"Atomics are just atomic weapons, nothing really sci-fi about them. Frank Herbert will create floating lightbulbs that do NOTHING but when it comes to one of the most powerful weapons in Dune's universe.... atomics will do? But they do end all life on Earth so the commentary will have to do."
"Yeah, Glow Globes are pretty stupid. walk into another room and your reading light is pretty much stuck banging against the wall. Also, why was this device created? Regular light bulbs were too old fashion? I dunno"
"Everyone's got a lasgun but the Sardaukar really make it seem like it's fun to shoot. In the movie they're not even aiming, they're just running around, looking like they're having a blast. Who wants to aim when you can just take in all the scenes Arrakis has to offer?"
"Yeah, I may be reaching the bottom of the barrel when it comes to the Dune technology that the first book mentions. I may have to go deeper into the series in order to keep it going.
Distrans... barely mentioned in the book. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about them:
'Steganographic device producing a temporary neural imprint on the nervous system of Chiroptera (bats) or birds. The creature's normal cry then carries the message imprint, which can be sorted from that carrier wave by another distrans'
So basically carrier pigeons plus the phrase 'neural implant'. Could it imprint sounds? Could I imprint a fart and then have it translated else where? I would be happy if a bat could carry my fart sound to someone......yup."
"These days no one really hears of poison use, seems pretty archaic, but in the feudal/political intrigue fueled universe of Dune people seem to be dropped this way a bit more. Enough that you might need a poison snooper, a small hand held device that simply tells you if there's poison in front of it.
This is funny if you read it with a stoner voice."
"THe Highliner is the massive space ship in Dune. Operated by the Spacing Guild, they are the only way to get around the universe. Steered by spice mutated humans, called navigators, that can see enough into the future to see a safe passage for them to fold space and basically teleport to another planet. While I was describing this to my girlfriend she pointed out that it sounds like some hippie crap. True enough."
Edit: tumblr resizes so if may be hard to read
"You wouldn't know it to look at it but this thing is meant to fly, with flapping wings! The Ornithopter is a personal flying vehicle in the Dune universe that stays aloft with wings that flap like a bird. The David Lynch model is basically a block. But I've seen some sweet versions that fans have drawn that are much more agile and delicate. These things seem freak'n sweet. I want grease lightning to take place in the dune universe and in the end they join maud'dib instead of fall in love"
"oh yeah, the Thumper. The device that calls the worm. Sand worms are attracted to rhythm and these are used by the Fremen, amongst others, to either take the worms attention away from something or to draw them to the surface so you can ride them! Pretty neat device. I've seen a couple of video games that use a thumper. Half-Life 2 comes to mind immediately."
"The internet is a cruel mistress. First, she's o.k. with what ever I put up. Then, THEN, she hates it and doesn't tell me why. CMYK color? I didn't know.
A day late, but that's only because tumblr decided that if I forgot to convert the image to RGB it would make it look like vomit and piss.
Any way, here's a drawing on the Weirding Module. A weapon in Dune that works with a sound that the controller makes. At times something called a 'killing word' is described as a sound/word the controller says that makes the module amplify it to create a killing shot (duh). The lab where this was created must have been a pretty tense place if anything you say could might wind up being deadly"

"Little late on this one but I'm gonna blame tumblr on that. It's making me mad but that's o.k.
So the other Dune drawing have been kinda a chore for me and I wanted to change that. This feels must more natural and enjoyable. Still have to figure out how to format it better so tumblr doesn't make it look crappy...."
"Oooh the Still Suit. Possibly the most iconic prop of Dune. A suit that takes all your excretions and filters them to give you back the water your losing being out in Arrakis. Poop water seems kinda harsh but this is f*****g Dune baby! where God trains the faithful and makes worms the size of canyons. These suits look awesome, one of the best props they made."
"I'm still trying to figure out how I want these things to look. Trying a very 'loose' style with no ink just pencil. we'll see though.
The Hunter Seeker is an assassins tool, a remote controlled hovering needle. It seems to have T-Rex syndrome though, where it can only see you if you move. Seems to be a fairly big catch. 'oh shit, a hunter seeker! Freeze!' assassination foiled"
D.a.D.
"The Water of Life is a drug that is made from the water used to drown a small Sand Worm... You know, the other day I was thinking about bread and how many steps came before we finally invented bread. First you have to harvest or at least collect wheat grain THEN you have to think to grind that up THEN you have to think to add water to it THEN you have to allow it to cultivate yeast and think that this new concoction is o.k. to consume THEN add heat? Man, that's a lot of trial and error just to get bread. Makes me wonder how Frank Herbert thought the Fremen came up with this find a baby monster and drown it stuff"
Here's a sweet deleted scene from the movie showing how they produce this junk: http://youtu.be/0ti2rs0Vbw4
D.a.D.
"The Maker Hook is a tool in Dune that is needed to ride a worm. Like peeing on jellyfish stings this is one of those 'who was the first one to try that?' kinda inventions. You would have to run up on on a creature that's hunting you, a creature that's truly massive, and jab it with a shovel and lift part of its scale then ride it. Gotta wonder"

Dune a Day
"I love all the detail stuff in sci fi/fantasy worlds, they just help fill and flesh out the universe they are in. Without them the world would be so much duller. The shield belt is a good example, I felt like it was a throw away idea at first but in later books it's expanded upon and makes the universe richer."
"That gun though, geez, David Lynch was just like 'well.... it's a gun right?' I'll never get that"
Dune a Day
"I'm still trying to figure out how I like these things to look. I new right away that just white/black/grey was gonna look boring and I was right. I have a plan for when these are finished but until then I have to post them as is. Here's a different color scheme I like better, we'll see if this sticks."
"Any way, Here's the Sapho juice used by the Mentats. Any description of this stuff just makes it sound like a energy drink. This makes me think that at one point Monster Energy Drink is gonna unlock some heavy shit and then we have a bunch of people drinking it and their minds processing thoughts at X1000. How many times in a second will the word "Dude" be thought?"
Dune a Day
"I've been having a lot of fun just looking up reference pictures and finding even more stuff to draw. I completely forgot that there was the signet ring, it was made a bigger deal in the book but the movie at the least had it."
You can't be the Kwisatz Haderach without your pinky ring.
