What is Collaborative Consumption?

Named by Time Magazine as one of 'Ten Ideas That Will Change The World', collaborative consumption is a new economic model based on sharing, rather than outright ownership. Our ability to cooperate and collaborate is a historical fact of our development: sharing is what society really means. Collaborative consumption is nevertheless, something new. It is a shift away from hyper-consumption and a returning realization that access is more important than ownership.

Consider, for example, your music collection. What you want is to be able to have the experience of hearing the song, the physical CD is inconsequential. With the internet, there are a myriad of ways to experience the song without owning it: Spotify, YouTube and Soundcloud being the most obvious examples. This explains how we have grown accustomed once more to value experience over ownership. Collaborative consumption is a widening and a deepening of this instance and its rise can be seen in almost every facet of our lives.

Car-sharing

As Rachel Botsman points out in her book, 'What's Mine Is Yours', car-sharing is one of the real success stories of this shift towards collaborative consumption. In a TED talk on the subject, she points out how in just eight years we have moved from car ownership, to car-sharing through companies like ZipCar, ride sharing through GoLoco, to peer-to-peer car sharing, executed in the real world but made possible through websites like RelayRides or DriveMyCar. Those with a car indicate when it is available to be driven by others, those who need to drive somewhere can rent it.

These online communities are made up of individuals spread out all over the world who are able to connect and trust one another enough online in order to decide to make 'real-world' choices, such as who can drive their car or sleep in their bed.

Collaborative consumption is both a cause and an effect of a radical alteration in the way we communicate with one another, the way we consume and the way we perceive consumption. It is not money-less, but neither it is value-free.

Collaborative consumption is an old means of cooperating, re-thought for the digital age. The term describes a new economic method of exchange, usually peer-to-peer and usually instigated online. The number and scope of platforms using the model has been growing over the last ten years or so and the idea now has a lot of traction, which is helping it to gain further momentum as an inevitable growth and change in our consumption paradigm. To understand why this will grow in 2014 it is important to understand what it is, some of its inherent problems and their potential solutions.

What Is It?

Collaborative consumption is a label which may be applied to many things, but what they have in common is they are based on exchange of goods or services from individual to individual, based on need and surplus. Biking in Miami and South Beach

Biking in Miami and South Beach is a great way to explore and enjoy Miami. Bikes are excellent to just cruise around as well as a great way to get some exercise in while you are on vacation. Commodore Trail

This trail in Coconut Grove is not only scenic, but takes you to some tourist destinations. It weaves through South Miami Avenue, Douglas Road and Bayshore Drive. In between all that you’ll pass by Alice Wainwright Park, Kennedy Park, Peacock Park, Barnacle Historic State Park, and the Museum of Science (Planetarium Vizcava Museum)

South Beach Cement Promenade

If you’re not looking for something hardcore like some of the trails above, think about heading to South Beach for a stroll. Its cement promenade is a wonderful place to ride around and soak up the charm atmosphere and atmosphere that is South Beach. Rickenbacker Causeway

San Diego River

A suggestion is to bike through town and follow it to Del Dios Highway and head towards Escondido. Complete your loop by going through the Elfin Forest Campground and the farmland area.

Cycling Safety: Biking Etiquette Explained

Proper biking etiquette ensures that all vehicles on public roads are safe and sound. It doesn’t matter if you are two wheels or not, cyclists have the same responsibilities and rights as car drivers. To ensure everyone’s safety, make sure you abide by your state and local laws. Here are some general guidelines you should follow to make sure that everyone is safe.

Be Well Equipped

Any responsible cyclist will ensure that they have the necessary equipment and that it works well. For example, bikes should be in excellent working condition. Make sure to check that your brakes and tires are in proper condition. If you can’t do this yourself, go ahead and get your local bike shop to help you. Other equipment that is equally necessary is lights (front and back), pedal reflectors, a helmet and reflective clothing. Extra points if you can coordinate it into matching outfits. Be Safe (and Predictable)

You could also argue that cyclists have to be even more alert because drivers may not notice bikes as well, particularly if you are in their blind spot. As long as you’re not going at crazy speeds, you should be able to watch your surroundings better in case of any mishaps. You also need to be aware of the weather just as much as cars do. After all, wet roads are just as bad for cars as it is for bikes.

Be Nice

The very words ‘biking etiquette’ should give you a pretty good clue that you need to be nice on the road. Sure, cyclists are more mobile than others driving with four wheels, but that doesn’t give you permission to be a jerk. Swerving in and out of traffic, cutting off cars, and not using turn signals is just not cool. Not being nice also can cause traffic accidents.
