The Plankton and Sponge on the run movies werent that bad, neither was the new Pirates Ahoy movie
Are the retcons bad? Yes. Was also the moral kamp thing weird? Absolutely
But it made me happies and it gave me spongebob angst and actual nuance to his character multiple times including mostly accurate presentation, so I shall forgive and also I generally adore the movies even while knowing the not so good stuff
THIS IS THE SPONGEBOB HOT TAKE WHICH PEOPLE WILL PROBABLY HATE
Please don't attack me for this even if the fandom is largely squidbob fans, as I do try my best to think logically about my takes.
Its a long post so, everything is under the cut. Again, this is a hot takes account so a lot of things here will probably be not to your liking.
So.
With that said.
I do not think that Squidbob is a good ship, in both context of the show and sometimes the fandom-
Now, first of, I do not HATE Squidbob. I don't prefer it, but if people like it? Generally not my problem! Go have fun, even if I often see largely mischaravrized stuff just for the sake of shipping.
But I think it becomes such a gigantic issue if we go towards the modern show.
I think it has issues but I'm largely a supporter! I think the new seasons can have good episodes! Just....that I think that the Squidbob hinted moments and episodes are not helping with the mischaraerization of the characters.
The writers definitely, very often try to lean towards spongebob being 'flambodant', 'stalkerish' and even more flirty than ever- but I feel like they sometimes forget Spongebobs character for it.
Now, I do like the idea that spongebob Is a cross dresser and silly!!! He's allowed and I think it's a great part of his character to not be ashamed of himself!
But the writers completely forget to make him nuanced and level-headed as well, often for the sake of mischaracerizing him for 'sweet, shippy moment' with Squid.
Again, this wouldn't be a problem if it was ONLY a fandom thing. Fandom happens. I just ignore certain parts if I don't like it. Again, people do what they want.
But the fact that the show itself tries to let people who are SHIPPING SQUIDBOB handle some episodes, shows that they may not exactly understand both Spongebobs and squidwards character.
So often their personalities are mischaracerized just for the sake of a quick 'OOOO they are gay hahha aren't they don't look at us ignoring Sandy lmao look at the gays amirigjt."
This also isn't me saying the show doesn't have a lot of other issues as of rn.
Nostalgia bait, a lot of 'normalisation' or general mischaracterization outside of it and just a lot of general losses due to the state of the show.
But I think one of the larger problems as of rn is the writers not really caring for the characters as much as just letting their own opinions influence the show, EYPECIALLY the guy who keeps trying to kick out Sandy.
Want an example? Look no further than the games and some of the recent movies that come out, which are handled by some of the older writing teams.
A lot of times, you see more proper charaerization and no such moments, keeping everyone in character and making sure to keep in line not just what we know but giving fresh ideas with that universe.
I just worry that people do not care for the fact that there is heavy mischararization due to the fact that it's a popular gay ship. Especially if people take these moments as 'the ship being canon'.
Because of course you'll get these moments if the characters are constantly mischaracterized by the people writing it if they ship it as well.
And again, I do not say that all Squidbob content is bad. I see some good artists! It's just that most people seem to less care about spongebob and squidward as characters and more their current 'cute gay quirky ship of the week' they can not care to properly characterize.
Again. This is just an opinion. An opinion I do not see very often in this fandom.
Please don't send any threats. Just look away if ya don't like it as there may be more of this.
