Shout out to the black girl in the early stages of her natural hair journey..

Spending all your money on different products. 

Spending hours on the internet reading and learning about natural hair. 

Researching different supplements. 

Trying to master different oils. 

Admiring beautiful heads of natural hair while you’re in class. 

Creating folders on your computer with titles like “Natural Hair Inspo” and “Hair Goals” filled with all your natural hair inspiration pictures. 

Measuring your hair like every 3 days to see how much it grew. 

Wondering maybe if it just isn’t in your genetics (it is, you can do this! Don’t doubt yourself). 

Randomly getting pissed off sometimes because you want to protective style your hair, but you still want your hair style to be considered “cute” so you’re struggling to find that golden protective hairstyle that’s going to allow your hair to retain length, but still make you feel confident when you’re out and about. 

Sitting in your room multiplying the length of 6 inches by however many years it’s going to take for you to reach your goal..

Wondering why your curls don’t clump like the girls on YouTube. (Don’t worry sweetheart, they clump like yours. And that’s beautiful too.)

Frustrated because some girl went natural AFTER you and now her hair is longer than yours. (Chill. She’s not better than you, don’t even let that thought enter your mind. She just found what methods work for her, all you need to do is find what works for you.)

Got ridiculed when you wore weave, now you get ridiculed for your natural texture. You’ll learn not to care either way, it all comes with time.

I’ve been there.. Trust me when I say consistency is key. Stay consistent and stay patient. You’ve got this.

90s Party

It’s 2005 and I am 7, and my mom does my hair up in little braids with bright beads and barrettes that match my clothes. My teachers complain that they’re distracting. My mother tries to reason with them that braids are just about the only to manage my hair. They don’t care. The seed is sown.

It’s 2006 and I start getting my hair pressed. My Sundays are spent with aloe vera leaves pressed to the burns on my neck. I start to hate rain and develop a fear of heat tools that lasts to this day.

It’s 2008 and all the girls at school brush each other’s hair. Becky asks if she can brush mine. I want to fit in so I tell her yes. I want to disappear when she runs away yelling to the class that I have grease in my hair.

It’s 2008 when I ask my mom why my hair isn’t like the other girls’. She tells me it’s just how I am, and that my black hair is nothing to be ashamed of. I want to tell her she’s wrong.

It’s 2009 and I sit on the floor in my living room crying as the chemicals burn my scalp but I don’t move until twenty minutes have passed. After its been flat ironed it’s silky and straight - but it’s not straight or silky enough, not white girl straight. I touch the chemical burns on my scalp and wish I had left the perm on longer.

It’s 2010 and I’m three weeks late on my perm. That awful, bushy new growth is starting to grow under my perfect straight hair. I hate it. I think it’s ugly and dirty and I wish it’d just go away. I remind my mom to grab the extra strength relaxer.

It’s 2011 and I’m going through my scene phase. I want nothing more than to tease my hair and put it into backcombed pigtails and clip dream catchers into it. But I can’t. It bushes out at the slightest hint of moisture and tangled in the bat of an eye. I hate my hair in both its natural and treated forms.

It’s 2013 and my hair can’t take anymore. It’s damaged beyond repair and I’m forced to cut all thirteen inches off. I’m left with the natural hair I’ve hated my whole life. I cry for weeks.

It’s 2013 and my first healthy curl has appeared. I think it looks pretty. For Christmas I wish for more.

It’s 2015 and I have a fro as big and round as the sun. My curls frame my face like laurels. I put on my hoop earrings and love how I look.

It’s 2015 and I feel the need to reinvent myself. I cut it all off again, from twelve inches to three. I cry for days.

It’s 2016 and my curls are more defined than ever. My natural hair is my glory. I style them into a flat top or a coiff or whatever I feel like. I consider growing them out again.

Your hair journey will not always be pretty. It will not always be healthy. You will not remember all of it fondly. But no matter how rough or how long, it will always be worth it.

