Zuko Character Analysis (update)
Was emotionally abused by his father his whole life.
Was constantly compared to his sister generally putting him as lesser and fostering an underlying fight between them.
Azula was abusive towards him, though this wasn’t necessarily her fault she was also used as a pawn in their fathers game. However, it doesn’t change the fact she was cruel, a liar, and violent towards her brother.
Was a mediocore to poor firebender.
He was basically abandoned by his mother. This was complicated as he wasn’t sure what happened to his mother. (The reason his mother left was very convoluted but the psychological damage still happend)
He learns that his father might have been willing to kill him.
He was emotionally traumatized by his father killing his grandfather and the manipulation and intimidation around this
His father attacked him for talking out of turn physically scaring him for life. He was then banished from his home and country because he would not fight back.
Is taught that display of compassion, mercy and human grief are weak.
He had to live running from place to place being told the only way his father would love him is by doing a task thought impossible.
Learned very good bendingless fight skills.
Was raised by his Uncle in his teen years after the attack. His uncle tuaght him a more wholestic view as well as applying a better trainging method.
Zuko has an extreme obsession with the concept of honour.
Betrayed his uncle in search of honour and to be allowed home.
Turned away from his upbringing and confronted his father, but in this fight continued to not seek retribution and spared his fathers life even under iminate attack.
joined and helped the Avatar take down the regime of his youth.
A lot of his character devlopments are punctuated by three very visible identity crisises.
When he becomes the blue spirit and abandoned his uncle. We know he does care for him as one of the first things he think to buy is a teapot, he is devastated when he is hurt. but he doesn’t know who to be if he isn’t the prince so he takes up the identity of the blue spirit, and becomes a different person. Litteraly masking himself with an alter ego.
After he saves Appa. This is the clearest cut one. he has nightmares and gets physically ill from the stress he is going through. This is brought on by an extremely impactful reconning with which side of his nature he wants to act on.
Basically the first ¾ of the third book is a continous struggle. He struggles to reconcile everything he learned throughout the first two books. The ideas of honour his uncle has, the fact that the earth kingdom people are kind and brave, the effects the fire nation had on innocents vs his desperation to be loved by his family and to be the ideal of his culture but he has been utterly changed. This culminates in his major character moment in challenging his father.
Zuko feels a need to please people because he was never valued by his father. He has an unending need to capture the Avatar because it will please his father. When he feels this is impossible he falls in on himself (Zuko alone). When he changes sides he feels the need to make all gaang to like him not just let him be there. This results in the “life changing feild trips” where his own experinces allow him to help the others.
Zuko has Self-Destructive tendencies. He gets in fights he isn’t sure he can win with Zhao and Azula and otherwise puts himself in unnecessary phsycial danger danger. He also subjects himseo to emotional situations that he knows will hurt him. He has little skill to handel his emotions or direct his energy and ambition destructing tends to be his outlit. Self-destructing also is an outlit for his own self-hate.
Honour is an important concept within the culture of the fire nation. But Zuko has an over-attachment to this idea to the point that people feel the need to comment on it (Namely Azula & Iroh). He fixates on this idea because it was drilled into him it was the most important but he feels he lacks it and overcompensates. It becomes a fixation and a way in wich to search for meaning he is lacking and a way to justify his self esteem issues and anger.
He has a tendency to be very dramatic in general and have extreme reactions. This is generally a reaction to a perceived slight against his ego, rejection or insults. I believe like the dangerous streak he deals with the emotional scars he was never taught to process his emotions and his self-image is completely shattered by being banished.
His struggles with pretty intense Trust Issues. This is shown by the fact he denies help from most people and doesn’t believe they want to help him. This is born from the fact that most people he grew up with were duplicitous.
Shame is a prominent characteristic of Zuko’s character. This is pointed out by uncle Iroh in Bitter Work. This comes I think from the lack of emotional support.
Through his exposure to the earth kingdom, seeinf first hand devstation of the war and spiritual teaching from Iroh Zuko is able to reconcile his innate compassion and the love he did see from his mother as a kid with his belife in honour and strength. He learns a strength born from humility, love and family.

Splitting: Most present in his relationship with his uncle. they are close one second then Zuko gets emotional and cuts contact/gets angry with him.
Inconsistent identity: We see this primarly in the identity crisis moments, but also in just his inrocnicble ideas of who and what he should be, grabbing on to concepts foreced upon him.
Affect issues: His reactions to things are generally disproportionate to the situation.
Emotional dysregulation: This ties into the “dramatic” thing I talked about before. He can’t regulate or process his emotions. This causes him to never be capable of handling what people throw at him until he learns to deal with his emotions.
Chronic feelings of emptiness: He is always trying to fill the void by holding on to the idea of a prince.
Recklessness: evident in offten acting out, picking fights he can’t win. We see he attempt to get hit by lightning and puts himslef out in the cold where he nearly freezes to death.
inappropriate anger: This should be self-evident
Unstable relationships: This is most prominent with Mai. He feels inadequate and frustrated and is unable to keep his relationship happy even though it is very evident that they are very much in love.
