”some force users can touch an object and sense the history in it” literally fucking insane. Do you have any idea what this would do to like. Eight scientific fields. Forensics. Archaeology. Military strategy. You have an instant - albeit finicky - replay button for anything from a crime scene to a 2000-year-old artifact used for “””fertility rituals””” what do you MEAN. How the fuck are they functioning in the temple when every stone has the souls of a thousand years of fellow Jedi imprinted on them. Nobody let them touch a mando, those armor sets are passed down parent to child and only barely reforged to fit. Thats the equivalent of 12d10 psychic damage straight to the prefrontal cortex. What does it feel like for them to touch a painting an artist did of their child? Would they be able to sense the love between photographer and their spouse by touching a photo they took? I wonder if that’s a whole other art form in and of itself in the temple, where artists have to spend the entire duration of the creation process meditating on one specific thing so that another Force user can pick up on the undertones in the force as they see/hear/watch/touch/taste it. “It was made with love” is an actual practical necessity in Jedi temple cooking, because otherwise the food can cause anything from a shit mood to an allergic reaction in the more sensitive younglings and padawans especially. Teenage padawans eating food from outside the temple for the first time on missions and developing a taste for “angry” food or “drunk” food (ie the cook was angry/drunk when they made it) the way some kids who grew up eating beans and rice get really into ghost peppers and shit when they get older.
Might make 'buff women wearing dresses and rage" a miniseries at this point, im having a lot of fun experimenting with this style :>
process under cut!
ive been toying with new approaches, i usually dont shade first but its been making everything SO much easier for pieces like this one! after step 4 and rough colors I flattened the whole Karlach and painted on one layer only, until rendering at the very end. Made it very fun, and background is just messing around with layers until i am happy
Alien ships dropped from the sky in droves, always coming in at least pairs, but more often coming in 6s and 13s, never alone though. The Supers, The Martians, Hawkwoman, The Lanterns, and any other arial hero were trying to keep a good chunk of them in the sky, but even with the amount of them that there were they couldn't get everyone of the hundreds of them that poured in through multiple wormholes all over the states while also keeping an ear to the comms and providing support to three other countries who seemed to be having much of the same problem.
The ground heroes weren't fairing much better, as even the whole extended bat colony was starting to become winded with the sheer amount of seemingly unended opposition they seemed to be facing. The Flash family were split between running supplies, the heavily injured, and the potentially dead off the field and fighting their own share of the enemy. The Titans and Young Justice teams started to bodily throw each other at the enemy in what they called combo attacks between themselves to try and keep moral up.
Multiple militaries were providing aid without even batting an eye at the vigilantes they would so often try to arrest, or the heroes they so often tried to get the attention of.
At this point in the attack it had been three days, and the only sign that there was an end in sight was that increment by increment, the wormholes were being forced closed by various scientists and magic users around the world.
Phantom was a relatively new recruit to the justice league, having been heroing for a long time, but only recently turning 26 and graduating college with a PhD in astrophysics and other space science. He'd been helping the league for just under a year when the earth was once more assailed by aliens hoping to take their resources and enslave their people. In that year, he had proven himself invaluable, as the hardest thing to do, it seemed, was hit Phantom. At all.
He liked to exist in a near constant state of intangibility when he wasn't on the watchtower, and even then it was rare to be able to touch him. The league had never seen anything that could hit him on his own little plane of existence either, when his body shook like static and faded in and out of visibility like he would suddenly become like Deadman and disappear.
His near boundless energy and his constant puns helped to keep morale up all over the field as he zipped through as a black, white, and silver blur.
The green of his lasers and telekinesis lit the field up in bright neon danger as clumps of aliens went sailing through the air, only to be violently cut into the ground, or ran through with lasers. Occasionally the Superboys would use those alien balls like actual balls, Kon using his TTK to make groups of aliens into a sort of bat shape and hit the glowing green targets with, and Jon just straight up kicking them.
Ice coated the field as Captain Cold, Mr. Freeze, and Phantom stuck enemies to the ground for others or froze enemies solid where they stood. As more and more ice started to cover the field though, they could all tell that everyone was getting more and more tired. They needed something big to happen and they needed it soon.
A sudden cry of victory rang over the comms as the collective that was trying to close the holes started making more substantial progress, managing to close most of the ones not in the states. The states heroes looked up, hoping against hope that theirs would be next, but we're only met with dread as theirs seemed to get wider.
" There's some kind of interference, it's refusing to take the command. SOMETHING'S COMING THROUGH, BRACE FOR IMPACT."
Zatana called over the comms, making every hero tense in preparation as they saw a substantially larger object start to breach the hole. The soldiers around them dropped to the ground, falling like dominos and melting into piles of slop along the ground.
The ground heroes jumped back to avoid the goo, but it was permeating and rancid, with the unfortunate consistency of laundry detergent.
As the thing finally descended, there was suddenly nothing the heroes as a whole wanted to look at more than the ground.
