Things I need in life.
My fox buddy is briefly reunited with his little buddy during my boyfriend's visit. It's been a good one.

When someone with a peanut allergy eats a peanut, their immune system tries to save them by literally killing them. Good job, evolution. Good job.
If you follow my tumblr, then you know of the first little dude up there. He’s my travel buddy who accompanies me around town on my regular cafe trips. I got him from IKEA as a set of two, a big fox (my travel buddy) and a small one whom I mailed to my fiancé in England.
Now, that second guy, the white dolphin, he’s a very old friend of mine. These days he lives on a shelf in my closet. I named him Flipper (from the old tv show which you are probably too young to remember). Among all the plushies I had on my bed when I was a kid (t’was a mighty pile of them) he was always my favourite. He would keep me company through the night, and we’d keep each other safe from scary dreams and whatever was hiding in the darkness. He would usually be wedged between my bed and the wall, and I’d sleep with one arm resting on him. Usually burying my head under my other plushies and my face pointing down through the space between the bed and the wall. That way I could breathe fresh air from underneath the bed while also staying hidden from the monsters of the night.
Flipper, sitting right there under my arm, with his face just below mine, would keep watch to make sure nothing scary would try to come at me from underneath the bed.
I gave my travel buddy a scarf. Just look at that happy little shit. Look at him.
Also, Icelandic liquorice is amazing and I wish that the world had informed me about this fact sooner.

Monster Mondays - Jörmungandr
Jörmangandr, the serpent - Full picture.
Jörmungandr is a serpent, born from Loki as one of his three children with Angrboda, and will be the subject of my very first Monster Monday! This interesting creature and the information on it from Norse mythology is brought to you with help from my Swedish partner.
The reason this creature fascinates me is due to his constant forboding presence as one of the markers of the Norse doomsday, Ragnarök. A sign of inevitability and the end times. Jörmungandr worried the gods with his aggressive nature and strength after Loki presented him to them. Their worry caused the gods to set Jörmungandr free into the ocean where it wouldn’t pose a direct threat. But within the ocean, the great serpent grew to a phenomenal size, encircling Midgård (known as the world of humans in Norse cosmology) and biting its own tail.
Before the events of Ragnarök where Thor was destined to fight Jörmungandr, he encountered the legendary serpent on a fishing trip with the giant Hymir. Worried about the dangers of meeting such a powerful beast, Hymir refused to offer Thor any bait. In his hubris, Thor decided to decapitate Hymir’s biggest ox and use the head as his lure. Attaching the ox head to a strong line and giant hook, he went fishing. This dangerous escapade proved successful as Thor pulled Jörmungandr from the sea. However, as Thor was reaching for his hammer, Mjolnir, to kill the serpent, Hymir, pale with fear, cut the line and let the serpent sink back into the water.
The events of Ragnarök involving Jörmangundr and his fated fight with Thor were unfortunately less lucky. Despite Thor being able to conquer the serpent that emerged from the sea to poison the sky, Thor’s resulting injuries caused him to walk no more than nine paces before collapsing dead, marking both a victory and tragic defeat for the gods.

I’m a horrible person… I’m sorry…
Today
Today I has been a good one. I had the day off and went to my favourite café, then I spent some time walking around town. It was sunny, but the air was nice and cool. I bought a hot dog from a cheery and talkative hot dog vendor. I also got a coconut drink and some blueberry pocky from a small Asian food shop. And I crossed a bridge which had loads of padlocks stuck to its railings, with the names of couples written on them.
But the best part was visiting my parents for dinner. My grandma was there, and I haven’t seen her for a long while since she lives way up north. I arrived before my two brothers, and I almost headed home when they did. But I changed my mind and stayed for the rest of the evening. I’m glad I did.
I had not met my grandma in person after coming out to my family about my boyfriend. She knew about our relationship already, and I knew that she’s okay with it. I just hadn’t gotten an opportunity to see her since she lives at the other end of the country.
I finally got to talk to her while being myself. My true self. I told her about my boyfriend and the times we’ve shared. She was genuinely happy to see me being happy with someone. Not once did she even bring up the subject of it being a homosexual relationship. She behaved as if it’s the most normal thing in the world. As it should be.
I have such an amazing family.
One thing about me.
I am an incredibly introverted person. I need a lot of alone time to feel at ease. The only exception being my boyfriend (now fiancé). He is the only person I feel comfortable being around 24/7, I simply cannot mentally and emotionally recharge in the same way with anyone else around. Even good friends, people I genuinely like.
My deeply introverted nature affects how I feel about different places. And while I may enjoy certain events that involve large crowds, they make me feel utterly drained after a while. I need to be alone afterwards to recover from the stress.
Now, this post is about a local café that I’ve stumbled across. I’ve started going there regularly ever since I discovered it. It’s a place which, counter-intuitively, relaxes me and washes away any stress I have. Despite being a public café.
Even though it’s in the middle of the city, it feels sort of hidden away. Built above street level and only accessible by some stone stairs. And the building itself is an old wooden house from the end of the 1800s. It feels more like a residential home than a café, and there are several small rooms with lots of nooks and crannies which offer some sensation of privacy even when the place is crowded.
Another thing I like about it is the type of people it attracts. There is a great deal of variety, from teenagers to the very elderly. But there’s something about them all that I can’t quite find the right words to describe. There’s just this friendly atmosphere combined with a respect of personal space which I rarely feel elsewhere.
It’s a place that makes me calm and happy.
Relax.
You are sitting on a grassy hill, watching the sun set. Its rays staining the clouds in shades of amber and red. You are feeling relaxed. The leaves in the trees are rustled by a mild breeze. You lean back, the grass feels cool. You breathe deeply. All of the muscles in your body start to relax. A warm and soft feeling spreads in your underwear. You have shat yourself.
Well done.
