Do you want a security job? Have you ever considered a job in the private security industry? Well? Get on it!
Working the Doors....My Way.
"What do i have to do to become a bouncer?" "Do you have to be big to be a bouncer?" "Do i have to learn martial arts to be a bouncer?"
These are just a few of the questions i get asked quite regularly while i’m working the doors, usually by some fresh faced, naive, young pup who is aspiring to greatness. More often than not i just give the standard response of “No, you just need to do the course and then apply for your licence”, but occasionally i’ll go into a bit more detail if they seem capable of processing so much information. Mostly i just want to placate their curiosity and get on with my job. Then an acquaintance of mine, who recently started doing door work, approached me with a similar line of questioning and it got me thinking…..What does it actually take to be a door supervisor?? I mean, beyond simply getting the qualification and buying a licence.
I wish there was an easy answer to that question, but there isn’t one. It’s a simple process (too simple in my humble opinion) to get a licence and start working as a door supervisor these days, but to actually hack it on the doors takes a certain kind of person, and most of what you need to learn to be a good door supervisor can’t be taught in a classroom, you learn it on the job and by watching and listening to the guys around you!
I’d like to share some of my experience and opinions on what it takes to be a good door supervisor. Now bear in mind that these are my personal thoughts and opinions, and some people may not agree with some, or all of them, but this is how i do things and it has worked well for me for the last 8 years. Take from this what you want, if it helps you then that’s great, if not then you’ve still not lost anything by reading it.
