World Ocean Day
Welcome back!
I know it's been a while, but we are getting ready to ramp this back up. So I hope you come back to see us. All three of us have had big changes over the last year with our careers so we are very excited to share what we have all been working on.
Today is World Ocean Day. And for many of us, that may not mean a whole lot. But it gives us a chance to reflect on the health of the ocean and more importantly, to focus on the future of this life sustaining part of our world. Many times we seem to forget the role that the ocean plays in our lives. It may only be evident when we take that semi annual trip to the shore. Or maybe when we get that sticker shock at the price of a pound of gulf shrimp (now including 200 million year old hydrocarbons). But on this World Ocean Day (which happens to be the 1 year birthday of Squidink), I want to share with you just two simple thoughts and things to think about so that we can continue to see a healthy an improving ocean for many generations. Not to much science today, just a little overview of some of the major threats facing the ocean today and what can be done.
Plastics, Plastics, Plastics
Now that summer is here and people are beginning their summer beach trips, I have seem more and more of my friends post picture of grilled redfish, snapper, and the basket of fried shrimp. But what you couldn't see was the tiny bits of plastic that have inevitably entered into the fish. It's unlikely that a fish, say red snapper, is going around ingesting little bits of plastic. But what is happening is that the snapper is eating it's prey, which could have fed on plankton that is about the size of a piece of plastic that are likely to be present. Whenever a plastic grocery bag or candy wrapper makes its way to the ocean, it breaks down into tinier and tinier pieces, but never biodegrades, meaning it could be ingested with the plankton from some of the lower trophic level species.
This, like many other chemicals (including Mercury, PCBs, and insecticides) go through a process called bio-magnification, meaning they concentrate in higher level species. These fish are the ones we like to eat, grouper, snapper, mackerel. So what we are seeing is more and more fish on our plate with more and more plastic inside. Some estimates are that one in every three fish captured contains plastic in it's system.
This problem isn't going away any time soon. Like I mentioned before, plastic doesn't biodegrade. So what can we do? We need to limit the amount of plastic that enters the system. I know it seems simple, but there is no other real good options. Properly disposing of the plastic that we do use, but better still? NOT using plastic at all. One of the largest amounts of pollution in both the ocean and on our beaches, is the plastic grocery bag. GO re-usable!!! It's one of the easiest things we can do for the ocean and our planet. There really is no need to have plastic bags in grocery stores.
CO2 and Dissolving Coral Reefs
If you were not aware, the global CO2 atmospheric hit 400 ppm recently. That means that carbon dioxide concentrations are higher than at any any time in human history. And when most people think of the effects that this has on the planet, the first thing that comes to mind is climate change or global warming. However, there is another cahnge that the large amount of CO2 is causing, one that we are seeing right now.
This, simply put, is the acidification of our oceans. Now, when I teach this to my students, I go into great detail and use lots of dry board space. So here is a simple illustration that explains it.

Long story short, the more CO2 in the atmosphere, the more acidic the ocean. So what are the implications? Like many other things, it all comes down to food. Food supply! many of the things that we like to eat like shrimp, lobster, and crab, have a calcium carbonate shell. This gets dissolved in an increasing acidic ocean. Like the shellfish, corals also deposit a base that is dissolved by an acidic ocean. And though we do not eat the coral directly, they form the foundation for habitat for the many things we do eat. Also hampered by an acidic ocean, are plankton, which have the same exoskeleton that many crustaceans have. Just like above, these are important in moving energy through the food web. Without this layer, the higher levels of finfish and other important species will not be able to sustain their populations. Leaving a broken and nonfunctional ecosystem.
What can we do? Well just like plastics we have to reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. The ways to do this are simple enough, but socially hard to enact. Public transportation, biking, lower emission vehicles, renewable energy, buy local produce, and eating lower on the food chain are ways that we can reduce our emissions of carbon dioxide.
