Wrote this on lunch for Vegas AU because this scene wouldn't leave me alone, but how I imagine canon inhun's reunion going. :')
"Expecting someone else?"
The silence that followed was deafening, but nothing was quite so loud as the sound of Gi-hun's heart breaking all over again.
He should have left, walked out of there and never looked back, but he never did know when to stop chasing after him, did he?
He should have gotten on that plane.
Just as he should have walked right out the door.
Gi-hun never learned, apparently.
Through the sting of unshed tears, Gi-hun stared at In-ho from where he stood on the opposite side of the bed, his hands clenched into fists, trembling at his sides.
Compared to recent days, where the In-ho he spent time with had been quicker to laugh and smile, it gave him whiplash to be met once again with the cold, distant formality of his own. Dark eyes remained fixated on him, his lips parted.
"Welcome ba—"
"Don't," Gi-hun bit out, his lower lip wobbling as he sucked in a sharp breath. In-ho averted his gaze, swallowing thickly under the intensity of Gi-hun's scrutiny. "Just don't."
"I don't know what you want me to say."
"How about you show a bit of remorse for once in your life?" Gi-hun suggested, his voice growing louder by the second. "How about, 'Hey, Gi-hun, I'm sorry for not only hurting you over and over again, but also for letting you down one last fucking time'?" He covered his mouth when his voice cracked. "That would be a good place to start, don't you think?!"
"I'm sorry," In-ho whispered. He took a deep breath in, then slowly let it out, forcing himself to meet Gi-hun's eyes again. "I'm so sorry."
Even then, Gi-hun barked out a hysterical laugh, shaking his head at him.
"Now ask yourself, why is that? Why is it so easy for you to say it now, of all times, hm?" Gi-hun cocked his head to the side, the tears flowing freely down his cheeks. "Is it because you got a taste of what could have been? Is that it?" An anguished rage burned like fire in his eyes while he rounded the bed to get to him, patting his hand against his chest. "Why was I not enough, In-ho, or should I say Young-il?" He scoffed, throwing his hands up in frustration. "Because I never even got a proper introduction to who you are."
In-ho held his head high, taking everything Gi-hun dished out at him. All the hurt, the anger, the hatred.
"I'm sorry," he repeated, slow and even, because what else could he say?
Gi-hun gritted his teeth, his brows pinched together.
"You know what I despised the most about that place? Our 'happily ever after', and it all depended on me saving you." Gi-hun jabbed his finger into In-ho's chest. "Right place, right time, my ass, because it all has to revolve around you, doesn't it?! You suffer, and the whole world burns for it. Well, what about me, In-ho? What did I do to deserve this tragedy?! I saved you, a complete stranger, in another universe, but in this world where you know me inside and out, better than anyone else, you couldn't even be bothered to, you didn't even—"
Gasping for air, Gi-hun's legs buckled, and he collapsed onto the floor before In-ho could react, doubled over while he clutched at his chest in pain.
"Why didn't you save me?" he wept. "Why didn't you care?" Exhausted, he trailed off, the shattered remains of the man he used to be spread out on the floor.
In time, In-ho lowered himself down onto knees before him, his eyes red and puffy.
And from there, he picked up the broken pieces.
