I make myself a list of things I won't let myself write about anymore,

a runner slashing her hamstring, a pianist breaking his hand -

but fuck it.

Run anyway. Play anyway. Let's crack open the vaults. Some days,

you would rather be remembered than remember it all.

Have you ever told anyone you stared at the casket

and couldn't imagine her inside? You couldn't bear the thought of

her skin, her eyes, her hair, turning to ash in that thing that wasn't her anymore.

You cut your wrist like a prayer to her,

sharing the only language you knew you could both speak.

ii.

Have you thought lately

about the first night you felt her heart beating through her chest

and knew that it wasn't for you?

You waited for her to come home,

and waited and waited and waited,

and when she got back you didn't dare to ask where she'd been

or whose smell that was this time.

Have you mentioned that you wished she'd just hit you instead,

so someone would see it, stop it all?

Do you remember how she wouldn't let you sleep, eat, talk, live -

and that you believed you deserved it?

That sometimes you still do?

Most of all,

do you still call all of this love?

Do you still believe in it?
