Spongebob Squarepants began, in infancy, in 1989 as the Stephen Hillenburg comic "The Intertidal Zone." The comic featured a square sponge as the 'host'. In the later years of working on "Rocko's Modern Life," Hillenburg began redevelopment of the idea into an animated series; in 1996 he pitched the show to Nickelodeon. It featured a sponge named Spongeboy as the main character-- until it was discovered that the name was already pattented. SpongeBob was rechristened and began producing the aesthetically pleasing images we present today. The Hawaiian theme of the art was foreshadowed when Stephen Hillenburg wore a Hawaiian shirt and played Hawaiian music while pitching the series to Nickelodeon executives. So sit back and enjoy the simple tropical aesthetics of SpongeBob Title Art.
