Plush Bats and Birds

Hinamatsuri: Barbara Gordon’s Plush Collection (New Earth)

Today (3 March) is Hinamatsuri (雛祭り Hina-matsuri), also called Doll’s Day or Girls’ Day, which is a special day in Japan. Platforms covered with a red carpet are used to display a set of ornamental dolls (雛人形 hina-ningyō) representing the Emperor, Empress, attendants, and musicians in traditional court dress of the Heian period. It is thought that these dolls are good luck charms and ward off evil spirits. It is customary to put these dolls away as soon as the festival is over – there is a superstition that if the dolls are left out a family will have trouble marrying off their daughters. So, on this day where dolls are revered, I thought a photoset of Barbara Gordon’s Plush Collection would be apropos. Although it was difficult to find some of these pictures, it was rather fun looking for them – like a scavenger hunt. Image Source:
