The thing that really boils my potatoes about AI in general is that I have been a creative professional for over a decade now and the devil has ALWAYS been in the details. Big and small, I've had single-person businesses rip me to shreds over how their colors turned out on newsprint, and have worked with huge companies with THICK brand guidelines with every detail of their brand identity laid out and enforced with an iron fist.

But I guess all of that stuff doesn't matter anymore? Who gives a fuck if this AI generated baby has six fingers, that mom-and-pop shop is still going to use it. That rug from Temu says Happy Thanksgivirg? Oh well haha it's just a silly funny thing now (nevermind that you never would have given a B-grade item from a craft show the same consideration). I don't actually care that the AI Coca-cola ad has a truck that changes size every scene, but I can't help but think about how, if it had been some poor underpaid artist, they would have been laughed out of the building.

I don't really know how to put it in a succint way but it just feels all the more obvious how much more grace and flexibility has always been possible but never offered.

Spoilers for 28 years Later below...

I wanted to talk about something I found really interesting in 28 years later: the differences in Spike and Erik. If you look at the movie through the perspective of it being about a young boy's journey through war (war against the infected, war for survival, war against others who aren't infected, etc.) it really was interesting to see Spike interact with someone outside of the infected zone. Erik is going on and on about how he should have been a delivery driver, the internet, and speeding down streets in a truck throwing packages at doors, while Spike is like 'what are you even talking about right now? I don't understand half the things you're saying'. And I loved that. I loved it. It really highlighted the difference between someone who was born into the war and lived his entire life under this threat vs. someone who was thrown into from circumstances he couldn't control and then regrets even getting involved because, oh shit, he's suddenly in it now and wasn't prepared for that. Spike doesn't know what a phone is, and why would he? There's no power, there's no signal, phones don't provide any use to Spike. Spike has no concept of the internet and he probably never will--and again, what use does that knowledge serve him? And Erik is dumbfounded that Spike doesn't know any of this, because where Erik comes from these things are second nature. Erik can't shut up for two seconds about his life back home--his entire view is centered on what he's lost. While Spike (and I would argue this for the majority of the movie) is forward thinking, he has to help his mom, he has to find the Doctor, he has to keep moving. Spike can't afford the luxury of thinking about the past, and that never occurs to Erik who is consumed by it. Obviously, there is so much more to these scenes that my inarticulate ass can't put into words, but I just had to rant about it for a min because I found myself really liking that part.

I love how "Sinners" didn't villify the sinners in the movie. Sammie's father told him that playing music for "drunkards and philanderers who abandon their family responbilities to sweat all over each other" was a sin. And he was right about the kind of people going to the juke joint: Delta Slim is an alcoholic, and Pearline a cheater. It would have been easy to villify them, but the movie tells us that despite their flaws, they are humans worthy of love, respect and freedom.

Delta Slim drinks because he's traumatized by the horrors Black people of his time face. And he's kind and compassionate, encouraging and reassuring Sammie, and sacrificing himself to save everyone else.

Pearline literally saved Sammie's life and sacrificed herself to protect him, a boy she had only known for a day. It shows her kindness because she could have easily stayed back when Remmick tried to bite Sammy and not endangered her life more than necessary.

The movie shows us that preachers blindly condemning those sinners are wrong: Sammie is only alive because drunkards, philanderers and gangsters (Smoke) gave their lives to protect him. They are people, with flaws and qualities.

I love how nuanced the movie is: Sammie's father is not wrong about the kind of people Sammie wants to associate with and their potential bad influence, but he's wrong about them being evil and not deserving of respect.
