POST REFLECTION
Intensives are up, Winter Break is on!!! Urban Discovery was good while it lasted. It is surprising how much I can say I learned within just two weeks. It varied from the history of New York City to busking. It was a great time, and I did not mind the exponential amount of reflections we had to write.
The Transit Museum was a good time. I really enjoyed how Polly, our tour guide, based certain aspects of the transit history with the women involved. Walking across the Manhattan Bridge seemed so pointless, but it made me appreciate the subway. The day would have been amazing-er if it was not raining.
The Cloisters was AMAZING!! The setting was s realistic, It felt like I was at a bootlegged version of the Hogwarts castle. The Cloisters was so far, but I now know not to ignore because of distance. It was a good time and I am planning on going again!!! Its amazing how much NYC cares for history enough to reconstruct a medieval castle, and present it to the people and create an authentic learning experience. @ja2015udr
For our plan of urban discovery, we went to the Natural History museum, and the Belvedere Castle in Central park. The Natural History Museum is such a familiar place for me. I seriously been there like 20 times!!!! Which means I was not as excited. I was looking forward to the exhibit of African animals brought back to life by the art of TAXIDERMY, but we never went :(. It was all okay because we went to the exhibit of early humans, and I already knew the history they were presenting and felt goood!!! At the Belvedere Castle, we all had a good time. I mean it is not everyday we climb a castle. I was also able to connect the time we spent in Central park with my major. All in all, the trip was familiar, but I still learned something new.
Reflection for 12/11/15 MCNY
The Museum of the City of New York was time well spent. It was actually my first time in Harlem!!! All I knew about Harlem was jazz music and graffiti, but that is not all. It seems like there is a lot of innovation Harlem, which means it is getting better. When at MCNY, Fielding, our tour guide led us to a watch a short film. I thought it was insane how a 20 minute video answered all questions That I had. Now I can say I know what New York was Originally called (New Amsterdam)!!! I got to see art work by Christopher Ellis, a terrific graffiti artist, who was born and bred in Brooklyn. I learned about Jacob A. Riis and his technique to promoting charity for lower class tenants. We had the opportunity to enter the Cathedral of Saint John the Devine. Which was phenomenal. I understood how big of a deal the NYC Marathon is. Aside from being hungry and low on sleep, my day was great!!! @se2015udr @ja2015udr
Pre- reflection 12.10.15
There is no denying that NYC is the best city in the world. I mean I can go to Chine, Italy, or Paris, within a few miles from home. NYC is an amazing city, but not all the time. There can be setbacks such as traffic, pollution, expenses, and the list continues, but they do not matter because of the excitement this city provides. I am hope uncover as much new information an I can during my Urban Discovery intensive. Maybe even find out when I can officially consider myself an actual new Yorker??????
