1. Why can I only choose pairings that have less than 50 stories dedicated to them?
Because at the time of writing this FAQ, there are currently 188,624 stories on Archive of our Own in the Supernatural Fandom, and over 166,000 are complete. However, when it comes to romantic pairings, there are always going to be a select few in every fandom that get a lot of attention. Our goal is to broaden the literature of this fandom by directing our attention to the pairings, canonical or not, who receive very little to no attention.
2. Do the characters who make up my pairing need to have interacted in the show?
Nope. Not necessary. They may not have ever shared a scene together or know the other one exists canonically.
You want to hook a time traveling Henry Winchester up with Donna Hascum? Please do. I would read the hell out of that.
Maybe you would prefer to write a high school AU where Rowena and Ruby fangirl over Lucifer before realizing he’s not worth it and that they’d rather be with each other.
Of course, you can always write a Benny resurrection fic where he finds his purpose by helping Jody co-parent the girls, finally letting him feel like he belongs.
Or you might want to focus on a canon couple, like Jesse and Cesar (who are only tagged in 24 works on Ao3).
And then there’s my personal favorite, Crowley and Garth. The possibilities are endless there.
3. How much of a popular pairing can I have in my story?
A popular pairing can have a supporting role in your story. The main focus needs to be on the characters that make up the rare pair and their journey though.
4. Can I write a crack fic over a pairing I feel is quite silly and submit it?
Yep. You can write any genre.
5. So I can write a tragic death fic?
6. What if my pairing has only 20 stories attached to it on Ao3 when I start my story, but then they become super popular due to unknown forces and they aren’t so rare anymore?
As long as they are rare when you sign up and state your pairing, you are still eligible to participate. It just means you were ahead of the times.
7. How are authors and artists matched up?
Artists will be able to choose from a list on a first come, first served basis. So once a story is chosen, it will no longer be available to be chosen. In the event that there is an uneven number of authors and artists, artists that volunteered to do more than one story will be asked if they can take another one on. Should there be more artists than authors, remaining artists will have the option (but not the obligation) to do a promo piece of a rare pair of their choice to be shared on the page.
8. How can I find a beta?
If you don’t have a beta you currently go to for work outside of the Supernatural Rare Pair Big Bang, there will be a document that contains volunteer betas’ names, contact info, preferences, and dislikes. If you find one that feels like a fit, you can contact them through Tumblr or their preferred method of communication.
9. Are polyamory relationships allowed to be the main ship in the SRPBB?
They can be, but please make sure that all of the characters would be considered a rair pair in whichever way you would connect them. For instance, Dean/Castiel/Missouri wouldn’t work since Dean/Castiel is a popular pairing. But Castiel/Ellen/Missouri would, since Castiel/Ellen, Castiel/Missouri, and Ellen/Missouri are all rare pairs.
