I feel like we as the PHM fandom are not utilizing the Humans are Space Orcs concept nearly enough. Grace is squishy and pathetic in comparison to Rocky sometimes, yes, that’s part of what makes their dynamic fun. But the potential is there for stuff about humans to scare the shit out of Eridians. Persistence predation. Ranged weaponry (only really works if you’ve got eyeballs :/) especially weapons like rifles or longbows. Agility and dexterity, stuff like parkour or acrobatics, swimming. The aggressive complex nature of our immune system and the intricacies of our biosphere. I also think it’d be kinda neat if Eridians didn’t have… like. A sense of rhythm? Or if they did, it took a Very long time to learn, and wasn’t nearly as complicated as human rhythms can be, simply because they don’t conceive of music linearly through time so much as they do vertically, with notes stacked atop one another, because of their five voices. So Grace asks for a drum set and Immediately whips out a level of rhythmic consistency and complexity that very few Eridian musicians can manage.

#IMO almost all Eridian music and speech is in an extremely loose 5/4 #If it has a set rhythm at all #molten rambles #project hail mary #Grace plays something in 7/4 perfectly in time and Rocky spends the next six weeks trying desperately to replicate it #Adrian has to ground him from singing in the house bc it’s keeping them up

Crack concept where, for some ungodly reason, the minds of the Project Hail Mary team (scientists, astronauts, and Carl) get sent back in time. The sending happens after the beetles have been launched but before they have been received by earth. The waking-up-into-their-past-selves happens the day before Dr. Stratt first approaches Dr. Grace.

None of them know the others have been sent back.

Dr. Stratt, who has been in emotional hell for over a decade due to being forced to betray the closest thing she has to a friend, decides to never shadow Dr. Grace's doorstep. He doesn't need to be involved this time. She has the knowledge and ability to save the world and keep him safe, now.

She gets the original team minus Grace back together. No one figures out anyone else is a time traveler because they are all hard believers in the butterfly effect and believe themselves to be causing all changes. (Sometimes being very smart circles right back around to being very stupid.)

No one else mentions bringing Dr. Grace on, because they all low-key suspect what happened last time and want to keep their friend (...he makes friends SO easily) safe.

This silence lasts until Grace breaks down their super classified front door being like "SEND ME TO SPACE NOW I SWEAR TO GOD" and everyone is like "I CAN VOUCH FOR HIM NO ONE KILL HIM" and "DO NOT SEND HIM TO SPACE" and "WAIT HOW DO YOU KNOW HIM."

And Dr. Stratt is like "I am so, deeply sorry for-"

And Dr. Grace is like "Put me back up there right the fudge now!"

And then a day later they get a scary transmission from space saying "Give us Ryland Grace and we'll return your sun to full luminescence."

And Grace's response is. :D

Worst experience on the planet: midway through an argument realizing that a: the shit you are upset about is 6 years old and is no longer occurring like it used to, b: the person you are angry with is as genuinely sorry for their failures as they are ever going to be capable of being, and c: you are angry at yourself for still being upset and traumatized, not angry at the actual situation, and you are making it everyone else’s problem.
