a new law is about to be passed in Saudi Arabia that will allow the government to execute people for coming out or being openly gay online.

ignoring the fact that this is literally something out of some kind of dystopian novel, in the interests of safety i’ve emptied out my face tag and may temporarily deactivate or password protect this blog.

Happy birthday to Oscar Wilde’s lesbian niece, Dorothy Wilde! Dolly was born on the 11th of July 1895. She was a socialite known for her witty conversation, an ambulance driver in WWI, and the lover of writer Natalie Clifford Barney, speedboat racer Jo Carstairs, and many others.

She won that season too!  She’s so cool and upbeat

Despite being cool.and upbeat (and she is) she also suffers from anxiety and recently started speaking about it in social media. Instagram posta detailing her inability to even go downstairs and how support her fam are etc. She also recently did a bbc documentary about anxiety disorders.

Nadiya is also a perfect example of why diversity in media is important. A government report on community cohesion said she’s done “more for British-Muslim relations than 10 years of government policy”, because her presence on TV has helped to humanize the image of the hijab-wearing Muslim woman in the eyes of the public. She’s not even really a political activist or anything - she’s just a nice, honest, down-to-earth person. Sometimes that’s all it really takes to convince people.

Known as the godmother of rock and roll, Rosetta Tharpe had her first hit song in 1938 and continued to perform almost up until her death in 1973.  Her fame brought the music of her black, working-class gospel church to the world. Her sound - especially her distinctive guitar-playing - was a pioneering influence on men like Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and Chuck Berry.

Rosetta never spoke publicly about her sexuality, but friends remember that she was attracted to both women and men, and that she and her musical partner Marie Knight (pictured top left) were lovers.

Osh-Tisch was a batée born in the 19th-century Crow Nation. Batée is a uniquely Crow gender identity, describing a person assigned male at birth, who performs female as well as specifically batée social roles. Osh-Tisch was renowned for their skills as a craftsperson, their bravery in the 1876 Battle of the Rosebud, and as the best poker player in the region. In the face of attempts by the US government to force assimilation to Western ideas of gender, Osh-Tisch’s community fought for their right to express their identity.

Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca was born 122 years ago today. He was a part of what’s known as the Generation of ‘27, a group of avant-garde artists and writers which include the painter Salvador Dalí, with whom he had a close relationships. In 1936, Federico was arrested and killed - his body was never found, but it is believed he was murdered by Nationalist militia, possibly because of his anti-fascist socialist politics; or his known homosexuality. His work was censored until the 1950s, and it is only in recent decades that it has come to be widely known and appreciated.

Drag queen and activist Marsha P. Johnson was a well-known face in New York City’s Greenwich Village, where she lived on the street for many years. She is best remembered for her generosity and kindness, happily giving away her belongings, or spending her last two dollars on cookies to share around.

In 1970, along with fellow activist Sylvia Rivera, she founded STAR - the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries - which aimed to provide food, housing, legal aid, and other necessities to homeless trans youth, and worked alongside other revolutionary groups such as the Black Panthers.

Marsha was assigned male at birth, but described herself as living life as a woman, and worked tirelessly to support her trans community.

You know, friends, that I do not lie to you when I tell you I have walked into the palaces of kings and queens and into the houses of presidents.  And much more. But I could not walk into a hotel in America and get a cup of coffee, and that made me mad. …

So I did open my mouth, and you know I did scream … And when I screamed loud enough, they started to open that door just a little bit, and we all started to be able to squeeze through it. …

Now I am not going to stand in front of all of you today and take credit for what is happening now.  I cannot do that.  But I want to take credit for telling you how to do the same thing, and when you scream, friends, I know you will be heard.  And you will be heard now.

Bisexual performer Josephine Baker is known best for her career as a dancer, singer and actress. But she was also a life-member of the NAACP, travelling around the USA to campaign for civil rights.She spoke at the 1963 March on Washington (pictured). So I researched if there were notable Germans in the American Revolution and the person who basically built the foundation of the continental army was a prussian baron who was GAY and loved profanity. So naturally Washington made him chief of staff.
