Fright. one of the best joke paintings. what was the intention behind this one aside from the bit?? fantastic

the bait and switch slapstick; gold ✨ then we have Self in Gray.

seen here in two identical copies. not to be mistakenly assumed to have simply been moved, as here they are later in the exact same shot

why would he make two of these? Gray on gray?? hilarious. especially with the number of different variations in the rest of the episode.

The first few seasons of SpongeBob are

1. Really well written

Like in the best episodes the jokes are really sharp writing is just TIGHT and SMART and COMEDICALLY CRISP

Why is Dying For Pie kind of a comedic masterpiece

It’s so well paced

2. Have a kind of countercultural sensibility

I keep coming with to Pee Wee Herman. I wept watching the Paul Reuben documentary marveling at the depth of his counterculturality

Butthole Surfers if it was a tv show for kids

It’s garage it’s scrappy it’s so gritty compared to its modern version

To be clear I never liked modern SpongeBob most

If we recognize pee wee Herman as a piece of counterculture surely we can do the same with SpongeBob it comes from the same world

Captain Tentacles and Squid in Abstract

first appearance for both of them!

both have excellent composition. the off center angle of the first really makes it. and i love the stained glass style of the second. and the color palettes! perfect 👌

in spongebob episode 2.01 spongebob forgets how to tie his shoes, and accidentally flings approx. 20 (shown explicitly, but most likely more more due to his bodliy inflation) krabby patties into squidward’s mouth. but in episode 3.05, squidward declares that he's "never had a krabby patty and never will". so squidward either didn't consider that really "trying" a krabby patty, since it wasn't by choice, though he clearly chewed, swallowed, and most likely tasted the patties, OR the spongebob universe is non-linear.

HOWEVER in episode 2.28, the secret box, patrick's true secret is the embarrassing snapshot of spongebob from the christmas party, referencing episode 2.15, suggesting that it IS linear. so what is the truth?

in this episode we get a lot of new artworks but the soufflé deserves an honorable mention

excellent composition, for no one but himself. fantastic. no one does self-care like Squiddy. plus:

look how goofy it looks zoomed out. 10/10

then we see

a close up self portrait in two different places.

and these two paintings are introduced for the first time. the one on the left appears to be three squidwards? we’ll call it father, son, and spirit. and on the right: small-nosed self portrait in red

there’s also a close up of slightly different composition, another front facing portrait and a Light Study.

we see Big Head portrait return from the Bubble Stand episode twice: once by itself and once with the original stack.

i love all of the recurring paintings. i wonder if they kept a list of them somewhere.

during Squid's birthday party, we see several more copies of Neutral Self Portrait, this time in various shades of teal.

Afterwards we see the Large Standing Portrait return, followed by a few more Smiling Portraits. i can't tell if these are supposed to be the same pyramid of paintings from the Bubble Stand episode. the expressions are different, and the bottom center is missing.
