SpongeBob SquarePants (1999)
s1e4.1 Naughty Nautical Neighbors
part 2
Fright. one of the best joke paintings. what was the intention behind this one aside from the bit?? fantastic
the bait and switch slapstick; gold ✨ then we have Self in Gray.
seen here in two identical copies. not to be mistakenly assumed to have simply been moved, as here they are later in the exact same shot
why would he make two of these? Gray on gray?? hilarious. especially with the number of different variations in the rest of the episode.
he’s so ridiculous. i love it.
s1e4.1 Naughty Nautical Neighbors
part 1
in this episode we get a lot of new artworks but the soufflé deserves an honorable mention
excellent composition, for no one but himself. fantastic. no one does self-care like Squiddy. plus:
look how goofy it looks zoomed out. 10/10
then we see
a close up self portrait in two different places.
and these two paintings are introduced for the first time. the one on the left appears to be three squidwards? we’ll call it father, son, and spirit. and on the right: small-nosed self portrait in red
there’s also a close up of slightly different composition, another front facing portrait and a Light Study.
we see Big Head portrait return from the Bubble Stand episode twice: once by itself and once with the original stack.
i love all of the recurring paintings. i wonder if they kept a list of them somewhere.
s1e3.1 Jellyfishing
there’s only a single painting in this one, unless you count this half an image at the start of the episode
but that looks like the same painting that appears later
self portrait with bubbles
i love all the different variations between shots
the fact that the bubbles aren’t always visible 🫧 the different brushstrokes 🖌️ beautiful

s1e2.3 Bubble Stand
so this is our first time inside of Squidward’s house and here we see the introduction of several iconic paintings such as
this pyramid of self portraits
these three self portraits in ascent
this stack of paintings with some minor differences between shots
and this standing portrait that will often be swapped out, even within the same eposode
i just love the consistency and the effort put into these recurring paintings. its very interesting to see how they evolve through the seasons.
i’ve decided to start cataloguing all of Squidward’s artworks across the first three seasons of Spongebob.
you’re welcome.
