boy have I got some headcanons about that!! sorry it took me a while, I was just heading to bed when I got your message and then I had to go to school :0

Squidward’s attempt at a first real date would probably be very squidward, like an art gallery or a fancy dinner or an orchestra concert

he knows spongebob isn’t really into that stuff but squidward’s nervous and wants to impress him so he kind of falls back on his artsy, kind of snobbish side

they go to the premiere of a brand new art show, and it turns out that the artist does mostly colorful and surreal stuff including paintings and a few sculptures

spongebob is super fascinated with it, and hauls squidward around by his hand (squidward is trying not to focus too hard on the fact that they’re holding hands) and asks him a million questions about the art

squidward gets to show off his skill by telling spongebob about the technique the artist used and the symbolism and spongebob listens to every. word. because squidward is smiling so wide and is so smart

they spend three hours at the gallery, only leaving after they’ve seen every piece

spongebob mentions that he wishes he could make cool stuff like that, and squidward mentions that he has art supplies. they go to his house from the show

spongebob’s first painting is messy and has very little rhyme or reason. it’s also colorful, expressive, and unrestrained, just like spongebob himself. squidward lets spongebob leave with the painting, but only after promising to come back soon and paint one for squidward to hang up.

I…might have to turn this into an actual fic…
