Artists! Sign up here. If you sign up and realize you can't or don't want to participate, that's fine. Simply do not submit an art draft for claiming and you will be dropped from the event! Sign-ups run through August 29th. Art drafts must be submitted before September 4th.

You will provide a minimum of one piece of art for the event.

Art must include at least one canon character or element from Squid Game. It does not need to include a character, art of the settings, costumes, symbolism, etc, is acceptable as well! Symbolic/abstract art should be recognizably related to the show, though.

Art can be SFW or NSFW

Art can include pretty much any dark or triggering themes you like, with the exception of explicit sex or violence involving minors.

You may submit multiple related pieces of art, these will be treated as one submission for claiming purposes (meaning each individual piece will not be put up for claims separately)

Authors! There is no separate signup for authors. You will provide all your details during the claims process.

You will create a written work(s) to accompany the art you claim

Minimum word count is 2500.

Any flavor of creative writing is acceptable, including narrative/fic, scene snippets, poetry, dialogue, food blog entry... go nuts!

(that said, since this is a fan community event with some level of collaboration built in, please talk to your artist about ratings and themes and be mindful of their preferences)

Anyone: you can sign up for email updates about this and future Squidbang events. (I promise I'm not sharing or selling anyone's e-mail addresses). You will have the option to unsubscribe at any time.

Everyone: Everyone is welcome here as long as you are respectful to the event itself and follow the rules. You are free to like and dislike certain ships, ship dynamics, etc. TBH you can hate me personally if you want, you can still participate as long as you follow the rules.

There is also a "blacklist" option where participants can name artists or authors they do not want to be paired with, if that is something that concerns you. If you provide this info, I will keep it confidential (obviously you'll just have to trust me on that since we're not signing NDAs or anything). I cannot PROMISE 100% that if you have a long list of hard No Thank Yous that you will be paired with someone, just because there aren't infinite participants, but I'll do my best!

Rules to participate:

Must be 18 or over, or have reached the age of majority in your country.

Please no generative AI use.

Absolutely no bullying or harassment associated with the works submitted to the bang or anything adjacent to the bang. Fandom beef keeps a wide berth at all times.

If you have concerns or suspicions about someone's behavior related to these rules, you may reach out to me directly and I will look into it. Airing it publicly or directly confronting that individual on social media will be considered a violation of rule #3

Artists, do you ever work on a piece of art and think about the possible worlds or moods or interpretations it could inspire? Writers, do you ever see a piece of art and find yourself imagining stories, dialogue, or even poetry, to go along with it?

If so, you may be interested in a Squid Game (freeform) Reverse Mini Bang!

Artists will submit an art draft along with an optional brief statement explaining “This is what’s happening here.” The drafts will then be posted anonymously for authors to claim.

After claiming, artists and authors will be paired, and the author will create a written work inspired by the art. The extent of collaboration is whatever you both are most comfortable with!

Because artists often have distinctive and recognizable styles, participants who are active in the fandom may be able to guess who created each piece, even though the drafts will be posted anonymously. Artists thinking about trying something new with your style? This may be a great time! However there's no need to try to "disguise" who you are!

The writing requirements for this reverse mini-bang are flexible! Submissions should be at least 2500 words and may include:

A complete "story" fic (with a beginning, middle, and end)

A scene or snippet

Dialogue or internal monologues

A collection of poetry, prose, or both

Another form of creative writing inspired by the artwork

When In-ho suggests a way for Gi-hun to be able to walk again, what is a man to do but agree, even though it may be with a little bit of convincing? Read on as all of this slides just into place, just like the plans In-ho wants to lay out. Gi-hun is just the Front man's perfect little race horse, now isn't he?

Do you plan to address any concerns about people using AI to create fics or art for the bang or future events?

hi anon. no.

Haha just kidding. I have a few things to say I guess. Use of generative ai for the fic/art created for the squidbang is against the rules. Up until quite recently, there wasn't really a way to 100% definitively prove that someone did use it, and even now there's just one small way that would catch a small percentage of ai fic, so this is basically an honor system rule (similar to the 18 and over rule-- like i'm not checking IDs.)

If there was irrefutable evidence or admittance of ai usage in a work, it would be removed from the bang, which I guess would mean removing it from the ao3 collection and removing posts/rbs here about it. But that seems like an unlikely thing to happen. Beyond that, there's not much else to do.

I will add just a precautionary reminder as well that everyone who signed up via the google form checked yes next to "You agree that you will NOT publicly or directly bully, harass, shame, critique, or otherwise interact negatively with any works posted as part of the SGBB."

(I truly don't think anyone would do this, because even though there are likely to be participants with differing opinions or levels of outrage, i believe deep down everyone is kind and capable of extending grace to those they disagree with on this topic. I believe this mostly because I am a reluctant optimist. But also because Lee Jung-jae himself did a fucking commercial for a gen ai search engine and everyone still adores him. so.)

I do have some thoughts on the recent discoveries and discussions, that I will probably share when I rb this to my fandom blog, but as far as the bang goes, that's all I got!

Finally our turn!

Here's my mini bag art piece for the @squidbang event! Based in the fantastic fic of @nerdyhuntress! Go give it some love! (Mind the tags too!)

I really wanted to do something that could blend the myth and art, keeping the Squid Game essence. For that I kicked my own ass to make Inho's mask and added the always recognizable squares, triangles and circles as a final detail.