To wrap up, we have to realize the importance of a healthy ocean. This goes beyond having a trash free beach and surf zone. Or believing that as we don't have oil spills the ocean is healthy. We have to see that if the ocean begins to fail, then we will see many hardships for many people. One third of the world's population depends on fish as their primary protein. 80% of worldwide tourism is directed to the coast. All of these depend directly or indirectly on a healthy ocean. What we have been entrusted to take care of, we must.

Plastic Jungle
The ocean faces a myriad of threats. From the major and high profile ones like oil spills, to the silent but equally if not more destructive ones like ocean acidification. Overfishing is leading to regime shifts of once vibrant coral reefs and those fish that we do harvest, harbor the threat of contamination from toxins like mercury and ciguatera. We have altered the ocean’s ecosystems dramatically because of these threats. Though for the ones so far removed from the sea, it can be quite hard to fathom the practices that have such a destructive impact on the ocean. Full grocery stores and fish markets do not hint at declining fish stocks, and definitely not at of decreasing fish size. A farmer in the Midwest is decoupled from the effect that over fertilizing his or her fields has on oxygen levels in the Gulf of Mexico. Though only a few may actually witness, in person, the unhealthy state of the ocean, it’s likely that effects of a deteriorated ocean will have impacts that reach far beyond those that use its resources on a frequent basis.
One thing that seems to be oblivious to many is the way plastics are affecting the ocean. When I was younger, Captain Planet and the Planeteers told me to cut all the rings out of the plastic ring that held a six pack together. So I did that convinced that I was keeping hundreds of birds from starvation and countless sea turtles free from being ensnared. But here we are now 20 years later and the problem of plastics in the oceans far surpasses that of simply altering the configuration of plastic soda rings (though we all know if you should always cut the rings).
A 2009 research cruise showed that plastic garbage floating in the North Pacific has increased 100 times over the last 40 years (Goldstein 2012). And this is just one area of the ocean. In total there are five major gyres located in the ocean that could contain floating garbage and plastic. Maybe you’ve heard about the Great Pacific garbage patch? This one gyre contains plastic and floating garbage twice the size of Texas. That same cruise sampled fish from this area and discovered that 9 percent of all fish sampled contained some form of plastic or waste in their stomachs. More alarmingly though is the potential of patches such as the one in the North Pacific, to alter ecosystem dynamics. Floating refuse creates habitats from marine insects to lay eggs. Research from this cruise and others show that particular forms of sea skaters that use these plastic patches and can subsequently see an increase in their numbers.
In a paper from earlier this year, it was noted that estimates of the amount of plastic present in these gyres may be conservatively low because it is now being observed that wind tends to push plastic deeper. Many estimates of the scope of the problem use top-water, or skimming sampling. By sampling and various areas in the water column, a more accurate gauge of the concentration of plastic can be determined. New research shows that the numbers are likely to increase (Kukulka et al. 2012).
But with most things, for it to really matter, we have to add a human component. Essentially, the larger these plastic patches become, the more species it will affect. This means more fish containing plastic in their stomachs. This means more birds dying from plastic ingestion. And we know that when we affect one aspect of the food web, we will undoubtedly affect the other aspects as well. This has consequences for those of us that enjoy seafood. Couple this threat with those mentioned earlier, and the problem compounds even more, further straining an already compromised ecosystem. The increase in plastic will likely become ever more present on our beaches and in our bays. What is now distant and vague will soon be a constant problem for the tourist industry and the growing coastal populations. Just today, as I was surfing in Miami, I collected five large plastic bags. Yes, we can help by taking re-usable cloth bags when we grocery shop. But the issue extends beyond this. Plastic breaks up over and over again into tiny little pieces, but never really goes away. What we need to do is to really think about our relationship with plastic. It may be that the proliferation of the use of plastic after the Second World War has had unintended consequences that we are just now realizing. It’s what we are going to do to not contribute to the problem even further is the question and the challenge in front of us. Cities across the country are banning plastic bags. As good as a step this may be, thinking more broadly and incorporating ways to reduce plastic use is the only way we are going to begin to reduce the amount of plastic that eventually ends up in the oceans.

"Houdini" the Manatee Rescued!
