as someone with a degree in television and a background in cinematography and narrative analysis, i genuinely cannot understand what the duffers were doing with mike and will. the sheer amount of intentional groundwork poured into their dynamic wasn’t accidental, and wasn’t something you can dismiss as audience projection. it was craft. it was design. it was the kind of layered visual storytelling you only build when you’re setting up a payoff.
the costuming alone charted an emotional arc, colour palettes shifting in tandem, mirroring, contrasting, signalling internal states long before the characters verbalised anything. the blocking and framing consistently positioned them in ways that highlighted intimacy, tension, longing, and narrative centrality. the camera lingered on them with a specificity that, in television language, means something. you don’t shoot two characters like that unless you’re building toward a reveal or a culmination.
and then there’s the emotional architecture: years of subtext, coded longing, parallel arcs, mirrored traumas, narrative foreshadowing. every tool in the tv writer’s and cinematographer’s kit was pointing toward byler as a deliberate, slow burn queer storyline. it wasn’t just possible, it was textually supported by the show’s own visual grammar. even the pink sky in the field scene, that gorgeous, deliberate wash of colour, was doing thematic heavy lifting.
which is why the lack of follow through feels so jarring. from a craft perspective, it’s almost nonsensical. you don’t invest that much visual and emotional capital into a relationship you plan to abandon. from a storytelling perspective, it’s a structural rupture, a setup without a payoff, a thematic thread left dangling. and from a queer audience perspective, it’s heartbreaking, because this could have been monumental. byler had the potential to be an epic queer narrative with genuine depth, history, and emotional resonance. it could have been groundbreaking.
instead, it feels like all that potential was discarded at the last minute. years of careful build up rendered pointless. a beautifully constructed arc left unresolved. and i can’t make sense of it, not academically, not narratively, not emotionally. it just feels like such a waste of what could have been one of the most compelling queer storylines in mainstream genre television.

stop making forcefem/detransition jokes about transmasculine people im so serious
treating masculinity as some sort of unique oppressive force hurts trans people as a whole btw. masculinity ≠ the patriarchy. being or wanting to be masculine does not automatically make you an oppressor or a perpetrator of systemic violence bc masculinity itself is an inherently neutral trait
people say non-passing trans men get treated like defective women and that's true but so do passing trans men. you can look fully like a man with a beard, flat chest. even a phalloplasty and if one transphobic jerk in your life knows you are trans they will NEVER address you as a man even if you are indistinguishable from a cis man. you can look like a whole ass lumberjack and still get introduced as somebody's daughter. for most, the only way to be seen and acknowledged as a man is full and total stealth, keeping your trans identity a secret, cutting out anyone in you life that knows you used to be a woman. and that's not a good thing. we talk about pride as being fully and unabashedly ourselves, and there is no pride in hiding your trans identity and pretending to be cis just so you can have respect and be treated like a man
you are NOT a bad person for being trans masc
you are NOT a traitor for being trans masc
you are NOT a danger for being trans masc
you DESERVE love and support for who you are
you DESERVE a place in the world and to have a voice
you DESERVE respect and to be heard

Kpop demon hunters x Epic the musical
So I was listening (again) to the epic soundtrack and thinking about Huntrix as one does while eating. And thinking of who could play who...
While it might not always fit perfectly for some I'm pretty happy about it.
I feel like Rumi got Odysseus vibes, I don't really know how to explain it but its there.
And as the girls are bonded rescue I tried to figure out who they could be: the obvious answer was Polites and Eurycolus because they're Odysseus's friends. But like I didn't really liked it.
First of all mostly because Mira would never betray Rumi like Eurycolus did with the wind bag and their overall personality don't match.
As for Zoey as Polites, while the personalities are closer it still didn't felt satisfying. (And I also didn't wanted Zoey to die)
So I had a thought : Mira as Circee.
Like the whole "I'll attack first to protect myself" mindset is pretty fitting. (Not at all because I wanna hear Mira sing there are other ways to Rumi...)
And as for Zoey who, as we all agree, is a feral gremlin, I feel like Penelope would be a great match. Like remember she's Spartan and most importantly she is incredibly smart. That's a perfect match.
As for less thought out characters :
Jinu is a great fit for Eurycolus. He betrayed Rumi, just like Eurycolus did with Odysseus...
Celine is def Athena. This a Celine safe space, she did great damage but she was a grieving woman with intergenerational trauma. Plus the whole mentor dynamic is already there so it's perfect.
I don't really have any explanation for this one but Bobby as Telemachus, I just think it's funny.
Anyway if you made it this far thank you for indulging in my little pointless thoughts.
Me because twos company updated and now that the therapy arc is finishing we can go back to fluff