America was built by the labor of slaves, blacks. And is still being supported by the hard work of immigrants and other nationalities. The United States of America isn’t at the least united at all, it’s even more divided than ever. It is us the blacks, Africans/ African Americans, Latinos and other beautiful nationalities that make up this country. We are the back bone. The hard working. We do the jobs that others don’t dare to do. Yet we are the minorities. We get looked down upon. We do all the work and never get the credit we solely deserve. We work our asses off and make it to the top of our professions and still if that company has an ideal image in mind they will pick that white man over the black man or Latino who has experience, several degrees.. the Bachelors, MBA or Phd because he still isn’t what that company wants to project unto white America. I was born NOT in this country I came here at age 4. I’ve always been a hard worker and I still am, do you know how frustrating it is when some challenges your intelligence because they hear a little of your accent after every other two words. Of thinks less of you because your skin is darker. Do you really understand how it feels when people think just because you came from a country that America portrays as a 3rd world country, that you was one of the lucky ones that survived and came to a country to better yourself? No of course some of you don’t because you were born here and everything is handed to you, yet some of you still amount to nothing with all the privileges in front of you, you still end up no where. Yet hate on the little black boy or Latino girl who grew up and made something of themselves.

This is no joke. This is not a dry run. These aren’t tweets or television bloopers.

Donald Trump, as President of the United States, is getting people needlessly killed. In a report released at 4:56 a.m. Thursday from Reuters, two lines are deeply troubling and cannot be ignored about Trump’s first military raid — which happened this past weekend in Yemen. They state:

“U.S. military officials told Reuters that Trump approved his first covert counterterrorism operation without sufficient intelligence, ground support or adequate backup preparations.

“As a result, three officials said, the attacking SEAL team found itself dropping onto a reinforced Al Qaeda base defended by landmines, snipers, and a larger than expected contingent of heavily armed Islamist extremists.”

Now we have learned that at least 15 women and children were killed in the raid that also took the life of U.S. Navy SEAL William “Ryan” Owens.

This is not okay, but it is completely and totally predictable. Of course Donald Trump rushed into this operation “without sufficient intelligence, ground support or adequate backup operations.” He has no idea what he’s doing. He has no government or military experience. He’s never served in government a day in his life. He has openly admitted to not reading his daily briefings. Everything we know about Donald Trump has told us that he would lead us into something “without sufficient intelligence,” except now he’s not blathering on about the investigators he sent to Hawaii to find Obama’s birth certificate. Now he is leading military operations.

In addition to the civilian casualties and the loss of a Navy SEAL, the commandos were also forced to destroy a $70 million helicopter that they had to abandon as well.

Early reports on the troubling raid have also repeatedly stated that the Obama administration knew full well about the target, but did not execute the raid for “operational reasons.” What that generally means is that the Obama administration surveyed this situation and did not feel that they had the intelligence needed to run the operation. Trump, it appears, threw a middle finger in the air, and ran with the operation in spite of this. One of the three military officials who spoke to Reuters confirmed this very thing. They said, “The decision was made … to leave it to the incoming administration, partly in the hope that more and better intelligence could be collected.”

A military official said that there was “minimal, at best” on-the-ground surveillance prior to the raid.

That explains why three different military officials told Reuters that the SEAL team quickly found itself in a nearly indefensible position without the “ground support or adequate backup preparations.”

Now here’s what I know. Had this been Hillary Clinton, who military officials said sent a SEAL team into an operation “without sufficient intelligence,” conservatives would want her head on a stick. They would launch an investigation. The new meme of the moment would switch from Benghazi to Yemen and all Fox News would talk about would be how Hillary Clinton got a precious Navy SEAL killed.

Well, that’s what Donald Trump just did. This isn’t my liberal opinion — this is what military officials told Reuters. I’m not interested in gotcha politics. We’re talking about lives here.

An 8-year-old girl, who happened to be an American citizen, was shot in the neck and killed in this raid. Did they know she was there? We don’t know. What we do know is that this raid was a damn mess and that it appears to typify the very lessons we’ve learned about this man.

Is our nation safer when our President announces a ban on people from predominantly Muslim countries? Is our nation safer when our President insults the Prime Minister of Australia and hangs up on him? Is our nation safer when civilians in Yemen are killed and a Navy SEAL loses his life in a hastily planned operation?

I think you know the answers. This joke has already gone too far. Now, it’s costing lives.