Today was round two! Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, and Wastewater Treatment Plant employees returned to the retention pond in Oldsmar, FL to rescue "Houdini" the manatee! Glad to say that on our very first attempt, we were successful! "Houdini" was double the size of the first manatee rescued, measuring out at a length of 8 1/2 ft! "Houdini" was also discovered to be a she! After medical examination, she was successfully released back into the wild.

On a Wild Manatee Chase!!! Rescuing Manatees Trapped due to Tropical Storm Debby
I am hungry, muddy, sun burnt, bitten all over by fire ants, and my muscles are in pain, yet honestly there is no other place I would rather be. The sky is blue, the sun is brilliantly shining (a welcomed sight after a week of non-stop rain) and I am working with an amazing group of people about to successfully release our first rescued manatee! I conjure up all my strength and help lift the bright blue stretcher that is carrying the small, yet heavy, 4 ft long male West Indian manatee. In unison, about 16 individuals, including myself, move carefully but quickly towards the flowing brackish canal, where we are going to release the manatee. After a few moments of bumping into one another and stepping on each other’s shoes, we are finally at the shore of the canal. We slowly maneuver in, dip the stretcher underwater, and mesmerized, we all watch as our little rescued manatee swims away. The silence is all of sudden broken by loud cheering and clapping! Again, there is no other place I would rather be.
The time it took to release the first manatee was probably less than 2 minutes. Of course, the same could not be said for the hours it took to rescue that manatee, and the extra hours it took to attempt to rescue a second, trapped manatee. In total, over 6 and a ½ hours! The day started at 9am on June 28th, 2012, where Clearwater Marine Aquarium staff and interns, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and Wastewater Treatment Plant employees worked together to help rescue two manatees in distress. The manatees had been found trapped in a retention pond in Oldsmar, FL because of the water surges caused by tropical storm Debby.
It is no easy task to wrangle up two manatees! First, we had to locate them. The only way to find them was by catching a glimpse of the manatees when they would take a breath at the surface of the water. Patience is virtue I would have to remind myself, as manatees could hold their breath up to 15 minutes! Once we found them, we set out several nets, some up to 400 feet in length, in order to block out sections of the pond. Then, with some planning and amazing teamwork, we would finally place in our “catch” net, reel it in, and hope with all our might that we would have a manatee! Our first attempt was a success, as we were able to catch the smaller of the two manatees. The animal was examined by FWC to collect information on its fat layer thickness, length, girth, and gender. The manatee was also tagged with pit tags, to monitor it’s movements in the wild. All of this information helps us protect these endangered marine mammal species. Right before release, FWC permitted some of the curious children on scene to get up close and personal with the rescued manatee. Besides releasing the manatee, there was no better feeling in the world than seeing a kid’s eyes light up as he gets to see a gentle sea cow face to face.
After releasing the first manatee, it was back to work! We still needed to rescue the second manatee that was trapped in the retention pond. As we had done before, we devised a plan and we set out our nets. However, every single time we thought that we caught the animal, we would instead find the manatee right outside of our net! We eventually ended up nicknaming the manatee “Houdini”, as the animal continued to disappear from our grasps! After several attempts, we knew that we needed to get creative to catch “Houdini”. Our creative plan - a human net! Several volunteers swam from one end of the pond to the other end, in the hopes of herding the sea cow into the net. Everything was going according to plan. “Houdini” the manatee was approaching the net. We then anxiously waited for the animal’s next breath to see where it was located. After what seemed an eternity, we finally spotted “Houdini” in the area of the net! Immediately we began to reel the net in, all excited about our most recent catch! However, as the final part of the net was pulled in, we saw that “Houdini” had once again, disappeared.
FWC will be returning later on next week to hopefully finally catch “Houdini” the manatee, and return the animal back into the wild. Although we were unable to catch both manatees, it was such an amazing experience to work alongside such wonderful, dedicated, hardworking, and passionate individuals. Not only were we able to collect important information on manatees, release one back into the wild, but we were also able to inspire children to protect and conserve one of Florida’s most beloved marine mammals, the manatee.
