Harley felt the earthquake while on his morning smoke. He was standing out in his side yard, confused at the sudden ground shaking underneath him. He had never experienced an earthquake before. It did scare him for a moment as he fumbled. The ground moving must have shaken him up that once it was over, he started to have a headache. It didn’t last long. The pain was quick to to go and he got a sense of clarity. The voices of static he usually heard were now coming through crisp and clear. As if the antenna in his head for hearing spirits had been moved to a clearer station. All this clear hearing was coming into too much very for him. Now all the spirts that hung around him were domineering. 

Harley needed to clear in his mind. Somewhere he could get some of his own thoughts through. The only place was the ocean. He found himself at the closest beach. To his relief there were very few people. He felt the calm noise of the ocean could drown out the voices. Harley stood there at the edge of the water. A small whisper, a voice Harley had not heard in years, telling not to turn around. Then he heard the singing. It was not coming from inside his head. Instantly ignoring the waring, Harley turned to see someone walking his way. “Hello?” He asked them. His eyes were now messing with him. He must have been staring out at the water for too long because around them was this fuzzy aura. “That is a lovely voice. But you must have me confused with someone else.” 

     maite's  head  tilted  and  listened  to  what  the  man  said  only  briefly  before  singing  again,  this  time  louder.  they  felt  themselves  become  more  vexed  as  the  melody  continued  to  be  ignored  by  him.  did  they  know  why?  no,  but  they  needed  him  to  listen,  to  do  what  they  willed.  they  began  circling  him.  as  their  song  finished,  maite  fronted  up  close  to  the  stranger  and  took  a  deep  sniff,  staring  deeply  into  harley's  eyes.  he  smelled...  wrong.  they  hissed.        "do  you  hear  my  sisters,  man  in  shadows?"

          the  rush  of  water  in  her  ears,  the  smell  of  salt  on  her  skin.  maite  had  done  her  very  best  at  distraction  after  the  strange  dream.  she  sat  at  her  piano  and  tried  to  play  but  the  call  of  the  coast  wouldn't  leave.  she  pressed  the  pedals  and  felt  sand  falter  under  her  feet,  she  pressed  the  ivory  keys  and  the  corresponding  string  plucked  as  they  should,  only  for  the  note  to  be  drowned  out  by  the  sound  of  wind  whooshing  by  her  head.  she  couldn't  take  it  anymore.  out  she  went,  the  sun  barely  rising  in  the  sky,  to  the  closest  shore  in  the  hope  the  sea  in  her  head  would  be  cancelled  out  by  the  real  thing  like  a  song  stuck  in  the  mind.  only  the  small  beach  wasn't  empty  as  it  usually  was;  the  small  inlet  of  water  barely  stretched  twenty  metres  either  way  with  one  path  in  and  the  same  out.  there  was  a  man  in  the  way  of  her  body  and  the  sea.  she  could  have  walked  around  him  but  she  felt  her  blood  boil  as  it  never  had  on  sight,  a  mix  of  hate  and  hunger.  maite  began  singing  as  she  approached,  her  voice  harmonising  with  itself  somehow...

linna   was   passing   by,   always   pausing   to   peer   in   the   windows   to   see   if   anything   caught   her   eye   or   could   be   up-cycled   into   wares   for   their   stall,   that   was   what   had   drawn   them   inside   on   this   day.      linna   had   done   particularly   well   over   the   weekend   market   stalls,   and   knew   she   had   a   fair   amount   of   work   to   do…   though   linna   relished   each   moment   of   creativity   for   her   little   business.      ❝oh,   thank-you   but   i   was   actually   wondering   about   the   boxes,   i   can   already   tell   that   any   of   this   would   be   more   than   out   of   my   budget…   though   they   are   very   nice,❞   linna   commented   with   a   friendly   smile,   asking   the   shop   assistant   for   a   smaller   box   (a   usual   for   them,   linna   always   returned   them   for   re-use)…   and   set   it   aside   so   she   could   box   up   her   own   selection   from   shopping.

"i'm  from  ayr,  about  an  hour  down  the  bruce  highway  from  townsville  but  it's  been  years.  it  feels  good  to  be  back.  what  gave  away  my  newbie  status?"

now that billie had FINALLY pulled herself away from the potters wheel — after apparently four hours of not moving — she rinsed the clay from her hands and under her nails, and THEN hunger had fully set in. she was ravenous; stomach growling petulantly.   she’d jumped on her bike, headed down into town and stopped by the chinese takeaway for her regular, put her order in the basket at the front of her bike and then headed off to find a grassy knoll with some sunlight for an impromptu solo picnic.    —- using her jumper as a min-blanket to set her fried rice and honey soy chicken out; it was actually pretty peaceful, the ambient sounds of people and animals and nature setting up a lovely and calming auditory backdrop.   when a crow swooped down, NOT her dear harbinger (he’s at home), but curious enough, she offered the bird a piece of carrot which it plucked from her fingers and then flew off with a great FLAP of wings and a small inky-black feather left behind,  she picked it up, tucking it in her dark curls with a smile on her lips.