" That was quite the entertainment, ye who walk the world of abundance, but unfortunately for you, there is little you could do against a god such as myself. Now, I intend to claim this place for my children, who have yet to be born but require quite the resource drain. I have determined this place to be optimal, as such, if you give it over without much more of a fight, I will alow you to die an only moderatley painful death."
Of course, not one of the heroes on the field or off was going to agree to this, but the being who had descended from the sky was near impossible to look at, only visible through the corner of your eye unless you wanted to start bleeding from said orifice. It's voice echoed and the dialect it spoke in change even between words, a constant chattering that never silenced even when it's many one never always how could you mouth was closed. If it had eyes, they all knew that trying to look into them was bad. Not a soul on the field could talk, but that seemed to matter little to the enemy being as it chortled and spoke again, answering much the same way one would answer a toddler.
" And what is it you could possibly do to stop me? Look at you, frozen with fear, worry, concern, dread, the surity that you will not survive today. I don't know why I bothered to ask such feeble beings to speak in my presence, as it is, your bodily clearly percive my superior visa-"
A mighty sound rang out through the field, stopping the being from talking and enabling the heroes to finally move as whatever hold the thing had on them was disrupted. They still couldn't properly look at it, but they could preserve it's current position and the origin of the sound.
The origin being the far smaller looking Phantom, fist still poised to go again as he once more closed in on the being and punched it, twice this time, in what he probably supposed was its face. The entity wobbled and became a little clearer with every hit, until it finally resembled something human, and able to be looked at for more than a second with the whole eye.
Unfortunately, this form also seemed to be where it had enough clarity of movement to finally catch Phantom, pinning his arms to his side and rendering him immobile. Superman tried to rush over to help, as did a few other flyers, but before they could reach, an immovable, impassable barrier stopped their paths. The entity looked to them, and with a voice like starts, ends, static, explosions, pain.
It spoke.
" I will deal with you later. For now," it turned back to Phantom, and in a much more cheerful tone, began to crow like the cat who caught the canary." I have been given a most wonderful surprise! Hello little fledgling King, where is your guardian? It shan't do to be out here all alone while you are still so fragile."
Hearing the being speak, as if to a child, to a person so strong as Phantom sent a chill down the spines of many on the field. Those who were listening with bated breath and all their attention though, wondered why such a being would be talking to Phantom in such a way though.
" Fragile? I am far from fragile you two faced, ugly ass, child of the most slimy depths."
And from the look on the existence's face, Phantom might have just insulted its mother.
The joyful expression and tone drained from its body as the existence gripped Phantom tighter, and they heard the snapping of armored plates under a black and white hoodie, the crunching of zippers on black parachute pants, the crushing of bones under white blue skin. It was like every sound from the barrier was amplified.
" Little divine one, you who would be a god, I was considering giving you back to your guardian, as there are so few of our kind of divine left, but I have decided that such a disrespectful progeny who has been left alone here, where the air barely contains the resources to sustain your growth, and with such an obviously on purpose drain must not want you. It should be fine if I relieve them of such a burden."
The existence clutched its hand tighter, and even though they knew Phantom only really breathed when he wanted to talk to them, they could all see him struggling for breath under such a tight grip. The Supers were hammering on the barrier trying to break it, and the JLD had arrived near the beginning of the existence's speech but they were having little success in disabling the monstrous construct.
They were afraid that this would be the end of such a bright young man when suddenly, the hand stopped. They knew there was no relaxing in the situation he was in, but the stopping of the hand did not seem to change Phantom's, instead making it worse, and as they watched the thing, being, existence Divine stretch its facsimile of a smile wide, bearing teeth that could not possibly exist, they redoubled their efforts.
No words were exchanged, but the whispered chatter always coming from somewhere around the Divine grew to a near deafening howl as it reached under Phantom's hoodie with one long claw and drew out an object that the whole Justice League had grown to be at least vaguely aware of.
It was a necklace Phantom never took off, even in battle. He kept it under his, currently shattered, armored plates, tucked as securely as he could get it under his hoodie. It was a sterling silver chain, which held two gold capped, silver twined stone like objects. They were near perfectly round with only a few dents here and there. One swirled a soft silver blue, with white pressed throughout, and the other was a bright orange, with gold flecks glittering in smooth circles, especially when rattled.
He whispered to those stones sometimes, and with the little flecks of gray that moved through both of them, the League assumed they were memorial stones. As the Divine spoke though, they were given a much more dreadful answer, to a question they never dared ask.
" Children, how wonderful! They seemed to have reverted though. Tut, Tut, to be so young and fail so hard, another reason to end you. I'll be taking these, they may live among my hoard!"
And as the being yanked those precious stones away from Phantom, the rest had to cover their ears as he wailed and wailed. They expected him to fight, and he did try and bite the Divine, but more than that, he teared up, and, at what must have been the top of his lungs, started yelling.
thank you to my personal idols James Cameron and Guillermo Del Toro for hating AI, creating iconic blue freaks, and teaching us to love the earth and all creatures big and small
