New #1 but #2 will be back

Before the All Star break the Phils were unquestionably the best team in baseball. Since then, they've been a shell of themselves. Only the woeful White Sox have been worse. Bryce Harper, for example, has lost 30 points on his batting average mired in a deep slump. He broke out yesterday. Sign of things to come? The team is deep with a very good pitching staff. When you're losing 40 percent of games over a successful season slumps will happen.  Cleveland has been   MLB's version of steady Eddie. Best home record in the game. 4th in ERA and a timely hitting lineup has elevated them to the best winning percentage in baseball. It can no longer be ignored. They're for real. Will it last? There's enough to win the division…. enough for top seed in the playoffs? The Yankees and Orioles are dead even in the American League East. Both made key acquisitions before the trade deadline.  I like the Yankees one two punch of Judge and Soto. Who wouldn't? Can the rest of the lineup support the two superstars? Will the inconsistent starting pitching staff and bullpen return to early season success?? It must if they hope to overtake the O's. The Dodgers ravaged by injuries are getting key players back this month. Will they then finally play to their preseason hype and hold off the red-hot Padres and Diamondbacks? It all bodes well for baseball fans as the season heads to the final 50 games.

Time for a change???

While injuries play a part in all sports; in determining the survival of the fittest, there is an alarming trend of pitching injuries in MLB that is keeping General Managers and owners up at night.

Rational thinking would be that because major league rosters comprise roughly half the roster then percentage of total IL inhabitants by pitchers (both starters and relievers) should be in the 40-50 percent range.

Try 70 percent!!!

Staggering!! Just ask the Braves, Dodgers, Rays, and Orioles to name a few how their seasons have been hampered by injuries to key pitchers. Only one of the 30 teams has less than half of total IL casualties being pitchers. With the total IL count being 298 players, 204 being pitchers!!

Who will be the next innovative mind in a copycat league to question the current status favoring flame throwers vs. those that can pitch?? Tommy John surgery is now a rite of passage rather than an infrequent occurrence in a league where average velocity of pitches is 94mph vs. 90mph just 20 yrs ago. Time for a change in the direction of the game?? Definitely affirmative!!

MLB Leaders falter as races tighten. 

Baseballs old adage of it's a long season anything can happen rings true again in 2024 Only the Phils and Dodgers hold their comfortable leads in their respective Divisions. Houston has finally overtaken a mediocre Seattle team . Cleveland's once seemingly insurmountable lead has shrunk to 4 games over the Twinkies and red hot Kansas City. Baltimore and the Yankees have looked underwhelming as they remain1and 2 in the American League East, baseball's closest race. Boston couldn't take advantage after being swept by the Dodgers. In the National League Central the Cardinals and surprising Pirates have moved within shouting distance of the inconsistent Brewers. 

The Wild Card races remain tight with seven teams in the Senior Circuit within 4.5 games of each other. In the Junior Circuit Boston hasp fallen out being replaced by the surging Royals. 

With 60 games to go, who survives the marathon season. will be an exciting venture.

Are you serious??? Has he gone off his rocker??? Where's Cleveland, the Dodgers, Orioles and Yankees??? Since June1 these are the top 5 teams in baseball. Notice that only the Phils are the only current division leader mentioned playing good baseball since 6/1. Baltimore, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Seattle and the Dodgers have built enough equity to still lead their divisions, but the Yankees have fallen to a wild card position in the current standings. The Mets, Red Sox, Diamondbacks and Astros vaulted back into wild card contention with New York and Boston actually holding wild card positions if the season was to end today. Houston has climbed to within 1 game of the Mariners with their 7-week hot streak. It bodes well for a hotly contested second half of the season as MLB enters the All-Star break.
