Dean was the only person Lia ever let know and get close to the real her? How they were the only constants (besides Judd love him too) in each other’s lives for years in their childhood? The way he knows her and she knows him? She knows how to comfort him and distract him and get him to feel things and tried to help him with his father by looking through his father's file, ignoring her own feelings about it because she just wanted to help him only to find out that she can’t help. (Just think for a moment how she must have felt when she realized that. Because this genuinely breaks my heart.) The fact that they are intensely protective of each other, the way they have conversations without talking just by looking at each other, the way Dean trusts her and Lia trusts him, how they are literally siblings.

And this is going into kind of headcanon-y territory, but I like to believe that Dean didn’t ask Lia any questions about her past and waited for her to tell him herself, and refrained from profiling her (too much at least), and truly didn’t/doesn’t know anything about her past that she didn’t/doesn’t tell him. And how Dean told him things about his past he hadn’t told anyone before, not just to get her to trust him, but also because he trusted her. Just think for a moment please, how Lia, a girl who has been lied to and hurt and threatened and abused by every single person in her life, would feel about meeting someone who didn’t do any of that. Who never even lied to her, not once. For every lie she told him, Dean only ever told her the truth. Dean didn’t blame her for anything, for any part of what she went through. How confused she must have been, finding out that not everyone was like that. How hurt she must have been when she realized that what happened in her past, her childhood, was so much worse than she thought. Because before she thought that everyone was like that and it was normal, but meeting Dean who was entirely fundamentally different in every single way, showed her that it wasn’t. Think about how Dean must have felt, meeting a girl so defensive and closed off. How meeting her awakened a side of him he didn’t think he had, the side that felt and loved and trusted and the side that felt the inexplicable need to protect that girl.

And the fact that to protect her, Dean turns the attention on himself and his past, which he hates, just so Lia doesn’t have to face questions about her own past. Lia would go through hell for him, and he would do the same for her.

Think about how before, all of Lia’s love had essentially been very idk submissive almost, like how she followed her mother and what her mother told her. I think she truly believed at some point that her mother was safe to trust. And then, well, we all know what happened and how her mother is actually evil and— Anyway, after her mother, the only person she trusted in her childhood before, completely shattered and destroyed all senses of trust in others, she lets herself trust and love this boy who trusts and loves her. And this love is fierce and protective, infinitely intense and powerful. The kind of love that can destroy worlds and build new ones, defying all logic and all boundaries. The opposite of what her love had been previously. And think about how much she had to have trusted him to let herself love like that.

Also think about how hurt Lia must have been when Dean shut her out. She trusted him with her whole being, she loved him and she saw them as a unit regardless of what happened and what other people entered and left their lives. They would always be with each other. Dean had never shut her out before, and Dean shut her out too. That hurts my soul way too much for it to be healthy. (I am choosing to believe that they had a conversation afterwards and then they both proceeded to cry and it never happened again yay happy ending tbh considering writing that bc I don't think I will survive if it doesn't end happily like that)

And Dean!! He’s lived his entire life terrified of feeling, terrified of becoming his father. He was living in a house alone with Judd and profiling killers which definitely perpetuated his fear, and then here came this girl whom he could protect. A girl he wouldn’t let himself hurt, a girl he could help for once and not mess it all up. And he didn’t mess it up. He saw how hurt she was, and how little she was willing to admit the truth to. And in that, he saw someone he could understand. He saw someone who he could profile for a good reason, but only profile enough to be able to get her to trust him and not enough to violate her privacy and that trust. He let himself get close to someone for the first time in his life. And for the first time in his life, he wasn’t a monster. Lia didn’t see him as a monster.

Because of their past and childhood, Dean didn’t trust himself and Lia only trusted herself and no one else. But meeting and loving each other? It taught Dean he can trust himself not to hurt someone. And it taught Lia that she can trust someone who won’t hurt her.

Maybe it’s because of the amatocentric world being way too focused on romantic relationships, but why aren’t we talking about this more??
