Springtime Trio ~ New Arrival
A chill seemed to have brushed its hand against Snufkin’s face, which caused him to awaken right away. He slowly began to make out his surroundings and saw his two loves lying next to him sound asleep. Moomin and Snorkmaiden laid there quietly with only soft breathing heard from them. He smiled at how peaceful they looked and how lovely they were. He always loved looking at them, especially when he had them both so close to him.
Winter had already started but he wanted to stay just a little longer to make sure he left his loves peaceful and safe in hibernation. By the looks of them, they have gone into hibernation and would awaken again in the Spring. He chuckled at the thought of actually coming back early for Spring to sneak back into bed with them and have them awaken to see him as if he never left at all. It was a lovely idea but sometimes, he sadly admitted, he would miscalculate the first day of Spring and actually come late. Luckily for him, Snorkmaiden and especially Moomin would wait for him and trust him completely to come back and be with them once again.
He sighed at the thought of hugging them and kissing them again, but shook away the temptation to awaken them just to do that. Hibernation was important to them, after all, and he didn’t want to risk awakening them for the whole cold and bitter winter, even though Moomin has said that he has been waking up a bit more earlier than usual. Still, he thought it best to leave his loves to their wonderful dreams and quietly get ready for his trip. He’d make sure to leave the doors and windows tightly locked and ensure that his loves had an extra blanket to avoid any more chills creeping up on them. He quietly creeped out of the side of the bed (luckily he had stayed on the left side of the bed instead of the middle even though he liked being cuddled by Moomin and Snorkmaiden at the same time but still, this way was better to avoid waking them up).
Snufkin got his bag and checked to make sure everything was there. He then closed the windows tightly and found the extra blanket and covered them, happily knowing they’d be safe and warm now. He grabbed his usual clothing and decided it was now time to change and finally be on his way to where the sun would be shining on him again. As he went to pick up his clothes, he heard a sleepy voice say his name.
He quickly turned around to see it was Moomin.
“Oh I’m so sorry,” Snufkin began to apologize. “I didn’t want to wake you. I’m just getting ready to be off for the winter. It’s already starting to snow as you can see.” He looked to the direction of the window and saw that the snowflakes were still falling gently against the window.
Moomin looked at the window too and saw Snufkin was indeed correct. Winter was here. His hibernation and Snufkin’s journey were about to begin. It always left him a bit of heartache knowing Snufkin was to leave but he soon remembered Snorkmaiden was here with him to keep him company and remind him that Snufkin would be back like always.
“Winter,” Moomin began to speak as he rose a bit from the bed. “Time always seems to pass so quickly when I’m with both of you.” He looked at Snorkmaiden and saw that she was in her deep sleep now and still looked ever so beautiful. Snufkin could hear a hint of sadness in Moomin’s voice which made him feel a bit of heartache as well.
“Time will pass by quickly for winter as well. You’ll see. Snorkmaiden and you can keep each other company, be warm together, maybe even share the same dreams every so often and when Spring is here, the two of you can make me feel very welcomed when I finally come back like you two always do.” Snufkin smiled at that thought.
“Yes you are right,” he looked to Snufkin and smiled. “May I at least say goodbye to you before you are on your way?” Snufkin smiled back.
“Of course my dear wonderful Moomin.” Snufkin walked up close to Moomin, gently touched his face, and gave Moomin a kiss. He waited to separate since he wanted to make sure this kiss was a long one for Moomin to have in his memory throughout the whole winter. When he stopped, he looked into Moomin’s eyes. He could see the love Moomin has for him and it made him overjoyed. He looked at Snorkmaiden and gently grabbed onto her hand. He wished she was awake too so he could say goodbye in the same way but he had another idea to make sure she would know that he loved her just as much.
“Moomin, I’m going to give you another kiss but I need you to give it to Snorkmaiden when she awakes so she can know that she is in my thoughts as well.”
Moomin nodded his head. “Oh she knows Snufkin. She is the one that reminds me after all that you keep us in your mind and heart throughout your journey but, yes, a kiss would be a nice extra reminder for her.”
Snufkin chuckled and went in for another kiss. It was equally long and Snufkin held onto to Snorkmaiden’s hand hoping that maybe a bit of the love he felt for her now would be felt by her in her dreams. He separated from Moomin and smiled at him. He indeed felt lucky to have these two in his life. To not only make a goodbye more reassuring but also sweet and comforting for the days he would be without them and missing them.
“Goodbye, Moomin.” He said as he let go of Snorkmaiden’s hand and Moomin’s face. “Sleep well this winter. I’ll see you again in Spring.”
Moomin gave a soft yawn. “Goodbye Snufkin. Please be careful on your journey. And remember Snorkmaiden and I love you ever so much.”
“I know wonderful Moomin,” Snufkin watched as Moomin laid back down and cuddled close to Snorkmaiden while holding her hand and giving her a soft kiss on the head before finally closing his eyes and beginning his long sleep. “I love you two, too. Ever so much.”
When he noticed Moomin was indeed asleep he continued on with changing and once he was done, he put on his traveling bag, took one more look as his two loves sleeping soundly, smiled and closed the bedroom door.
As he walked downstairs to the entrance, he looked around the home seeing that the furniture was covered up for winter as it should be and everything was quiet and even starting to look gloomy. He remembered the times during spring and how much different it truly looked with the sun shining through the windows. But time did indeed past quickly and spring was over. Hopefully time would pass quickly for winter as well.
He exited the house and locked the door. He began walking the trail and looked back once more at the home his loves and him owned all together. Yes, this was his home and he would always be welcomed here.
He began walking again. Smiling at the thought of Snorkmaiden and Moomin waiting for him with the sun shining on all three of them and happily being in each other’s arms again. With that lovely thought still playing in his head, he smiled on his way out of Moominvalley.