  —- from out of her bag she pulled the knife, fork and spoon set that she kept on herself and reused to avoid waste —- and, when turning slightly to reach for her lemonade, she spied a face and gave a friendly, small, wave and smile; she still felt VERY new on the island, but was doing her best to integrate.

          sprawled  out  against  a  woollen  plaid  blanket  with  hands  woven  under  their  head  like  a  makeshift  pillow,  maite's  eyelids  rested  lightly  closed  behind  sunglasses.  they  stretched  their  feet  to  a  point  and  the  bottom  of  their  bare  toes  brushed  against  dewy  blades  of  grass.  there  was  a  scent  of  barbecue  in  the  air  as  people  took  to  the  land  again,  the  slightest  hint  of  blue  skies  dawning  an  end  to  the  winter  hibernation.  there  was  a  euphony  of  friends  and  families  chatting,  dogs  yapping  as  they  chased  after  thrown  tennis  balls.  the  hope  of  spring  fluttered  in  front  of  them  all  and,  for  the  first  time  in  a  long  time,  maite  felt  relaxed.

          an  unexpected  woosh  of  air  hit  their  toes  and  its  cold  tingle  made  them  sit  up  at  once,  fearing  one  of  the  roaming  pets  may  have  mistaken  their  toes  for  snacks.  maite  pushed  the  sunglasses  up  into  their  raven  waves  and  squinted.  a  bird.    they  watched  it  fly  away  before  bringing  their  attention  back  to  the  ground  and  seeing  someone  waving  a  few  strides  away.  maite  looked  over  their  shoulder  first,  checking  to  see  if  anyone  was  behind  them,  but  saw  no  one.  they  turned  back  and  decided  to  do  the  least  awkward  thing  and  wave  in  return.  better  than  pretending  they  didn't  see  when  it  was  obvious,  right?  if  the  stranger  came  over  and  realised  maite  didn't  know  who  they  were  when  they  should—  then  things  might  get  a  little  more  complicated.

an adaption of the 1995 novel of the same name, this introspective rom-com is a needed watch for any songwriter looking to dig in to their heartbreaks. maite first watched this film on the plane over to the states and fell in love with its relatability and loveable characters.

THE ANIMATION     ;     ᴇɴᴄᴀɴᴛᴏ⁽²⁰²¹⁾

does it need explained why this is a favourite film? iconic. an instant disney standard. the hispanic representation made maite feel seen and wish it had been out when they were a child. they know all the songs off by heart.

THE SOUNDTRACK      ;     ᴏʙʟɪᴠɪᴏɴ⁽²⁰¹³⁾

maite loves both the ost and featured songs in this film. the original music from anthony gonzalez (M83) and joseph trapanese is an incredibly cinematic, dramatic and enlightening experience. they love the use of electronically produced pieces rather than orchestral. the feature of a whiter shade of pale by procol harum and ramble on by led zeppelin is a nice counterpoint.

THE MODERN      ;     sᴏᴜɴᴅ ᴏғ ᴍᴇᴛᴀʟ⁽²⁰¹⁹⁾

a beautiful look into both the deaf community and the life of musical artists, this film had a profound effect on maite. after watching it they insisted on having sign language interpreters at their concerts from then on and began taking far better care of their hearing while performing.

     though maite had asked alex to come help with the donations about… an hour ago ? he only just saw his text after losing track of time being high as fuck and playing with his cat. he figured they’d be at the thrift store by now, so he raced on down there in his car and tried to salvage whatever time he could in helping them out. and low and behold, they there were — being mistaken for an employee here. he comes up from behind them, trapping them in a bear hug. “ i’m sorry i’m a shitty friend and i don’t look at my phone and you had to lug all this shit up here on your own. ” he immediately says, letting them out of his grasp so they can turn around to face him. “ do you accept my apology and perhaps an apology treat after this ? ”

          the  customer  began  to  walk  away  after  a  nod,  leaving  maite  to  go  back  to  folding  and  humming  to  themselves.  a  new  melody  had  been  playing  in  their  head  since  they  woke  up  and  they  were  tinkering  with  different  runs  of  the  notes.  suddenly  their  chest  was  being  squeezed  from  behind  and  they  let  out  an  unholy  squeak.  maite  turned  with  a  grin  to  face  alex,  a  white  t-shirt  still  in  hand.  "only  if  you  help  me  sort  through  this  mess  so  we  can  go  for  food  before  the  sun  sets,"  they  kicked  at  the  suitcase  at  their  feet—  still  a  third  full  with  a  jumble  of  disorganised  clothing.  "what's  it  been,  four,  five  years?  tell  me  everything."

open starter golden fleece thrift, afternoon

          they  had  brought  six  suitcases  of  clothes  with  them  to  australia.  at  the  time  of  packing,  maite  thought  it  wasn't  anywhere  near  enough,  knowing  they  would  be  staying  for  a  while  and  slightly  panicking  about  being  left  without  this  top  or  that  favourite  pair  of  socks.  now  a  month  deep  into  their  stay  on  the  island—  they  knew  it  was  too  much.  after  what  felt  like  a  solid  week  of  unpacking,  maite  found  themselves  running  out  of  space  to  store  it  all.  a  quick  google  search  turned  up  the  local  second-hand  store  and  off  they  went,  wheeling  a  suitcase  full  of  designer  gear  worth  god  knows  how  much.  after  a  few  quick  words  with  the  shop  assistant  on  shift  they  began  lifting  and  refolding  the  clothes  into  some  boxes  ready  for  pricing.  it  wasn't  long  before  a  customer  approached  asking  about  an  item  they  had  in  hand.  "sorry,  i  don't  work  here.  just  donating.  i'm  sure  if  you  ask  they  could  give  you  a  price  for  it."
