The visual changes on the 2024 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport are concentrated on the front end. They both feature a pair of larger headlights connected by an LED bar above the illuminated VW emblem (standard on all models except the base trims), with the outer shape of the clusters sending some Ford Expedition vibes. These new lighting units, along with the enlarged grille and interconnected bumper intakes, distinguish the US-spec SUVs from the related Chinese VW Terramont and Terramont X.

The Nissan Terra is a midsize SUV that’s based on the Navara D23 pick-up truck. In addition to the platform, it also shares the interior and engine options of the Navara. Out of all the various features that it has, the Terra’s multi-link rear suspension really differentiates it from the rest in its segment. It also mainly explains why the Terra is one of the more comfortable ladder-frame vehicles sold in the Philippines. Power-wise, the Nissan Terra has a 2.5-liter diesel engine with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic transmission. Toyota’s engineers have fitted the GR HiLux with a new turbocharger and bespoke new fuel-injection mapping to up the 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine’s outputs from the usual 150kW/500Nm to 165kW at 3000rpm and 550Nm at 2800rpm, marking a 10 per cent bump in both power and torque.

These are the same outputs as seen in South Africa’s HiLux GR Sport and make Toyota Australia’s new flagship ute the most powerful diesel HiLux variant to date (bettered only by the 2008-09 TRD HiLux with its supercharged 225kW/453Nm 4.0-litre petrol V6).

Toyota combines the power of a Dynamic Force 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor and hybrid battery. This system generates 219 horsepower overall. The front motor generates 118 horsepower while the rear motor generates 54 horsepower. A 252V battery pack stores energy to assist every drive.

Fuel economy is a remarkable 37 mpg on the highway and an even better 40 mpg in the city, according to EPA ratings. According to the Department of Energy fuel calculator, the Venza hybrid saves drivers $4,000 or more over five years.

For aerodynamics, the Venza Nightshade has special underbody panels, an integrated rear spoiler, and a special side garnish. It also has active grille shutters to control air flow as needed either for cooling or for better aerodynamics.

The former pairs Suzuki’s K15C engine with a 12-volt 6-Ah lithium-ion battery for a total of 102 horsepower and 135 Nm of torque (Suzuki Smart Hybrid). It’s the very same engine used in the
